This historical drama was made in the wake of the successful BBC TV series and used the same star, Keith Michell.
Young Henry’s jousting tournament was filmed at the unmistakably Jacobean Hatfield House, Hatfield in Hertfordshire.
Hatfield was seen as the home of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and provided the interiors for both ‘Wayne Manor’ in Tim Burton’s Batman and the Greystoke estate in Greystoke: the Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. Tim Burton returned for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Guy Ritchie’s used the house in Sherlock Holmes.
Hatfield is also featured in such period pieces as Shekhar Kapur's epic Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Oscar-winner Shakespeare in Love and Sally Potter’s film of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando.
Catherine Howard (Lynne Frederick) is arrested, supposedly at ‘Hampton Court’, but the scene is filmed at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, and the unfortunate queen is executed in the School Quad (seen in The Madness of King George, Shakespeare In Love, Chariots of Fire and Young Sherlock Holmes.).
There was more filming at Woburn Abbey, home of the Duke of Bedford, eight and a half miles northwest of Dunstable on the A4012 (rail: Leighton Buzzard or Bletchley) and Allington Castle, a private residence not open to visitors, couple of miles north of Maidstone in Kent.
