Loss Of Faith In Elie Wiesel's Night

Faith plays a big part in the book “Night”, by Elie Wiesel. Elie seemed to have more faith in humanity and God than those who were older than him. Yet when when he and his family enter the concentration camps that faith disappeared. The faith he had in God, Humanity and including himself were gone.

Another time Elie questions God and his faith is around Rosh Hashana, the new year. All the Jews gathered together to say prayers to God. He questions God for allowing all these terrible things to happen to them when they live their lives for Him.

Elie loses complete faith in god in many points where god let him down. He struggles physically and mentally for life and no longer believes there is a god. Elie worked hard to save himself and asks god many times to help him and take him out of the misery he was facing. "Why should I sanctify his name? The Almighty, the eternal, and terrible Master of the Universe, chose to be silent..."(page 33). Elie was confused, because he doesn’t know why the Germans would kill his race amongst many others, and he does not know why god could let such thing happen to innocent people. At this point I was convince Eliezer wasn’t Elie anymore. That his nickname ringed in his ears with emptiness and not a trace of sweet or aching reminiscing. He already lost his foundation at first - everything he grew up to know and everyone he grew to love. Elie's struggle with his faith to God is a major internal conflict he has with him self in the book Night. In the beginning of the book, his faith in God is completly untoched. When questiond about his faith and why he would pray to God, he ask, “Why did I pray? Why did I live? Why did I breathe?”( Winsel Pg 2) His belief in a powerful and able God is untouched, and he cannot think of living without his faith in his religions practices, as it has been one of the main guides in his life. But this faith he has is shaken by his experience during the Holocaust and the events that took place, what he lives and what he sees.

We encounter Elie’s lost of faith throughout the book. Once he was separate he was brought to an area where bodies were being thrown into a fire. He started losing his faith in humanity once he saw the cruel things that were happening. When people lose there faith, they lose their faith in God and themselves. They start looking on the negative side of life and just lose their focus for what they wanted. Elie would want to study the Cabala but his father didn’t approve of it. He would always look out for not just his family but the people around him. Elie would always pray but wouldn't know why. When going through a hard time you usually hear people say ¨it can either make you or break you” but what about all the people who it doesn't do either? What if they are left high and dry? ¨I have not lost faith in God. I have moments of anger and protest. Sometimes I've been closer to him for that reason.¨ (Wiesel 73). In this quote I consider that Elie is in the middle, he hasn't strayed his faith but he is furious with God and might be slowly losing it. Elie heard people ask where God was all of the time, and he found himself pleading ¨Where is he? He is here--He is hanging here on this gallows...¨ (Chollabud). What is faith? Scripture tells us in Hebrews 11:1 that “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” (NIV) Faith means trusting that various situations will provide results best suited to help us in some way during our life. I’m sure others may have a different opinion; however, throughout my life, that has been the most accurate description.
