It focused a lot more on story and down to earth situations and handled serious issues and less on comedy compared to the other Disney live-action shows. It's more of a slice of life drama a la As Told By Ginger rather than a comedy like Zack and Cody and Hannah Montana. It had comedy sprinkled in, but it wasn't the main focus

Comedy absolutely was the main focus of Lizzie McGuire. It's a single camera comedy though so it feels different than the typical Disney sitcom we've come to know
Comedy was the main focus? It always came off to me as a teen slice of life drama like As Told By Ginger on Nickelodeon. That show never gets called a comedy, yet Lizzie does. I don't even see shows like Arthur or Hey Arnold get called comedies that much and yet, Lizzie McGuire is always called a sitcom, which is situational comedy

I disagree. It did handle those serious coming of age moments, but it was also largely comedic. She had a cartoon version of herself talking to the audience and reacting to everything in an exaggerated manner.
All the storylines with Matt are meant to be comedic. While it is a show that dealt with serious situations from time to time it was a sitcom through and through. There are plenty of sitcoms that deal with serious situations throughout their run, but it doesn’t make them any less of a sitcom. I feel like because it didn’t have a laugh track that let you know when you were supposed to laugh, it gives a different vibe than other Disney shows and that may play into you not thinking it is a comedy.
