Biography
Ryan started out as a punk drummer in a band known as Blank Label, and later as lead singer in The Patty Duke Syndrome. Ryan would later describe punk rock as "too hard to sing" in the song "Faithless Street" (later renamed "Angels Are Messengers From God") by his new outfit, Whiskeytown. Whiskeytown was part of the burgeoning alt-country movement which traced its roots to the work of a number of artists, most notably Gram Parsons. Their last album together, 2001's Pneumonia, was held up by legal troubles and didn't come out until after the group had disbanded.
Ryan made his solo debut in 2000, with Heartbreaker. Emmylou Harris sang backup on "Oh My Sweet Carolina," which quickly became a fan favorite. The album was met with considerable critical success, but sales were slow.
In 2001, Ryan released Gold, a sprawling sixteen-song album with a four-song bonus disc. On September 7, 2001, Ryan made a video for "New York, New York," from this album. Featuring Ryan standing on the New Jersey shoreline, with the twin towers of the World Trade Center looming over his shoulders, and Ryan singing "I still love you New York," it became a near-immediate staple on MTV in the days following 9/11.
Ryan has released many albums since, and all have met with critical success to some extent, but he has not had a breakthrough hit. A broken hand suffered in a fall from the stage during a performance in Liverpool, England, in support of the album Rock n Roll put an end to his touring schedule for a while.
In April 2005, Adams began touring with his new backing band, The Cardinals, and a double album, Cold Roses, was released in May. It was quickly followed up with Jacksonville City Nights, which included a duet with Norah Jones.
It was announced in early 2009 that Adams planned on taking a "step back" from music and would no longer perform with the Cardinals due in part to a diagnosis of Ménière’s disease. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that Adams was engaged to singer / actress Mandy Moore. His first book, Infinity Blues was released in 2009.
