May 6, Infinite Synapse, May 9. Queens College live-streams the annual Student Choreography Showcase, which presents a variety of dance techniques from contemporary to West African and traditional Irish dance.

 

May 7, Our World’s Fair History, noon. Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park docent Linda Fisher offers her popular virtual tour of the 1939/40 and 1964/65 World’s Fairs as part of the Municipal Art Society’s annual Jane’s Walk event.

 

May 7, Movement Scores, May 30. Artist Katy Martin paints on her skin, which she then photographs and prints on cotton rag paper. She also makes large-scale paintings with her body, by dipping her torso into liquid paint and rubbing it down the side of the canvas. This exhibition, which features Martin’s recent photographs and paintings, has an opening reception on May 8 at 4 pm. The Garage Art Center, 26-01 Corporal Kennedy St., Bayside.

May 7, The Underground Spiritual Game, 7 pm. This group explores music from Ethiopia, West Africa, Argentina, and the Middle East. Watch them perform virtually from The Plaxall Gallery in Long Island City as part of Culture Lab LIC.

 

May 7, Beacon Virtual Panel, 5:30 pm. The Lewis Latimer House Museum moderates a discussion with artist Shervone Neckles, who created the Beacon installation on the museum’s property, and Beam Center. They’ll discuss the design and making of the sculpture in connection to Lewis Latimer’s historical legacy.

 

May 8, Sightseeing Cruise, 12:30 pm. Skyline Cruises kicks off its season of 3.5-hour water tours of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, New York Bay, etc. One World’s Fair Marina, Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

 

May 8, Sheep Shearing, 11 am to 4 pm. Farm animals get haircuts, along with artisan wool spinning and weaving demonstrations that showcase the fiber process from sheep to fabric. Plus, Mama Juke performs New Orleans-influenced sounds, and the Con Edison Ecology booth presents the Adopt-A-Worm composting program. May 8, Learn How To Bird Watch, 10 am. Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park docent Jacqueline Colson and the NYC Parks Urban Park Rangers lead a birding hike around Willow Lake. May 10, Game Play: Brindlewood Bay, 6:30 pm. Museum of the Moving Image Education Game Artist-in-Residence Sharang Biswas leads an online game play experience during which participants solve murder cases.

 

May 11, Music Makers: Caili O’Doherty, 7 pm. Pianist, composer, arranger, and educator Caili O’Doherty, who has a Masters of Music in Performance from Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, returns to her alma mater to offer a virtual concert.

 

May 11, Center of Attention: Monument to the Plow, 8 pm. Matthew Capezzuto from The Noguchi Museum leads an interactive virtual learning program for adults centered on Noguchi’s unrealized 1933 earthwork “Monument to the Plow.”

 

May 12, New American Voices: Ghost Story, 8 pm. Experience an early performance of “Ghost Story” by Lia Romeo via Queens Theatre. In this new play, Lydia meets a cute guy and brings him back to her apartment, but things keep getting in the way — like the fact that her apartment might have an angry ghost.

 

May 12, Virtual Jazz Jam, 7 pm. On the first Wednesday of every month, musicians hone skills and jam with peers during this Flushing Town Hall program. The house band is led by saxophonist Carol Sudhalter, and this month’s theme is songs by and for mothers or about motherhood, especially Jewish mothers. Don’t play? Listen!

 

May 12, Making Movie Magic: Great Gatsby, 7 pm. Director Baz Lurhman used research from the Greater Astoria Historical Society to create a vision for his 2015 film “The Great Gatsby.” This virtual walking tour through NYC in the 1920s is related to the film.

 

May 13, Flamenco + Latin American Rhythms, May 15. Thalía Spanish Theatre, which is open with limited capacity, presents five versions of a vibrant musical round trip between Spain and Latino America. Watch Danny Boyle’s groundbreaking zombie film after an introduction by infectious disease epidemiologist Caitlin Rivers about how quickly viruses can spread and the importance of interventions like vaccines. May 13, Gregg Bordowitz: I Wanna Be Well, Oct. 11. Queens-raised Bordowitz transformed his art in response to the AIDS crisis in the mid-1980s. Working with New York’s ACT UP and several video collectives that he co-founded, he organized and documented protests against government inaction, advocating for health education and harm reduction. Bordowitz created remarkable video portraits of himself and others living with the disease. This exhibition surveys 30 years of his practice alongside the coalitions of activists, artists, writers, thinkers, and friends. MoMA PS1, 22-25 Jackson Ave., Long Island City.
