Genius Annotation

Khalid described “Location” in an interview with Pigeons and Planes:

Location’ is a story of young love. The kind of love that you would travel all over the country to find. It’s just a story of searching for something that we all want in life no matter who we are and that’s a real genuine lover, but it doesn’t come easy.

The track reached a wider audience after Kylie Jenner featured it in her Snapchat story on May 27th, 2016—Khalid appreciated the boost.

What inspired Khalid to write this song?
Verified Commentary

I first got inspired to write “Location” when I heard the loop of the beat. I was like, “Yo, run that back.” And then after that it kind of just reminded me of this digital, cellphone-type text or ringtone. After that, the words just wrote themselves. It was just like, “Send me your location,” and it was super catchy, so I started rolling with it. I took it back to El Paso. It reminded me of this girl I was talking to, and I wanted to impress her, so I just finished the song there.

How did Khalid come across the beat?

I was in Atlanta with Syk Sense, one of the producers of the song. We were going back and forth. It was after a long studio session, and he really built it, and we just vibed. We were kind of rocking. We felt the beat. Tunji Ige was on the drums, and there’s a couple of other people a part of it, too. It was fluid. It’s almost like the song created itself. We were just the pilots. We were just steering into the right direction and it came out super dope.

How long did it take Khalid to write this song?

Like around 30 mins. I already had the chorus, so I brought it back to El Paso. I actually took the first verse from another song I had wrote before, because I was like, “This fits with this more than it would fit with that.” And then the rest of it, I was just in the studio, my friends were in the studio, my mom was in the studio and I just kept going and kept freestyling under my breath until the song came. It was fun.
