Phil Leeds (April 6, 1916August 16, 1998) was the actor who played Uncle Mel on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Biography[]

Career[]

Phil was born on, in New York City, the son of a post office clerk.[1] He started his career as a standup comedian and then went on to appear in several films, including the 1968 horror film Rosemary's Baby, and 1969's Don't Drink The Water, and also made many appearances on numerous TV shows, such as the CBS-TV series Kojak, ABC-TV's Three's Company, NBC-TV's Night Court, and Wings, and Fox-TV's Ally McBeal, and The Larry Sanders Show, as well as the 1966-68 NBC sitcom The Monkees, ABC's The Patty Duke Show, ABC-TV's The Odd Couple, and Happy Days, NBC's Friends,The Golden Girls, Mad About You, and Wings and The Dick Van Dyke Show. At age 80, he appeared on an episode of ABC's Roseanne series, in which Roseanne finds herself drawn into a creepy '90s version of Rosemary's Baby (Leeds played the role of "Dr. Shand" in the original 1968 film). Leeds also memorably appeared as a fellow ghost in the 1990 film Ghost.

Phil was a stand-up comedian for many years and made many TV and film appearances throughout his career.
