Louis Theroux has made a name for himself by showcasing a whole world of oddities and more to the general public – from America’s Most Hated Family to giving us the first glimpse of the Tiger King himself, Joe Exotic.

And his new series, Louis Theroux’s Forbidden America, starts on BBC Two tonight.

The first episode will see Theroux meeting the young, extremist figures of the latest incarnation of the American far right: a political movement born online but making their presence felt in the real world, including some of those who came to the broader public’s attention through the notorious Capitol Hill riots.

But what about the man himself – what do we know about Louis Theroux’s personal life?

Is the documentarian married and does he have any children?

Who is Louis Theroux’s wife, Nancy Strang?

Louis Theroux is married to television producer Nancy Strang.

Strang has a successful 20 year-long career in television, having worked on several award-winning productions, including Timewatch and Imagine.

Back in 2019, she co-founded the production company Mindhouse Productions alongside husband Theroux, where she also works as the director of development.

Recently he opened up to Who Magazine, about their dynamic, admitting he doesn’t touch subjects that would make ‘my wife too uncomfortable.’

He then went on to tell the publication that he’s in no rush to retire soon.

‘Nancy thinks that (I will retire soon), and I don’t know that I have the heart to tell her that I don’t see it on the horizon,’ he said.

When did they get married?

They got married in 2012, after nearly 10 years of dating.

Theroux met Strang back in 2002 whilst they were both working at the BBC, and eventually tied the knot a decade later in 2012.

Speaking to Clara Amfo on her This City podcast, Theroux says how he began spotting Strang ‘around London’ and being stunned by her beauty.

‘She was sort of fashionable, but sort of not aggressively stylish. People didn’t really say “hipster” in those days, but she had a touch of hipster,’ he told Amfo.

The pair first spoke at an office Christmas party, and ‘went from there,’ he said.

Do they have children?

Theroux and Strang have three children together – sons Albert, Frederick, and Walter.

In his autobiography, Gotta Get Theroux This, Theroux revealed that the pair sadly suffered two miscarriages before the arrival of their third child, Walter.

Theroux wrote: ‘Getting to term [in her pregnancy] had been a trial, two had ended in miscarriage. There were tears on a weekend in Yosemite…

‘We’d been through nothing like that before. A language of grief and the social forms I was versed in did not seem adequate to the occasion.’

‘But sadness was complete and if I’m honest, I didn’t understand what she was going through. It still seemed abstract to me whereas for Nancy the babies had been real’.

Before his marriage to Strang, Theroux was married to writer Susanna Kleeman for three years from 1998 to 2001.
