Following the events of the last film, Machete and Agent Rivera have been a team fighting crime. Machete is back for another daft romp. This time, any semblance of good sense is out the window in favour of a plot that smashes together as many silly elements as it can muster; the whole thing held together by a series of increasingly ridiculous scenes. It's all entertaining enough in a childish sort of way, though it does get a bit much after an hour or so. I think Machete Kills really lacks the charm that was nailed in the first fake trailer, and then stretched out a bit in the feature length movie. First off, the opening trailer for Machete Kills Again... in Space is perfect. Just the kind of self-aware fun more films need.
Unfortunately, it's the highlight of the film.
Until the closing scene, it does struggle with some pacing. There are moments that are LOL funny, and others that fail at being so. Look, I'm not offended or bothered by a grad exploding or a body being cut in half, but it also doesn't really qualify as humor to me. Mr. Rodriguez disagrees; take that for what it's worth.

Self-deprecatingly dumb B-movie with personality. Machete Kills gets everything outrageously right that the instantly rusty 2010 original got wrong (Christ, that first one was boring). Danny Trejo is the anti-hero with a leathery face who gets throttled into a preposterous plot in Mexico that by end will launch him into space. Mel Gibson is one of several outlandish bad guys that you love to hate. Robert Rodriguez got it right this time to go larger-than-cheese for his post-modern grindhouse bloodbath.
