Marvel Studios' Loki - Season One
Overall Ratings
4 1/2 stars
9.1 out of ten
Episode Ratings Episode One "Glorious Purpose" - 8.5/10 Episode Two "The Variant" - 8.8/10 Episode Three "Lamentis" - 7.5/10 Episode Four "The Nexus Event" - 9/10 Episode Five "Journey Into Mystery" - 9.4/10 Episode Six "For All Time. Always." - 9.1/10
Acting - 0.9/1 Amazing cast with the top performances being Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku and with the standout performance (being a spoiler I sadly can't mention) from episode six.
Cinematography & CGI - 0.95/1 Cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw turns this series from something that could look drab and uninteresting to something that looks incredibly special and amazing, especially succeeding with the beautiful dynamic lighting and colour grading. The GCI was great, with very minor dips in episode three. However, it was still the Marvel show with the best CGI and at no point did I notice it looking bad at all. Overall, one of Marvel's best looking projects to date.
Dialogue - 0.85/1 The dialogue ranges from feeling slightly forced and awkward in episode three to brilliant in episodes one and six. Luckily most of the clunky dialogue is saved by the performances from the amazing cast.
Pacing - 0.8/1 After great pacing from episodes one and two, it grinds to a halt in episode three. Despite however necessary the character development may be it still doesn't help how slow and detached the episode feels when compared to the rest. Thankfully it speeds up again with episode five having the best pacing.
Plot - 0.9/1 Great plot with some really fun and unique ideas and scenes. I personally loved the episode four plot twist, the whole of episode five and how much world building episode six does. I do feel, however, the cliffhanger at the end of episode six was too much to leave us with for a two year wait.
Score & Soundtrack - 1/1 Natalie Holt's score is insane and there's nothing that sounds quite like it. I loved the choice of music in episodes three and four, especially "Demons" playing over the Marvel Studios intro. My favourite tracks from the score through were "Loki Green Theme", "Dangerous Variant" and "Alligator Bite."
Set & Costume Design - 0.95/1 The amazing look of TVA's interior was all practical and captured a vintage feel while still having a sci-fi feel and look. The costumes were brilliantly done, the TVA uniforms and Loki variants' outfits were all standouts.
Themes - 0.85/1 I felt the themes of narcissism, destiny and freewill were all portrayed well, successfully showing how each character highlights the themes. Each Loki variant showing how narcissism is rooted into who they are. So much so that Loki falling in love with himself becomes a major plot point and the TVA's sole purpose to eradicate free will from the every universe.
Tone - 0.9/1 The show knows when to have a serious moments and when to make jokes, with episode five especially succeeding with the comedy. However, at no time does it spend the entire time forcing laughs out of you, rather it focuses on developing your connection to the characters, especially Owen Wilson's Mobius.
Uniqueness - 1/1 A really unique show with interesting moments other shows wouldn't be able to accomplish nearly as well. The whole TVA as a whole is such an awesome idea and I can't wait for it to be explored more in the second season.
Overall Thoughts A must-watch show for any Marvel fan and perfect for anyone who hasn't been keeping up with the MCU since Endgame or even those looking for a fun Sci-Fi, Doctor Who/Rick and Morty-esque adventure. Easily the best show of Marvel's "Phase Four."
Bring on season two!
