Liz Hannah Holds A Hot Emmy Ticket From ‘Plainville’ To ‘Dropout’ As A Writer, Producer, Director On Two Major Limited Series – Behind The Lens

Liz Hannah is certainly having a good season, with strong buzz for not one but two top Limited Series Emmy contenders, both on Hulu. For The Girl From Plainville, which stars Elle Fanning as the controversial Michelle Carter, who was convicted of essentially bringing about her boyfriend’s suicide, Hannah was creator, showrunner, executive producer, writer and director of several episodes. For The Dropout, she was executive producer and a writer on the tale of the notorious Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes as played by Amanda Seyfried.

Both are based of course of true stories, and both shows actually have some key things in common — themes that drew Hannah to them in the first place. She joins me today for the latest edition of my Deadline video series Behind the Lens as we examine everything that went into the creation of both shows, why they are important, the driving force between these two women and the appeal of bringing non-fiction stories to the small screen.

Hannah also talks about the circuitous route that has taken her career to this point including the “spec” script for The Post that launched her journey, attracted Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, and won a Best Picture Oscar nomination plus an important WGA Award for the then-new writer. Her credits also include the Charlize Theron-Seth Rogen comedy Longshot, the popular series Mindhunter, the movie All the Bright Places and more. We talk about all those as well.
