Harbour Grand Hong Kong or Kowloon?

Harbour Grand Hong Kong or Kowloon?

We will be in Hong Kong for just 3 days from 30th June till 3rd July. Have narrowed it down to Harbour Grand Hong Kong or Harbour Grand Kowloon. Things to consider are:

We arrive late afternoon from UK and will be tired so distance from Airport by taxi

A nice swimming pool where we can lounge after or between sightseeing

Distance by Taxi to Disneyland (we are going on Sunday 2nd July....are we mad???)

Food Options in hotel

Rooms best suited to 2 adults and 1 Child

Best Views.

I think Harbour Grand Hong King looks slightly nicer and maybe better tourist location but Kowloon looks like better pool and closer to airport/Disney. Could anyone who is familiar with these hotels offer any thoughts on which to pick. Thanks so much.

I thought the Kowloon is the nicer of the two - but never stayed in either for obvious reasons. For the inside of the hotel and quality of their amenities etc read the reviews.

Location wise, both are fine. The Hong Kong one is near a more convenient MTR station but the Kowloon one has the great Hung Hom waterfront promenade. Great for evening walks, done that routinely when I lived in that vicinity. Hung Hom may also still be a bit less crowded than Fortress Hill district.

Harbour Grand HK is the newer one (though it's not exactly new either). I felt it's a bit nicer. However, I would rate it as less convenient overall. The closest MTR station is Fortress Hill which is built way deep into the underground. From HGHK to the Fortress Hill platform might take 15 minutes.

For the Kowloon location, from Whampoa MTR, you can get to Mong Kok very quickly. I believe they run a shuttle to Tsim Sha Tsui as well.

Food: Food in both hotels are mediocre, but there are multiple options within walking distance.

Nearest major tourist area (by taxi): Kowloon to TST (5 mins), Hong Kong to causeway bay (5 mins)

Harbour view: Harbour Grand kowloon has nice habour view but the top floor of Grand Harbour HK offers a even better one.

Hotel conditions: Harbour Grand Kowloon is nicer and newly renovated and i believe it has better pool and, closer to airport and Disney if you take taxi (but I wouldn't recommend taking taxi simply because taxi drivers in hk are notoriously untrustworthy and Disney line may be something you want to check out if you're a Disneyland fan)

I'd recommend HG kowloon

"taxi drivers in hk are notoriously untrustworthy"

As someone who's lived in HK for the past 25 years and takes taxis very regularly I think this is unfair. There are a very small number of dodgy taxi drivers who hang around places where tourists go and try to scam them, but they are a tiny fraction of the total.

The standard rules for taxis anywhere will keep you away from them: always pick your taxi - never let a taxi driver pick you; hailing a moving taxi is better than one that is "loitering" unless it is sitting on an official taxi rank; make sure the meter is switched off before you enter and switched on after you enter; in case of any issues make it clear to the driver that you will happily call the police (112 and 999 both work on your mobile, but the driver will recognise it immediately if you show him 999 as the dialled number waiting for you to press call.)

I think the vast majority of taxi drivers are honest but scams do occasionally happen outside LKF;

Another popular location for taxi scammers is Harbour City/Canton Road area.

Whether at LKF or Canton Road, just avoid any taxis that have their flags covered. Those could be the scammers waiting for you to ask for a rate. At LKF late night, the best strategy is to walk back down to Queen's Road Central and flag a moving cab or pick one up at Pedder St right outside Landmark/Louis Vuitton. Near Harbour City, Star Ferry/Star House has a proper taxi stand.

Most drivers are honest.

To #4

As someone who lives in Hong Kong for more than 30+ years, taxi is my and my partner's main form of transportation other than driving (at least 2 rides/d). I also have friends who own taxi license or work as taxi driver.

I have to admit I'm extremely surprised if a local like you is not aware of the terrible reputation of taxi drivers among locals and the persisting and notorious problems of taxi drivers not using the most direct practicable route, having bad attitude and terrible road safety awareness.

When I say they are notoriously untrustworthy, I am not referring the less common cases where taxi drivers being rogue or trying to overcharge a tourist by proposing an unreasonable fee, I am referring to their dishonest practices as mentioned above. If you are an asia who speaks fluent Cantonese and knows the roads well, you should not be surprised by what I've said.

However, this is just my opinion so if you're happy with the taxi drivers in Hong kong, then please ignore my comments.

As a local, I have rarely seen a taxi driver take the scenic route. Most complaints I hear from my friends are about cab cleanliness and driving attitude.

I have heard from my American colleague that his driver once tried to take the scenic route on a short ride. However, my colleague has been coming to HK for 30 years with probably 100 trips total so he straightened out the situation right away.

#8 it's quite interesting that you claim taxis are your main form of transport, while at the same time you have nothing good to say about them...

I for one also never had any serious problem with taxis in HK.
