"After doing this for 31 years, the expectations — I told our team yesterday — are that we win all the games. We won two last year, we understand we’ve got a lot of things to do. … To me, if you tell your team you’re not going to win all the games, you’re not going to. So our goal would be to win all the games. Are we good enough? Right now, we’re not. we’ve got a lot of work to do, a lotto things to fix, but still i’ve never been in a game where I didn’t think we had a chance."

"I think it’s two things. No. 1, we have a great product. This is tremendous academic institution, this is a great place for people to go to school and your degree means something when you get out of here. And, number two — we’re proven winners. Our staff has won before, we’ve got a staff that can recruit this state, and I think all that coming together has really helped us in recruiting."

"Our coaches have kind of compared Sam to a guy like Brett Favre. He’s a gunslinger, he competes, he’s tough, he’s smart, he’s a natural leader. He came in as a high school senior this spring and did a tremendous job. We were very excited bout the progress he made early in an offense that can be a little complicated for a young guy because you’ve got to make a lot of decisions."

"The good thing for us is we’ve got three quarterbacks that are all good enough, two of them are redshirt freshmen in Cade Fortin and Jace Ruder, they got hurt last year but didn’t get to play in more than four games, so they redshirted. The negative is they’re all the same age — either freshmen or redshirt freshmen. We know modern-day with the transfer portal, not everybody’s going to stay, so we’re going to wait until the fall and let the guys compete in preseason. The guy that wins the job is the guy that gets us in the end zone the most."

"When a guy can come in early like Sam did, and go through the offseason program, have a semester under his belt, go through a spring practice, have all the work you can help him with over the summer … it’s easier for a young freshman quarterback to be ready than it used to be. I think Sam will be right in the middle of this competition when we start in the fall and we’re not planning on redshirting anybody; we need to win. If the guys are good enough to play, they’re going to play regardless of age."

"My wife Sally and I say we’re older but Chapel Hill really hasn’t changed. It’s the same, it’s like it was in a time warp. Hasn’t changed much at all. Now, I think my mind is a lot better, my mind’s a lot worse. … The facilities have changed so much, the stadium wasn’t near what it is like now. It’s beautiful. … It’s so much a better job right now. The ACC’s better, so many better teams in it. Clemson’s the best team in the country by far, anybody that can beat Clemson in this league has a chance to make the playoff."

"No, not at all. The Texas people were always great to me and too Sally, and we loved it. When (new athletics director) Chris Del Conte came in, he reached out to us and kept us involved. Tom Herman was a graduate assistant for us. I was sitting in Bristol the day Tom was hired (December, 2016) and he called and said, ‘We want you here for the press conference.’ I said, ‘Tom, I can’t get there.’ He sent a plane and got me and brought us in. There were a couple guys at the end who didn’t want us around Texas and that made it uncomfortable."

"We kept a place in Austin, we’ve got two sons there and two grandkids there, and Sally will go back there once a month and see all of her friends. You win a national championship there, you spend 16 years there, it’s part of the Hall of Fame, so I can still be a big Texas fan and when I go back to Austin I can still wear my burnt orange and be OK."

"Sally said it best — we never left Chapel Hill, we just moved to Austin. And that’s two of the better places to live in the country. Now, we didn’t leave Austin, we just moved to Chapel Hill. So we just moved back and forth. ... It’s been fun, not many people leave here. They love this place."

"I never like to play against friends, coach against friends, because it’s a little more awkward having to talk to them heading into the game. Week 1, it’s more about the University of North Carolina and South Carolina in Charlotte, and opening the season, and I think that’s what’s gonna be cool about it. Secondly, with Miami, we’ll have a sellout here, national TV game, 8 p.m., first home game, first game back, with Coach Diaz, and that’ll be fun, too."
