facebook.com/WalesOnline THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 SOUTH WALES ECHO 3 News Homes destroyed and dozens killed in WWII bombing The village of Cwmparc was bombed in April 1941 MANY stories have their place in Welsh history, but not everyone knows the tragic tale about the Rhondda village that was torn apart when it was bombed during the Second World War. The mining village of Cwmparc was initially known as a safe haven during the Second World War. In fact young evacuees from big towns and cities travelled there in an attempt to escape the bombing and, despite its valuable supply of coal, the Rhondda was mostly left alone. But, one night, the community was suddenly introduced to the cold reality of conflict. It was on April 29, 1941, that the small village just outside Treorchy was left devastated by a raid from the German air force, the Luftwaffe. At the time, the event was described as the biggest loss of life in a single night in the Rhondda. On that dreadful day bombs were dropped on to the village in what was thought to most likely be a getaway raid. It’s believed the Luftwaffe failed to reach Swansea docks or Port Talbot, so ditched their bombs to lighten their load before returning to their base. But, by doing so, they took the lives of 27 innocent people – including several children. The youngest, John Williams, the son of Thomas Williams, was just 18 months old. The blitz ripped the community to shreds, and it was only a matter of minutes before the village was ablaze. But Parc Road and Tregarne Street were the areas that saw the worst Twenty-seven people lost their lives in a South Wales village in April 1941 – with the youngest just 18 months old. Katie-Ann Gupwell reports... damage, as terraced houses were reduced to rubble. In 2018, 85-year-old Roy Pugh recalled the ear-piercing explosions, despite being just eight years old when the tragedy took place. He remembered dramatic scenes where windows were shattered, and complete darkness fell over the village. “I lived with my parents, younger sister Beryl and my brother Colin at Barrett Street,” said Roy. “We shared the house with Mr and Mrs Rees and their three children, living in the rear downstairs room and one of the back bedrooms. “The rear of the house faced the direction of the area known as the ‘Bombed Houses’ – that is Parc Road.” Mr Pugh, who later moved to Neath, said the two families were asleep when they heard the warning siren start to blare, but admitted it “didn’t cause too much concern” because the village was familiar with the sound of the siren. It didn’t often result in an attack. But when the bedroom windows began to shake, Mr Pugh knew this time was different. “My father thought it was caused by wind but mother was adamant that we were being bombed, so we went downstairs, followed by the Rees family,” he said. “Then came a loud explosion which confirmed we were being bombed. That put the frighteners on us all. “The windows were damaged, slates were blown off the roof, rafters were broken, the ceilings in some rooms collapsed and furniture was damaged.” Mr Pugh and his family were evacuated to his aunt’s house in Ton Pentre the day after the blitz. Devastatingly, one of the most tragic events the night witnessed was the death of three young evacuees – they were siblings who had been evacuated to the Rhondda. George, 13, Arthur, 11, Vera, 10, and Joan, eight, from the Jameson family had been evacuated from East Ham in London to avoid the blitz. The children were living with a Cwmparc family at Treharne Street but, sadly, their house was hit during the explosions. Vera was the only evacuee to survive. In 2006, Vera died at her Essex home aged 75 and her sister Margaret Campbell told the Leader how the incident went on to impact her life. “On the night the bombs fell on Cwmparc my mother and sister Pat were visiting the Rhondda and were in a house which escaped the bombing. “Vera never wanted to talk about the bombing, but her greatest wish was to have her ashes scattered on the grave of her two brothers and sister in Treorchy cemetery. She always said that she was buried once in Cwmparc in 1941 and did not want to be buried again.” In 2019 a memorial to remember those killed in the Blitz bombing was given the go-ahead. The Cwmparc Blitz Memorial Project was given permission to build a memorial on land off Park Road in Cwmparc in memory of those who lost their lives. It was hoped the memorial, which was to be dedicated to the servicemen and women from the area who died fighting for their country in the world wars and other conflicts, would be revealed to the public this month. But, tragically, one of the people at the forefront of the memorial project passed away before getting to see it unveiled. Robert Leighton Davies QC, 71, died on July 1 this year following what his family described as a “brave” battle with cancer. He was diagnosed with the illness in March. Mr Davies was born in Cwmparc in 1949, and was instrumental in recent years in bringing into place a memorial for the victims of the Cwmparc Blitz. The memorial was due to see a grand opening this year, but was put off due to the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier this year his son, Rhoss Davies, said: “He was fiercely proud of his Rhondda heritage – especially his hometown of Cwmparc. “In recent years, he was passionate about creating a memorial to commemorate the lives lost. “This resulted in him setting up the Cwmparc Blitz Memorial Project, of which he was chairman. “He worked tirelessly to help raise funds, plan the project and to engage with the local community. “He greatly looked forward to attending the opening ceremony.” EVERYTHING IN ONE PLACE InYourArea is a new personalised newsfeed which brings together all the latest news for your local area from news sites, blogs and social networks. WPR2ND 4 PONTY AND RHONDDA THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 @WalesOnline News Concerns as elderly people still not using the buses ELDERLY people are still making only half the number of bus journeys they did before the pandemic, sparking concerns about isolation and mental health. When Wales pioneered unlimited free bus travel for pensioners and disabled people almost 20 years ago, one of the main justifications was to encourage people to remain active, socialise and live as independently as possible. But in the first Covid-19 lockdown, governments in Cardiff and London said public transport was for essential journeys only. Bus managers believe the same governments have not messaged loudly enough about public transport now being safe and beneficial to use, with the result that many older people are not using the bus or are making fewer bus trips than before. Heléna Herklots, Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, said: “I’ve spoken to many older people throughout Wales during the pandemic who have shared their concerns about using public transport due to the potential risk of catching and becoming seriously ill from Covid. “Whilst some older people will have been able to rely on lifts from family or friends, this is not an option for many others, which has left them potentially unable to access key services, including health services. Restoring older people’s confidence to use public transport again and reconnect with their communities again is crucial to support people’s health, wellbeing and independence.” Her office conducted research with 660 older people in 2011 which found that without the concessionary bus pass, 81% would suffer a worse quality of life and 78% would be more lonely and housebound. Also, 92% agreed the bus pass allowed them to be independent. Journeys using free bus passes are back to just 51% of their prepandemic level on Newport Transport’s buses. Fare-paying passengers are back to 46% – a figure which will be affected by more home working and less commuting than before Covid-19. Josh Miles, director of industry body CPT Cymru, said: “The bus industry stands ready to play its part in the recovery from Covid-19. It’s a social service as well as a bus service.” Recycled paper content of UK newspapers in 2016 was 62.8% Minor injury unit to stay closed until further notice THE minor injury unit at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon at Mountain Ash is to stay shut until further notice because of “staffing issues”. For people in the Tonypandy area this would mean an 18-mile journey to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. While no details have been given on when the unit will reopen, bosses hope the situation will be resolved quickly. A spokesman said: “The minor A HEALTH board has made the “difficult decision” to restrict visiting at its hospitals. However, news of the announcement has been met with dismay by people living in the area. One person said: “Prince Charles A&E is bad enough as it is... I get we are in a pandemic, but these issues have been around well before Covid, more needs to be done to make the NHS the service it should be.” ■One partner attendance at ultrasound scan appointments will be limited to the appointments at 12 weeks (dating scan) and 20 weeks (anomaly scan) and some scans arranged via our Early Pregnancy Service; ■Paediatrics and neonatal areas (one person only as agreed with the clinical team); and, SPORT mw-celticsport@walesonline.co.uk ADVERTISING Louise Mack ......................... 07943 519429 louise.mack@mediawales.co.uk CLASSIFIED Customer Services ............. 029 2022 2444 customerservices@mediawales.co.uk Newspaper Sales ................ 029 2024 4350 Ysbyty Cwm Cynon in Mountain Ash Another added: “Heaven help Prince Charles Hospital.” While it remains unclear if the staffing issues are a knock-on effect of Covid, the news comes amid continued pressures on the NHS in Wales. In June, Professor Kelechi Nnoaham, director of public health at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board, said contending with the dual issue of coronavirus and routine care meant NHS bed occupancy had been stretched to its very limits. WPR2ND 8 PONTY AND RHONDDA THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 @WalesOnline News Photograph marathon winners revealed The winners of this year’s Rhondda Cynon Taf Photomarathon have been revealed THE winners of this year’s Rhondda Cynon Taf Photomarathon have been revealed. The Photomarathon competition sets a 24-hour time limit for participants to submit pictures for 12 different topics that allow participants to express their creativity through the medium of photography. The competition was once a popular event in Cardiff drawing widespread participation but was scrapped in 2017. Father and daughter team Gaby and Alan Bromage decided to bring it to Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT) to carry MORGAN HUGHES Reporter morgan.hughes@walesonline.co.uk on the event and allow people to continue to take part. Gaby said: “As someone who has grown up in the Rhondda, there aren’t always many opportunities here, especially opportunities to be creative. “I remember how much I used to love taking part in the Cardiff Photomarathon and wanted to be able to pass that excitement on to others. As the competition welcomes individual interpretation it means that it is so inclusive to everybody – regardless of age or photography skill level.” The overall 2021 winner of the competition was Todd Campbell. Todd said: “I’ve only really been doing amateur photography for two to three years. I bought a camera for my girlfriend’s birthday and I ended up using it more than she did. I thought it was really cool that someone was putting a photography event together in the community. “I’m a musician so I used to do a lot of travelling before Covid, that’s what made the hobby work for me, when I was travelling I would take photos in different cities. Lockdown put an end to that so the Photomarathon was really the first time I got out to use the camera again. “I was so surprised by the prizes, I got an Amazon gift voucher which I’ve already spent on a new flash for my camera, Penderyn whisky, membership to the Royal Photographic Society and framed collage of my 12 photo entries for the competition.” Jacqueline Jones-Thomas was runner up. In the Under-18 category Ariane Burgess took the crown, The RCT Photomarathon covers the entire Rhondda Cynon Taf community from Llantrisant to Penderyn, anyone could enter, you did not have to be a RCT resident. RCT Photomarathon said: “It was tricky in the beginning with the main event being postponed due to Covid. “We had to find ways to keep the excitement levels high so we ran free mini online competitions, one during lockdown and another at Halloween. “RCT Photomarathon will most definitely be back next year!” Special Guest ‘Santa Claus’ 11am –1pm Rhondda’s Largest Christmas Store Grand Opening Saturday 18th September Let’s make this Christmas the Greatest www.seasonaloutlet.co.uk

WPR2ND 12 PONTY AND RHONDDA THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 @WalesOnline News Driver in horror crash had no licence and flat tyre – inquest LUCY JOHN Reporter lucy.john@walesonline.co.uk A MAN who died in a “horrific” crash which saw a second man killed was driving without a licence and with a flat tyre, an inquest heard last week. Gavin Carter, 27, of Oakwood Drive, Tonyrefail, died on October 16, 2019, at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff a day after he drove his partner’s car to Merthyr Tydfil. He was travelling from his work in Swansea while his rear left tyre was “underinflated”. The inquest was told how Mr Carter crashed the black Renault Megane into a blue Renault Kangoo van which was being driven by 63-year-old David Peter Jones in the vicinity of Cefn Coed on the A465 Heads of the Valleys road. Mr Jones, of Bryn Onnen in Penderyn, died at the scene of the crash on October 15. During an inquest held at Pontypridd Coroners’ Court, senior coroner for South Wales Central Graeme Hughes described Mr Carter’s actions as “reckless and at worst dangerous”. Simon Morgan, a paramedic who was called to the scene at 4.29pm on the day of the incident, said he arrived at 4.33pm. He said when he got there Mr Jones appeared “lifeless” and that emergency services “had great difficulty trying to remove him from the crash vehicle”. He believed Mr Jones had been in the vehicle for about 20 minutes and he was pronounced dead at 4.52pm. He was found to have had a number of injuries which included broken ribs, a fractured pelvis, and damage to his internal organs. Mr Carter’s mother, Lynne Knight, told the hearing her son was in the process of getting his “dream” career of becoming a scaffolder. In a previous tribute released by his family he was described as a “loving dad-ofone”. The inquest then heard a statement from Christopher Shaw, a nurse at Swansea Bay University Health Board’s critical care team who attended the collision as part of the response team. He said when he arrived Mr Carter was lying on his back on the ground and appeared to have a “significant” head injury. He was administered treatment before being taken by road to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. However due to the “unsurvivable” nature of his injuries Mr Carter was pronounced dead at 1.30pm on October 16, a day after the crash. On the day of the crash the inquest heard how Mr Carter had been travelling back to Merthyr Tydfil where his partner lived after spending the day at work at ASW, an industrial estate in Blaenymaes in Swansea. ASW site manager David Jenkins told the inquest how he noticed Mr Carter had a flat tyre and notified him before he drove off. Gavin Carter Mr Jenkins said: “I noticed a black Renault Megane parked outside on the pavement. On the passenger side [I noticed] the rear tyre was flat. It looked a lot flatter than the front tyre. “Mr Carter came back and got into the car. At this time I didn’t know who he was. When he got into the car he started reversing back. It was at this time that me and my colleague went and flagged him down to tell him his tyre was flat. He put the window down and we told him and he got out.” Mr Jenkins said Mr Carter then felt the tyre with his hand and then his foot. Mr Jenkins continued: “He said, ‘I haven’t got time for this sh*t’ before he got back into his car and started to drive back out of the site. When he was reversing back the noise was similar to a tyre deflated [going] across the road. He left at 3.30pm.” Next the coroner spoke to Mr Carter’s partner, Julie Davies, who appeared at the inquest in person. The pair had been together for around 20 months prior to the incident. She said the black Renault Megane was her car and that she would David Peter Jones drive it regularly. She had had the car for around four months prior to the incident. She said she was not aware that Mr Carter had ever used her car before the incident and that she had no idea he had taken the car to work. When asked by the coroner whether she would ever lend her car to her partner, she said she had not done so because he “didn’t have a licence”. Ms Davies said she was only aware that her partner would take “trains and buses” when travelling to places like work and therefore she never suspected he might use her car. She said a week before the incident she had her tyres checked at a garage when getting petrol – something she did from time to time to keep her car safe. She said on that occasion one of the front tyres was over-inflated and had to be let down but said she was told the other three tyres were fine. She said the last time she saw her partner was on the Sunday evening before the incident. She told the coroner they drove from his home in Tonyrefail, which he shared with his mother, to Merthyr where she lived as The scene of the crash in October 2019 she felt unwell. She said she was unsure when Mr Carter left but that she thought it might have been an hour or so after they arrived. She said she only found out the car was in use when the police called her on Tuesday to tell her Mr Carter had been involved in a collision. Mr Hughes then spoke to Tania Webb, a witness who had been driving from Resolven to her home in Bedlinog after finishing work. She said “the weather was nice and dry” on the day of the incident. She said she was driving in the inner lane of the three-lane road when the black Megane driven by Mr Carter overtook her by going into the middle lane. She said this gave her no cause for concern. She said there was a red Fiesta in front of them both which was being driven fairly slowly. “[Mr Carter] came back into the lane in front of me and noticed the Fiesta and then he pulled out again,” she said. “I went to put my indicator on to overtake [the Fiesta] as well because it was doing a lot slower. I didn’t get as far as overtaking... I could see the Kangoo van coming down [on the opposite side of the road].” Ms Webb said the Megane seemed to be travelling smoothly however it continued moving into the third lane – for traffic travelling in the opposite direction – as it tried to overtake the Fiesta. A second witness, Mark Rees, said he saw the Kangoo “flip” before it landed on its roof and went down the embankment. He said he stopped and called 999 immediately and said he needed all the emergency services. He said he regularly drove that route and had seen many bumps and accidents but this was the “most horrific” he had ever seen. Mr Rees said he saw the black Megane enter the far lane on the opposite side of the road. He said the car “just went straight across” and that it happened within “seconds”. At the time of the incident PC Christopher Goddard was a senior collision investigator with Gwent Police. He said he was tasked to the incident after no collision investigator was available from South Wales Police at the time. He said both drivers appeared to be wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision and that based on investigation work he found evidence that neither Mr Carter or Mr Jones managed to apply their brakes before they made contact with each other. Mr Goddard said it was likely that Mr Carter was travelling between 66 and 68 miles per hour at the time of the collision. He said Mr Carter would have driven for around 34 miles between his work and the point of collision. He said “multiple factors” were at play which led to the crash. He added: “I would be surprised if he wasn’t aware something was amiss driving for 30 miles with a flat tyre. Even if you haven’t lost control, the car will feel [off] and not [feel] as it should.” Mr Hughes said at the time of the crash Mr Jones was travelling towards his home and added: “His vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a car while he was lawfully driving.” Mr Hughes described Mr Jones’ injuries as “catastrophic” and “unsurvivable” and concluded Mr Jones died as a result of a road traffic collision. The medical cause of his death was given as multiple injuries. He also concluded that Mr Carter’s death was as a result of a road traffic collision. His medical cause of death was given as a devastating brain injury. Mr Hughes said: “Gavin Carter was not licensed to drive the vehicle he was driving on October 15, 2019. The absence [of the licence], in my judgement, was partially causative. If he had been licensed he would have had to observe the Highway Code as all licensed drivers do. He would have been alerted [he was] driving the vehicle with sub-optimal tyre pressure. “I don’t find the speed [of Gavin’s vehicle] to be in itself causative of the collision. The greater the speed, the greater the risk of loss of control when set against the tyre pressure.” Mr Hughes said Mr Carter was likely wearing flip-flops at the time of the collision. He said: “There’s simply no other logical explanation. However, their significance [to the fatalities] is doubtful.” The coroner said Mr Carter was “reckless and at worst, dangerous” for driving without a licence and proceeding to drive despite knowing his tyre was “significantly underinflated”. He added that Mr Carter put both “himself and other road users at risk”, claiming not only his own life but Mr Jones’ as well. Mr Hughes offered his “deepest condolences” to both families involved.

The management decided, after very full discussions, to take the decision not to accept the invitation to take part as the worsening situation with the pandemic is too much of a risk for the players whose safety was their first priority. Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals has been part of this working partnership for the past 10 years FAW medical services manager and lead physiotherapist Sean Connelly said: “By collaborating with Nuffield Health, we are able to provide state-of-the-art clinical management of football medicine issues, including surgical and non-surgical expertise in musculoskeletal medicine for male and female players of all ages, ranging from recreational amateurs through to elite professionals.” INJURY PREVENTION Nuffield Health consultant orthopaedic knee surgeon Chris Wilson said the partnership had helped see fewer football-related injuries over the last decade. He said: “To ensure their accreditation with FIFA, the Football Association of Wales works closely with Nuffield Health’s surgical specialists and diagnostic facilities and with research partners in injury prevention and treatment. “Over the years, we have had significant success in reducing football injuries at the higher levels in football, using this collaborative approach.” By working alongside the FAW, the service can often give players returning to the game following an injury, confidence and encouragement, both mentally and physically. Rhys Thomas, Nuffield Health consultant orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon, said, “We are delighted that the FAW and FIFA continue to collaborate with Nuffield Health as a centre of excellence. This allows all levels of athletes to be confident in the healthcare pathway needed to return them to football.” HIGH STANDARDS The partnership also helps develop and nurture more medical specialists who can continue the good work being done. Even when they are over in September, they still aren’t really finished since the dried flowers remain on the plants and fade attractively over many more weeks. The long-lasting hydrangea flowers make them popular for cutting – pick while they are still fresh and stand in a jar filled with a mixture of glycerine and water till they dry out naturally. They’ll often take on a lovely metallic tint and keep for many months. Hydrangeas come in a range of colours – reds, pinks, mauves, purple and blue. The shade can vary depending on the soil. Harvest early vegetables as soon as they are big enough TO DO LIST ■ To make a new lawn later this autumn, start digging over vacant ground where you’ll want to sow or lay turf. ■ Harvest early leeks, sprouts and autumn cabbages when they’re big enough to use as they won’t last long into winter. Leave late varieties to continue growing. ■ Place orders for fruit trees and bushes from mail order catalogues or online. These plants can only be delivered while dormant, so they’ll usually arrive between November and March. ■ Show off late plants without any distracting clutter by tidying up borders. Save part-used packets for next year Scilla Daffodils Here’s a tip that will save you money. If you have any half-empty packets of veg or flower seeds left over at the end of this season, store them and use them up next year. There’s no point storing packets that you’ve left out in the greenhouse as the heat, damp and light will have taken their toll. But it’s worth saving part-used packets you’ve kept indoors in dry conditions and at a fairly steady temperature. Find a large, screw-top glass jar or airtight biscuit tin and pack part-used packets inside, along with any unopened packets. If possible add a sachet of silica gel – the sort that comes with photographic or electronic equipment. Kept this way, most veg and flower seeds will come up a year later. But don’t expect as high a percentage to germinate – it pays to sow them slightly thicker than normal to make up for it. WCV1ST 20 CYNON VALLEY LEADER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 @WalesOnline Your Money POUND NOTES Entertainment platforms were the most popular service people signed up to Debt collectors don’t typically visit but they can ■ One in 10 (10%) shoppers who use buy now pay later have been chased by debt collectors, according to Citizens Advice. Around one in eight (12% ) 18 to 34 year old customers using the service had received contact from or been referred to debt collectors, the charity’s research also found. These options often appear at checkouts on retailers’ websites. They can help spread the cost of purchases, interestfree, potentially avoiding expensive credit. However, there have been concerns that some people end up spending more than intended and slide into debt that they cannot comfortably pay back. Citizens Advice estimates from its latest research that shoppers using these agreements across the UK were collectively charged £39m in late fees in the past year. It commissioned a survey of more than 2,000 adults across the UK in July, who had used the service in the previous 12 months. The charity said debt collectors do not typically visit someone’s home, although this occasionally can happen, and they do not have rights to take belongings. High streets are getting busier ■ Shopping destinations saw footfall continue to recover last month as staycations helped boost spending. The latest footfall monitor by retail researchers Springboard showed footfall in August was 18.6% lower than the same month in 2019 but this was a significant improvement against July, which had seen a 24.2% decline. Springboard said it highlighted progress in the recovery of shopper numbers, with the fall dipping below 20% for the first time since the pandemic started. Diane Wehrle, marketing and insights director, said footfall activity, particularly in high streets, was boosted by “the popularity of staycations and daycations in August”. ENTERTAINMENT PLATFORMS, FITNESS SERVICES AND MEAL KIT DELIVERIES WERE A LOCKDOWN HIT AND MANY BELIEVE THEY’RE HERE TO STAY – SO USE THEM SMARTLY, SAYS VICKY SHAW Making the most of your subscriptions? MANY of us signed up to new subscriptions to keep ourselves entertained during the pandemic. Despite many people now spending less time at home catching up on box-sets and cooking as lockdown restrictions ease, a large number are staying signed up to their subscription services. Eight in 10 (81%) UK households are signed up to at least one subscription, up from around twothirds (65%) last year, according to Barclaycard Payments. It put the value of the ‘subscription economy’ at around £395m – up by 23% compared with 12 months ago. Meanwhile, 40% of people say they’re planning to sign up for more services, despite the easing of restrictions. Entertainment platforms were found to be the most popular service people have signed up to, followed by food and meal boxes. But the booming popularity of subscriptions has also led to retailers expanding into providing a greater range of bespoke and customisable offerings. The more novel subscriptions people are signed up to include deliveries of cheese, musical instruments, and even underwear, the research found. People aged between 25-54 are particularly likely to have fitness subscriptions, while restaurant meal kits are popular with those aged 18-24. Meanwhile, over-55s are particularly likely to be signed up to regular services related to their pets, according to the findings. When it comes to the age groups most likely to be signing up, 25 to 34 year olds are most likely to have at least one subscription, at 94% compared with 64% for those aged 65-plus. Yet the older groups are catching up fast, with a 52% increase in the proportion of over-55s with subscriptions over the past year. Some 70% of over-55s are now estimated to have subscriptions. Meanwhile, 18 to 24 year olds estimate they spend the most per year on subscriptions, at £874. This age group also claims to save the most via subscriptions (£338), followed by those aged 25-34 (£334). Younger consumers were also particularly likely to say they listen to the recommendations of influencers and celebrities, Barclaycard Payments found. A general agreement was found Fitness subscriptions have proved popular with those aged 25 to 54 across all age groups that subscriptions are here to stay. For some people though, it may be time to take a fresh look at what they are paying for – as separate research from website TopCashback found that nearly half (48%) of subscription owners have continued to pay for subscriptions or memberships in the past, despite not getting value for money. Subscribers will continue to pay for six months on average for services that they do not use regularly – wasting around £105 per person. Half of subscribers say they have seen prices hiked in the past few months too. It can be easy to lose track with subscriptions, so here are some tips from website TopCashback... 1. Have a monthly review Looking at what you use and what you don’t every month will help you to spot price hikes. A couple of pounds extra per month might not seem much, but when it’s happening across multiple services, you may want a rethink or have a cull. 2. Set reminders to end free trials If you took up a free trial, enter the expiration date into your calendar to avoid any extra charges. Take time to read through the terms and conditions before Cheese deliveries were one of the more novel subscriptions accepting any trial period, to make sure there are no hidden charges. 3. Use it or lose it Don’t feel guilty about ending your contract. If you express your concerns to the retailer, they may even take some money off your next bill. And if you’re still unhappy, cancel. Just make sure you won’t face charges for cancelling a subscription early. 4. Paying up-front could pay off It may be helpful to pay for subscriptions annually rather than monthly as many firms, such as retailers and gyms, offer a discounted price to members who pay on a yearly basis. You may also be able to save money through cashback websites such as TopCashback.co.uk. Just make sure you are very confident you will be getting the use out of the subscription to warrant forking out up-front. 5. Sharing is caring If you live in shared housing, keep track of the different services you and your housemates subscribe to. If two people subscribe to the same service, you could cancel one contract and split the monthly cost. As long as the company allows for multiple users on a single subscription, you can reduce your costs overall.

facebook.com/WalesOnline WCV1ST THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 CYNON VALLEY LEADER 21 YOUR CONSUMER RIGHTS CHAMPION Students must complain about educational failings All around the UK, parents are fussing around their kids as the new school year starts. Those with older teens are loading bags into the car and heading to university and higher education colleges. This is a stressful time for families – and it’s natural to worry about how your children will cope. So to take the sting out of the new term, I’ve put together a guide on how to make a complaint if something goes wrong with schools, higher education, accommodation or loans. Schools and academies Keep things polite and follow the school’s formal complaints process – all schools must have one – and ask them for the details if it’s not published on a website. Complaints are usually straight– forward. Write to the governing body and/or the head. Make sure you explain simply what it is you’re unhappy with and what you’d like done. If you think the school is not following its own published rules and procedures include examples. If you take it further, the rules are different depending on whether you live in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales. You can find the information on the Government website gov.uk/complain-aboutschool The school might suggest mediation – which is good for many situations. Make sure you take notes at the meeting though. If that doesn’t work the Department for Education (DfE) may be able to look at your complaint. If your child is at private school, you can also go through the school’s complaints procedure, but you can’t go to the DfE if you’re unhappy – and you can’t complain if your child isn’t at the school. Most institutions have a complaints procedure University and higher education I’ve been flooded by questions from students and parents about refunds on university fees for services not being provided. The pandemic has created a situation where for the first time, this is a viable area of complaint – though it’s too early in the day to say how these cases will be settled. In a similar way to complaints about schools, you have to go through the higher education or university complaints procedure first. Set out what it is you’re unhappy with and how you feel the organisation has not met its obligations. It’s the student or former student (not the parent) who must make the complaint. Most importantly, be clear about what it is you want to resolve the problem. If that doesn’t work, you’ll need a Completion of Procedures Letter which the organisation will issue at the end of complaints or appeals process. You can then potentially go to the Office of the Independent Adjudicator. They have loads of great advice and tips on their website oiahe.org.uk/ Student loan complaints Student loan complaints are a little different as you could be making a complaint many years after you finished your education. But the process has been streamlined in recent years, so it’s a bit easier to do now. Contact the Student Loan company first. You need to include quite a bit of info with your complaint, so make sure you read all the advice on their website before sending. Once again, there is an appeals process for free if you’re not happy. gov.uk/government/organisations/ student-loans-company/about/ complaints-procedure Student housing Student housing can sometimes seem expensive, given the size of the rooms – and some of the reports over the last year in the media about quarantined students and rubbish facilities have left many concerned. The good news is accommodation providers have to be licensed with the local authority or be signed up to the Government code which is supposed to ensure standards. If you want to complain, then find out where you need to go through your Uni, or check out the code nationalcode.org ■ Resolver can help with all things education for free at resolver.co.uk Your Money Brits splash out over bank holiday Britons used their payment cards more this August bank holiday weekend than they have at any point since Christmas 2019, before the pandemic struck, according to data just released. Barclaycard, which processes £1 in every £3 spent on debit and credit cards in the UK, said the number of transactions was BOOKING ONLINE NOW AVAILABLE 14.4% higher this bank holiday weekend than the same time last year. On both Saturday and Sunday Barclaycard said it processed more transactions than on any other date since Christmas Eve 2019. “We haven’t seen transaction volumes like these since Christmas 2019, the last major shopping milestone before the pandemic,” said Barclaycard Payments chief executive Rob Cameron. “This is hopefully a sign of more positive times to come, and a testament to the strength and resilience of British businesses when it comes to adapting and thriving in a postlockdown world.” NEW 2021 BROCHURE OUT NOW! WCV1ST 22 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 @WalesOnline RAISE A GLASS WITH JANE CLARE It’s the time of year when retailers and supermarkets are looking to the months and weeks ahead. Much like a fashion show, ideas around the new season’s tastes and treats are shared with people like me so we can share them with people like you. For example, in the last few weeks Tesco has added over 50 wines to its range and I had a little preview. Here are three red wine ideas, in an autumnal frame of mind (and my first two are related). Tesco Finest Primitivo Terre di Chieti (£7): The grapes for this Italian (very) easy-drinking vino grow in vineyards in the Abruzzo hills, overlooking the Adriatic coast. I poured a little bit in my glass and a little bit in a pasta sauce. Then a little bit more in my glass. The primitivo grapes deliver a punch of fresh, ripe black fruits and plum aromas. The flavours tease with more of the same fruits which are pecked with a tickle of spice. The latter lasts longer in the mouth than the fruit. But there’s no complaining to be done here as for the price it’s a lovely little wine. My next is Ravenswood Lodi Zinfandel (£14) at double the price from my Italian choice and an “up” in the quality. There’s no surprise that some of the same fruits and spices come into play with this wine from Lodi, a Californian region which produces brilliant Zinfandel wines. Memories of a childhood bilberry tart, topped with a vanilla cream, flitted in my mind. The wine has a silky depth, complexity and intensity that can’t be matched by the easygoing primitivo. But they know each other, kind of, these two wines; as primitivo is the Italian name for the zinfandel grape. My final Tesco red choice, from top Chilean wine producers, is Errázuriz Max Carmenère (£12). I’ve mentioned in these parts before that carmenère – a Bordeaux grape – was once thought lost until it was rediscovered in Chile in the late ’90s where, until then, it had been masquerading as merlot. Since then, Chile has adopted the grape as its own. Give this wine a warm welcome in your home alongside autumnal feasts of casseroles and cottage pies. The wine is bold with its black fruit flavours yet soft with tannins and inviting with its hints of chocolate. ■ Jane is a member of the Circle of Wine Writers. facebook.com/WalesOnline WCV1ST THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 CYNON VALLEY LEADER 23 Food & Drink CATALAN FISH SOUP (Serves 6) INGREDIENTS: 1 large onion, chopped; 2 tbsp olive oil; 8 garlic cloves: 6 finely chopped and 2 crushed; a good pinch of saffron threads; 2 litres fish stock (use 3 fish stockpots); 100ml dry white wine; 800g new potatoes, peeled and cut into 1.5cm slices; 1 tsp fennel seeds; strips of peel from ½ orange; 800g skinless fish fillets, such as hake or monkfish; 200ml good-quality bought mayonnaise; juice of ½ lemon; good pinch of chilli pepper, plus extra to serve; 4 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley salt and black pepper METHOD: 1. In a wide pan, fry the onion in the oil over low heat, stirring occasionally, for five minutes until it begins to soften. Add the chopped garlic and stir for two minutes until it just begins to colour. 2. Stir in the saffron and pour in the fish stock and the wine, then put in the potatoes, fennel seeds and orange peel and season with salt and pepper. Simmer, covered, for 20-25 minutes until the potatoes are tender. 3. Ten minutes before you serve, remove the orange peel and put in the fish. Cook, covered, over low heat for 4-10 minutes, depending on the fish and the thickness of the fillets, until the fish becomes opaque and the flesh flakes when you cut into it with a pointed knife. Break the fillets into pieces. 4. In a jug, beat the mayonnaise with the lemon juice, the crushed garlic and a pinch of chilli. 5. Just before serving, add a ladleful or two of the hot stock into the mayonnaise mixture and beat it in, then gently stir into the simmering soup. Heat through but do not let it boil or it will curdle. 6. Serve sprinkled with a little parsley. YOGHURT CAKE (Serves 6-8) INGREDIENTS: Butter or sunflower oil for greasing; 4 large eggs, separated; 100g caster sugar; 3 tbsp plain flour; 400g full-fat Greek-style yoghurt; grated zest and juice of 1 unwaxed lemon For the strawberries: 500g strawberries; 60g caster sugar; juice of ½ lemon METHOD: 1. Preheat the oven to 1800C/1600C fan/gas 4. Butter or oil a round non-stick cake tin (about 23cm in diameter) with a removable base. 2. Using an electric whisk, whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form. 3. In another bowl, using the same whisk, beat the egg yolks with the sugar until thick and pale. Add the flour, yoghurt, lemon zest and juice and beat to a homogenous cream. 4. Gently fold the egg whites into the yoghurt mixture and pour into the prepared tin. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the top is lightly browned - watch it carefully for the last few minutes of cooking so that it doesn’t brown too much. The cake will puff up like a souffle and then subside. 5. Let it cool a little before lifting it out onto a serving plate. Serve warm or cold. 6. For a beautiful accompaniment to the yoghurt cake, briefly rinse 500g strawberries, hull and cut them in half through the stem end, then sprinkle with 60g caster sugar and the juice of ½ lemon and leave to stand for an hour. DIY DONNY Our expert answers your questions QWe have a wooden fireplace we want to paint, but there is an ugly brass insert on the outside. We thought we could cover it with tiles. What glue would be best to use? Carol Newell Unfortunately, you can’t tile over brass. A However, if the brass is small and the tiles can get a 70% fixing to a normal wall, then that might hold them in place. Use a grab adhesive such as Stixall. We have a TV on a plastic stand which Q is placed on a glass-top corner unit. We need to get the TV off, but it seems to be stuck fast. What can you recommend? Brenda Cox ADry-cleaning fluid will loosen the sticky stuff which is holding the stand to the corner unit – be sure to wash off any excess fluid. Or use De-Solv-it Sticky Stuff Remover, from Halfords, which is quite impressive. QMy new wooden summer house is pressure-treated, but should I paint it too? If so, with what? There’s so much conflicting advice online – and from relatives! David Taylor You can paint a summer house if you want extra protection AIf it’s pressure treated so that it won’t rot, the key is to keep soil/gravel off the bottom of the timber as you want to keep it dry. You can apply a coating of paint, oil or stain to give an extra layer of protection. For external timber, I always use Osmo wood-care products. QHow do I remove rust from Indian sandstone please? Cheryl Scott ATo remove rust stains, usually the surface is wetted with water and the affected area is treated with a solution of 7-10% dilution of hydrochloric acid. Once the rust starts frothing, scrub it with a stiff bristle brush, and rinse thoroughly with clean water. One treatment almost always works, but re-treatment may be required in some cases. Trelewis kept going and were rewarded with a Marcus Foster consolation. Aberfan Rangers 0-9 Merthyr Saint: Most teams are going to find it difficult against a strong Saints side and at the break they led 3-0, the home side kept going to their credit but Saints added 6 second half goals. The Saints goals came through, Conor John, Leon Pugh, Lewis Howells, Ben Davies, Jack Morris (2) and an Ian Cleary hattrick from the bench. Baili Glas 1-3 Black Lion: The visitors started well with early goals through T. Rees, & L. Phillips and led 2-0 at the break, Ben Mabbitt then got a third Lion goal before C. Terrett got a late consolation for the Baili. Bedlinog 1-6 Georgetown BGC: The Town look a strong side and after this remain un-beaten, Ethan Bevan got two early Town goals and then he scored a third to give the visitors a comfortable lead. Masters Rugby League is played by people aged 35 and over with the rules being slightly modified to cater for the older player. Historically, there have been no winners, no champions and no cup finals – Masters is about is all about the spirit of the game. The most important rule is: “everyone has to buy a drink for their opposite number!” Wales have stuck to their original squad that was selected over a year ago, chosen from players who have been playing regularly for Masters Rugby League clubs. Primarily the JD CYMRU SOUTH squad comes from the two original Masters clubs in Wales – Cardiff Blue Dragons and North Wales Buccaneers, who faced each other in 2019 with Cardiff providing eight of the 19-man squad and North Wales providing nine. Both sides are preparing to play in the Blackpool Masters this weekend. Last year, Wales Masters playercoach Chris Thomas said: “Our team selection was based primarily on the players’ contribution to Masters Rugby League. It was a difficult choice on who to select and for us not to advertise for trials this time, but we decided to reward players on their commitment to their clubs and their training, in addition to how well they played last season. We wanted to make this selection prestigious.” He has stuck to these words and is A Tim Hicks hat-trick wasn’t enough to topple JD South leaders Pontypridd, who battled back to beat Swansea University 4-3. The unbeaten visitors got off to a flying start as they scored twice in the opening three minutes with goals from Luke Gullick and Gavin Beddard. It was Gullick’s 11th of the season and Beddard’s sixth. Hicks made it 2-1 by the break and then levelled matters four minutes into the second half. Taylor Marsh put Ponty ahead once again a few minutes later, but Hicks’ hat-trick made it 3-3 on the hour mark. It was still anyone’s game until Gullick struck again in the 83rd minute to ensure they hung onto their unbeaten record and remain one point ahead of Llantwit Major. Llantwit Major hit the front early in their 2-0 home win over Risca United when Tom Walters converted a fourth minute penalty. Walters then turned provider in the second half as he set-up Kris Evans for a second 10 minutes after the break. Port Talbot Town finally registered their first goal of the season in JD Cyrmu South, but only after they had conceded seven at Taffs Well to remain rooted at the bottom of the now looking forward to this year’s international event which will see Wales’ 10th different representative side take to the field. Since the last World Cup year in 2017, Wales have fielded played full internationals at Senior Men, Senior Women, Wheelchair (mixed men and women), U16, U17 and U19 males, Dragonhearts (men’s community), Male Students and Men’s Nine-a-Side levels. Thomas adds: “The Blackpool Masters this weekend will be a great preparation for us for the International Masters in November. The boys are looking forward to the challenges ahead both on and off the field. It’s a landmark occasion and it’s good to be back on the field at last. The International Masters in Leigh in November, where we’ll face England, Ireland and table. A first half hat-trick in the space of 29 minutes from David Lyon helped to make it 4-0 to the home side at the break and Lyon added a fourth after the break. Then Jake Barrow, in the 84th minute, ended almost 13 and a half hours without a league goal this season. The seven they conceded made it 53 against. Briton Ferry Llansamlet got off to a flying start at home against Trefelin BGC with a second minute goal from Tyler Brock. He struck again in the 36th minute and then Mark Jones made it 3-0 a minute later. The north Wales and Cardiff Masters sides after their matches two years ago Masters RL tournament finally gets the go-ahead Canada, will be another enjoyable weekend where I’m sure rugby league will be the winner. Chris Jones clawed a goal back from the penalty spot after 78 minutes, but any thoughts of a Treflin revival were sunk when Jamie Latham picked up a second yellow card to reduce the visitors to 10 men. Cambrian & Clydach Vale hit the front in their home clash with Afon Lido thanks to a Jordan Smith goal and three minutes later saw Stephen Morris sent-off. That offence yielded a penalty for the home side and Ryan Prosser doubled the lead. It was 3-0 at the break after Ceri Morgan hit the back of the net and Sam and Kyle Jones added to Afon Lido’s agony in the second half.

facebook.com/WalesOnline WCV1ST THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 CYNON VALLEY LEADER 37 Ystrad at the double as they see off Wanderers in the cup YSTRAD Rhondda completed a notable double over Glamorgan Wanderers in Group 2 of the WRU Championship Cup as they followed up their 28-20 away win with a comprehensive 45-17 triumph at home. That made it three successive bonus-point wins to put them four points clear of Cardiff Met at the top of the table and on course for a knockout place later in the season. They host Beddau this weekend and then go to Cardiff Met the week after t determine who goes through. They scored seven tries despite playing for an hour with only 14 men after hooker Liam Wiggins was sentoff for making contact with the head of a Wanderers player with his forearm as he drove into contact with the ball. The Wanderers were still hanging on at half-time, when they only trailed 17-10 and managed to score three tries themselves. Full back Liam Greening scored twice for the home side and further tries came from Ethan Frackell, Corbin Evans, Jarrad Llewellyn, David Webb and Sion Summers with Rhys Truelove converting five of them. There were only two games in the WRU Championship Cup and Narberth’s 25-16 home win over Trebanos means they only need to get a point in the re-match this weekend to ensure winning Group 4. The Otters made it three out of three as they converted a two point interval lead into a comfortable enough triumph in the end. Neath’s 150th anniversary celebrations got off to a familiar start as they welcomed their oldest and dearest of rivals, Swansea to The Gnoll. Claiming to be the oldest club in Wales, Neath played Swansea in their first official fixture in the 1871/72 season in a game in which the outcome was “disputed”. There was no dispute 150 years as the Whites came, saw and conquered in their first game for 18 months. Jay Williams’ side raced into a 17-0 lead early in the second half, although in the end were happy to hang on for a 17-14 victory as Neath hit back with two late tries. Hooker Owen Thomas opened the scoring for the visitors and outside half James Davies added the extras and then converted a second try to make it 14-0 at the break. Davies then kicked a penalty before Neath hit back. Back row man David Griggs and centre Ryan Evans both crossed for tries and Steff Williams converted both to cut the gap in the end to a mere three points. After suffering a double defeat to Maesteg Quins in the WRU Championship Cup a week earlier, it was a much better display from Pat Horgan’s men. Aberavon completed their pre-season build-up with a 40-29 victory at Llandovery. They led the Drovers 24-19 at the break and came good in the second half to erase the memories of their home defeat to Newport the previous weekend. Centre Chay Smith, full back Chris Banfield, No 8 Andrew Waite, wing Matthew Jenkins and flankers Lee Purnell and Lloyd Evans scored their tries and Aled Thomas converted five of them. Further good news for Jason Hyatt’s side came in the announcement that former Ospreys and Wales U20 centre Joe Thomas has returned from playing in the United States to sign for the Wizards. He made his debut at Llandovery. Newport backed-up their win at Aberavon with another at Bridgend as they completed their build-up to the new season. Luke Crane, Cameron Lewis, Eliott Frewen crossed in the first half, with Will Reed converting all Elliot Frewen was among the Newport tries against Bridgend three, before a late penalty try completed the victory. The Dragons have announced which players from their academy will be going out to play in the Indigo Group Premiership this season and Ebbw Vale will have the services of props Harry Fry and Adam Williams, hooker Connor Chapman, Wales U20 lock Joe Peard, back row man Ben Moa, scrum half Che Hope, centre Lewis Bates and back three players Euan Rosser, Carrick McDonagh and Joe Westwood. Boxing Hall of Fame heads for Cardiff this weekend John Conteh THE British Ex-Boxers Hall of Fame event postponed from last year will take place this weekend in Wales. The president of the British Hall of Fame is former world Light-Heavyweight champion John Conteh who has many friends in Wales and is pleased the Welsh Ex-Boxers are staging the event for the first time in Wales. WCV1ST 38 CYNON VALLEY LEADER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 @WalesOnline SPORT Why there’s so much to play for in next two years as Wales’ World Cup squad gradually takes shape... WALES will launch their next World Cup campaign two years from now, on September 10, 2023, when they take on Fiji in Bordeaux. Quite some time for their squad to settle then. Undoubtedly, there will be some who come from a long way back to claim places. In 2017, Wyn Jones had only just broken into the set-up, while Josh Adams hadn’t long returned to Worcester after being farmed out to Cinderford and Aaron Wainwright was making his regional bow for the Dragons. Yet all featured prominently in Wales’ 2019 globaltournament campaign. Surprises happen. But maybe the big question for Wayne Pivac is how many of Wales’ old guard will make it through to France, with golden players such as Alun Wyn Jones, Ken Owens, Jonathan Davies, Dan Biggar, Leigh Halfpenny and Justin Tipuric not getting any younger. In a perfect world Pivac would want them all to be part of his plans, but it will be a challenge, for some more than others. MARK ORDERS assesses the World Cup prospects of those players and others... Back three (5 players likely to be selected) Three certainties to start in the shape of Liam Williams, Louis Rees- Zammit and Josh Adams, recent Lions and surely bound for the big stage again in 2023. Williams seems to have been around forever but will only be 31 come the next global thrash. With fellow Lions Rees-Zammit and Adams, he could help make up one of the best balanced and dangerous back threes in the tournament. We can be less certain about who will travel in the back three alongside them. Leigh Halfpenny will be three months shy of his 35th birthday when World Cup X unfolds, but it’s still hard to put a price on his peerless goalkicking. Might he be there or thereabouts for a last Wales hurrah? Among those with work to do is Ioan Lloyd. The Bristol Bears youngster didn’t feature at all in the summer despite Wales finding the going tough, especially against Argentina. But he’s a player with magic in his game, and if he can sort out his defence he may put himself in the frame, potentially for a utility-back role. Nailed-on: Liam Williams, Louis Rees-Zammit, Josh Adams. Strong contenders: Leigh Halfpenny, Jonah Holmes, Hallam Amos. Work to do: Alex Cuthbert, Johnny McNicholl, Tom Rogers, Ioan Lloyd, Steff Evans, Keelan Giles, Mat Protheroe, Owen Lane, Ashton Hewitt, Ryan Conbeer. Keep an eye on: Corey Baldwin. Centres (3) Aside from George North, who’d been lined up for a Lions spot this summer before a knee injury cruelly torpedoed his chances of touring, it’s hard to think of any other midfielder who could be considered certain to make Pivac’s squad. Jonathan Davies will be 35. It isn’t impossible he will still be on the Test scene – Brian O’Driscoll won his final cap at the same age, while Conrad Smith was a year younger before departing. If Davies can avoid serious injuries, and up his game after last term’s challenges, he could yet surprise some people. Injuries have plagued Johnny Williams, too, and he could do with some good fortune on that front. Up and coming is Aneurin Owen, a nice passer of the ball and a footballer who is slightly different from many centres produced in Wales in recent years. He’ll be 23 during the next World Cup -- just maybe by then he could really be Will Callum Sheedy be World Cup-bound? making an impact. Michael Collins? Depending on how he adapts to life at the Ospreys, he could rapidly move up the pecking order. Nailed on: George North. Strong contenders: Jonathan Davies, Johnny Williams, Willis Halaholo, Nick Tompkins. Work to do: Owen Watkin, Ben Thomas, Aneurin Owen, Scott Williams, Steff Hughes, Tyler Morgan, Michael Collins, Keiran Williams, Max Llewellyn. Fly-halves (2) The position that could potentially cause Wales all kinds of problems for the New Zealand game this autumn, and it’s hard to think of any Welsh No. 10 we can say is definitely going to feature on the elite stage in France in two years’ time. Dan Biggar will be 34 during the tournament, and only one player (Jonathan Davies) has played fly-half for Wales when that age or older over the past 95 years. But Biggar has spent his entire career confounding the doubters, so perhaps it might be wise not to write him off yet. If Gareth Anscombe can return to where he was before the injury that’s taken two years out of his career, he’d be expected to travel. There again, one step at a time. Callum Sheedy, Jarrod Evans and Sam Davies all have admirable qualities, while Dan Jones knows how to guide a side around a pitch. There’s also Sam Costelow to consider. He’s young and has it all to prove at senior level, but there’s a touch of class about him. Possibly, he could interest Pivac. Nailed on: None Strong contenders: Dan Biggar, Gareth Anscombe, Callum Sheedy. Work to do: Rhys Patchell, Jarrod Evans, Sam Davies, Rhys Priestland, Dan Jones. Keep an eye on: Sam Costelow. Scrum-halves (3) There is an argument that Wales have produced more outstanding players in this position than any other over the years. Think Dicky Owen, Gareth Edwards, Terry Holmes, Haydn Tanner, Rex Willis, Robert Jones, Chico Hopkins, Rob Howley, Mike Phillips and Dwayne Peel, and plenty more. But at this stage no-one can be certain of wearing the No. 9 shirt in France in 2023. Does anyone know who the best scrum-half in Wales is right now? Do Wayne Pivac and Stephen Jones know? During their reign no-one has played for Wales with consistent authority in this most important of positions. Does anyone deserve to be considered nailed-on at this stage? Probably not. Maybe over the next couple of years, Tomos Williams will have fully realised his potential. There is still hope he could prove to be a stellar international talent, but we can’t say with absolute certainty that is going to happen. Bubbling under are a potentially bright crop that includes Jamie Hill, of Cardiff Blues, Harri Morgan, from the Ospreys, and Luke Davies, Harri Williams and Archie Hughes, all from the Scarlets. Their time will doubtless come. But that’s for the future. Nailed on: None Strong contenders: Tomos Williams, Keiran Hardy, Gareth Davies. Work to do: Rhys Webb, Lloyd Williams, Rhodri Williams, Dane Blacker. Props (5) The expectation is Wales’ two frontline props from the last World Cup, Wyn Jones and Tomas Francis, will still be at the forefront of the Welsh front-row effort. Jones had a fine Lions tour, George North notwithstanding the injury that caused him problems in the final Test. He and Francis could provide Pivac’s side with a rock-solid scrummaging platform all the way through to the next World Cup and beyond. Gareth Thomas is on the up, while WillGriff John and Samson Lee will hope to change the tighthead pecking order. Further down the line, towards 2027, Ospreys’ youngster Garyn Phillips is one who could emerge. Nailed on: Wyn Jones, Tomas Francis. Strong contenders: Nicky Smith, Gareth Thomas, Dillon Lewis, Leon Brown. Work to do: Samson Lee, WillGriff John, Rhodri Jones, Rob Evans, Rhys Carre, Corey Domachowski. Hookers (3) The big question here is whether Ken Owens can stretch out his Wales career for another two years. He’ll be 36 then, and his body has taken a fair old pounding over many seasons. At this point, he’s still a cut above the other Welsh No. 2s with his mental and physical toughness. But it’ll be a big achievement to make it to France. Ifan Phillips is showing promise, while Dewi Lake is another with big potential. At this stage, though, and going on Pivac’s selections to date, others are in front of them. Two for the future are Oliver Burrows and Efan Daniel, both of whom showed up well for Wales U20s this term, with Daniel’s effort

facebook.com/WalesOnline WCV1ST THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 CYNON VALLEY LEADER 39 The next World Cup will almost certainly come too soon for Christ Tshiunza, but he could be the bolter who comes to the party late Wales’ autumn clash with the All Blacks is sell-out WALES’ autumn clash against New Zealand has sold out. The clash with the All Blacks will be the first time the Principality Stadium will be able to host a capacity crowd and it’s now been confirmed that all available tickets have been purchased for the autumn curtainraiser on October 30th. There are still tickets available for Wales’ remaining autumn fixtures - with Wayne Pivac’s Six Nations champions taking on South Africa, Fiji and Australia throughout November. Read more: The nine massive Principality Stadium events now confirmed The clash with New Zealand outside of the Test window is something of a necessary evil in Welsh rugby - as its placement in the calendar means Pivac is without his English-based stars for the match. However, the guaranteed pull of the All Blacks - as demonstrated by this match already having sold out - is exactly why the Welsh Rugby Union feels the need to arrange an extra autumn international despite the fact that Wales will be weakened. “We have made half-price concessionary tickets for under 17s available across all categories for all four matches for the first time,” said a WRU ticket office spokesperson about the news. “This has appealed to a younger audience and more families as well as our normal event goers and rugby aficionados. “This will partly account for the high demand for tickets across all four matches, but we are incredibly pleased with the response from Welsh supporters. “Nobody knew what to expect after the year and a half we have all had, but we are delighted to be able to say that the appetite for Welsh rugby, and of course the All Blacks, is as strong as it has ever been. Pick your greatest Wales XV now “We are all looking forward to a month of celebration at Principality Stadium and we are ready to welcome supporters back safely and securely. “New challenges will be presented and we will follow Welsh Government and Public Health Wales advice closely ensuring all of the appropriate safety precautions are in place. “We will worry about these elements so supporters don’t have to and, of course, we have a full refund policy in place so fans can be safe in the knowledge that their money is safe if personal or national circumstances change due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.” The stadium will be operating staggered entry time. Tickets holders will be alerted to their required entry time and gate number on their ticket closer to game. Supporters who have successfully purchased tickets are encouraged to download the Principality Stadium ticketing app to be able to receive their digital tickets for the autumn fixtures. Aberdare duo among the medals in British Champs against Scotland more than a bit startling. Nailed on: None Strong contenders: Ken Owens, Elliot Dee, Ryan Elias, Sam Parry. Work to do: Ifan Phillips, Dewi Lake. Second rows (4) It’s the age issue once again, this time over the titan that is Alun Wyn Jones. After the last World Cup articles were written suggesting the 2021 Lions tour might be the big man’s swansong on the Test stage. But there was no obvious evidence of his powers waning during the three games against South Africa. He’ll be 38 during the next World Cup. Ordinarily, it’s not an age for global-tournament rugby players. There again, there is nothing ordinary about Jones. The loss of Jake Ball and Cory Hill weakens Wales’ second-row stocks heading for the big event in 2023, so Jones may decide to see if he can push through. Adam Beard appears a certainty after his efforts with the Lions. It’s probably too soon to expect Christ Tshiunza to force his way into the reckoning, with his first task being to settle in senior rugby, but the young giant, who figured at six for Wales in the recent U20s Six Nations, could be the kind of hybrid player coaches tend to enjoy having around. Let’s see how he progresses. Nailed on: Adam Beard. Strong contenders: Alun Wyn Jones, Will Rowlands, Ben Carter. Work to do: Rhys Davies, Morgan Jones, Matthew Screech, Seb Davies. Keep an eye on: Christ Tshiunza Back row (6) Five front-line candidates here, all of whom will be there or thereabouts to travel. Justin Tipuric will have just celebrated his 34th birthday when the tournament starts, so there will be some who see a question mark over him. But he has been playing as well as ever and, at this point, remains Wales’ premier openside by some distance. Taulupe Faletau and the versatile Josh Navidi look inked in, while the ultra-tough Ross Moriarty did his Wales prospects no harm under Pivac by fronting up impressively this summer. A player who could come through in the coming two seasons is Will Griffiths, able to play at lock and flanker, with a big lineout game and an appetite for hard graft. Nailed on: Josh Navidi, Taulupe Faletau. Strong contenders: Justin Tipuric, Ross Moriarty, Aaron Wainwright. Work to do: James Botham, Josh Macleod, Shane Lewis-Hughes, Ellis Jenkins, Taine Basham, Will Griffiths, Jac Morgan, Ollie Griffiths, James Davies, Ben Fry, Tommy Reffell. Keep an eye on: Morgan Morris. ABERDARE duo Mia Bernardo and Emily James struck gold at the Aerobic British Championships in Guildford. The talented Welsh pair, back competing across what were two action-packed days at Surrey Sports Park, were part of a fivestrong group who wowed in the senior group competition, winning with a score of 18.894. Along with Mia (Phoenix Dance & Gymnastics) and Emily (Bulmershe/Phoenix), the fantastic group also included Niamh Keane (Bulmershe) and Basingstoke pair Keleigh-Anne Blakey and Elizabeth Marais. It was also perfect preparation for later this month when the quintet will be taking on Europe’s best at the Aerobic European Championships. That event is being staged in Pesaro, Italy, from Sept 17th to 19th. In what is their first year in the senior ranks, 17-year-old Emily, who trains between Bulmershe in Reading and Phoenix in Aberdare and Mia, 18, from Phoenix, will become the first Welsh aerobic gymnasts to go to a European Championships since former senior women’s British champion Kayleigh Silver eight years ago. Meanwhile, it was also another memorable weekend in Surrey for Keane, who bagged gold in the senior individual women’s event to successfully retain her crown and make it a hat-trick of individual British titles – following on her triumphs in 2018 and 2019. The 2020 event was cancelled due to Covid-19. Some 189 gymnasts competed over the course of the two days last weekend in age groups ranging from 9-10 years all the way up to senior – and there was also success for the Aberdare-based Phoenix club in some of the other categories. There was silver for Foundation Trio (9-10yrs) Ffion Llewellyn, Lila Harris and Olivia Lacey with a score of 15.400, while NAC Trio (10-11yrs) Nia Owens, Niamh Reynolds and Seren Thomas took home gold with a score of 15.350. This year’s Aerobic Welsh Championships will be taking place over the weekend of November 6-7.

WCV1ST 2 CYNON VALLEY LEADER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 @WalesOnline TV Choice Back on the case THERE’S some good news and some bad news. The good is that Endeavour is back for its eighth run. The bad is that it contains only three episodes. Okay, so its predecessor only had the same amount too, but we’ve had to wait over a year and a half for the Inspector Morse prequel to return, so we were hoping for more. Shaun Evans, who plays the title character, will be going up against himself in the ratings – he has a key role in BBC1’s submarine drama Vigil, although it’s Endeavour that remains closest to his heart. He was thrilled to be back in Oxford for filming, both in front and behind the camera – Shaun continues his habit of the past few years of directing an episode, in this case the opener. “It was a relief to finally start filming,” says the actor. “It was great to be back. “We have all known each other such a long time, both the cast and the crew. So, it was good to get back and make sure everyone was OK.” The original Morse John Thaw Shaun Evans is back as Endeavour Morse once again. After last series’ heartbreaking climax, we find out what lies in store for the gifted young detective from the show’s stars We last saw Detective Sergeant Endeavour Morse cradling his dying lover Violetta in his arms after she took a bullet for him. And as the new series begins, it becomes apparent this event has taken its toll on the young officer. “This new series begins two months later and Morse is suffering,” says Shaun. “He is drinking too much, not coming into work, phoning in sick quite a bit. But a drink problem is only a manifestation of something else. It’s about not being able to cope with life on life’s terms.” While his loyal colleague Detective Inspector Fred Thursday tries to cover for him, it soon becomes clear that Morse’s behaviour is affecting his work. “Thursday is always defensive of Morse and perhaps tries to put to the back of his mind any concern, anxiety or worry about how he is,” explains Roger Allam, who plays his long-time partner. Set in 1971, this latest episode sees Endeavour investigating the death of a taxi driver on the outskirts of Oxford. Like the original show, Endeavour has reached 33 episodes. Does that mean it has come to the end of the road? “That’s a decision for the whole team,” explains Shaun. “We need to take a look at this series, see if there’s still a story to tell and if we all still want to tell it.” Fans of Colin Dexter’s character know lots happens to him between 1971 and when we met the John Thaw incarnation in the late-1980s. Shaun himself perhaps hints at whether we’ll get to see that: “I think we’ll know when the time has come to end Endeavour. facebook.com/WalesOnline WCV1ST THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 CYNON VALLEY LEADER 3 The Interview It’s a singer’s dream to be chosen to play Aretha Jennifer Hudson puts on a storming performance as singing legend Aretha Franklin in sensitive biopic Respect, directed by Liesl Tommy. GEORGIA HUMPHREYS hears more THERE was only one person Aretha Franklin wanted to portray her in a feature film of the singer’s life. Before her death in August 2018, the Queen of Soul was in touch with Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, who she handpicked for the leading role in what went on to become biographical drama Respect. “I miss hearing from her,” notes Chicago-born Jennifer, 39, who won the best supporting actress Oscar in 2006 for the musical Dreamgirls. “Aretha had a presence like no other. It was always so regal and royal. A very mellow and strong presence, but very quiet, in a way. “And so, I pulled from that, even while developing the character. And she’s funny as well. She was always so present. She would tell me what was going on in my life, and I’d be like, ‘How you know that?!”’ The poignant new film, directed by Liesl Tommy, follows Aretha’s rise from a child singing in her father’s church choir in Detroit to an international music icon. Known for hits such as Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman, and I Say A Little Prayer, her voice is arguably one of the most culturally significant of all time, with her songs becoming anthems of the civil rights movement, representing the resistance and resilience of black people. She continued to be an activist throughout her life, using her plat- Jennifer with director Liesl Tommy on the set of Respect form to advocate for social justice, equality, and women’s rights. Aretha has already been a huge part of Jennifer’s career so far. She performed her song Share Your Love With Me in her audition for American Idol – she was a finalist on the talent show in 2004 – and went on to secure a spot opening a show of hers in Indiana. When it came to vocal training for Respect, Jennifer had a helping hand from Welsh crooner Sir Tom Jones, who she starred alongside as a judge on the ITV singing contest The Voice UK. “We studied her instrument and my instrument, and we discovered that our instruments are built differently, but they can lend to the same things,” recalls Jennifer. “Her approach, like the place she sings from, she sings from the top of her head, he was saying. I said, ‘Where do I sing from?’ He was like, ‘Well, you sing from your feet’. I’d never thought about it, how I sing.” The star used various elements of Aretha’s technique “that is so familiar to us all, when we listen to her records, to help tell the story and to create my Aretha”. While it was “a singer’s dream” to Aretha Franklin performing in Detroit in 1987 be selected for the project, she certainly felt a huge amount of pressure while filming. “It’s like, ‘Oh wow, what am I supposed to do with this?’ How do you approach something so huge, of the magnitude that it is? And being a fan, I’m aware of that, which is what made it an even more personal project to me.” With so much story to tell about Aretha – who was married twice, and had four children – what was the over-arching thing that South African-American Liesl wanted to communicate through Respect? “Because we think of her as such a powerful classic diva, I was interested in showing how she became that way,” muses the film-maker. “And when I found out that she had almost a crippling shyness as a child, I was like, ‘How do we get Jennifer Hudson from that to what we understand about her now?’ So that was what was the driving force of me focusing it on her childhood and her 20s.” Even though Liesl knew Aretha was happy with the casting, there were other creative choices that had to be made with the singer no longer with us. The director admits she was always thinking whether Aretha would approve of the film, especially where it dips into some of the darker aspects of her life. “I never met her, I never spoke with her about it, I really took a lot of initiative,” she notes. “I pitched my idea of this film to the studio, and they brought me on to execute that vision. And I felt I am tired of seeing women being brutalised on screen Respect director Liesl Tommy Jennifer, left, and above as Aretha Franklin and Marlon Wayans as Ted White that, in order to understand her, we had to dip into some of the darker parts of her life, her childhood. “She was certainly an extremely reserved woman when it came to her private life, so there were definitely times when I thought, ‘Oh God, would she kill me? Would she literally scratch my eyes out if she saw what I was putting in this film?’ But at the same time, I felt that there were so many of her songs where she had that ache. “In addition to the great joy and triumph of some of her songs, there was also this beautiful, vulnerable ache, and I felt like part of my job was just to show all aspects of how she manifested her life in her music, in the film.” Aretha suffered a lot of trauma as a young woman; by the age of just 14, she had given birth to two children. Respect explores her relationship with first husband Ted White – who also worked as her manager, and was controlling – and includes distressing scenes of domestic violence. While wanting to be truthful to Aretha’s experience, Liesl was careful about what was depicted. “I definitely feel like as a woman, as a woman film-maker, the female gaze was very present for me because I am tired of seeing women being brutalised on screen, on television, and in film. We’ve seen it so many times. “So, for me, less important was the punch than the emotional fallout of the abuse. And so, every single step of the way, I was thinking, ‘How can I tell the story of these darker things without brutalising and dehumanising our lead, as well as brutalising the audience?’ “I feel like we’ve all seen too much, and I just wanted to stay focused on her emotional journey and not make it about somebody being beaten to a pulp. That’s just not what I wanted for the film. “Those images will live forever, and it was important to me, in that way, to protect us and her. “I do hope that we can have more conversations about what we’re doing to women’s bodies, and also to black people’s bodies. “The violence that we can carelessly and casually show is really something worth examining.” ■ Respect is in cinemas now

WCV1ST 4 CYNON VALLEY LEADER THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 @WalesOnline TV Highlights It’s really important people get angry about this ... there was a lot of injustice SCREENWRITER and playwright Jack Thorne has penned many poignant pieces of work. His list of credits is long, from co-writing on This Is England, to writing 2018 Channel 4 series Kiri, to his memorable adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials for the BBC. But his latest project, a two-hour drama for Channel 4 called Help, is a deeply personal one. Written by Jack and directed by Marc Munden, Help is set in a fictional Liverpool care home in spring 2020, and tells the moving story of the relationship between a young care home worker, Sarah (played by Jodie Comer) and a patient named Tony (played by Stephen Graham), a 47-year-old man with young-onset Alzheimer’s, both of whose lives are changed forever by the coronavirus pandemic. For Liverpudlian Jodie, 28, who has been catapulted into mega stardom following her Bafta and Emmy winning turn in Killing Eve, filming something in such close proximity to the event happening was, she reflects, “very surreal”. The actress, who also recently starred alongside Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds in the film Free Guy, said about making Help: “We started filming when we’d just gone into the third lockdown and, like you say, these events and experiences happened very, very recently. “There was a real energy on set that everyone was handling this with the utmost care and respect, Set in a fictional care home during the coronavirus pandemic, Help tells the moving story of the relationship between a young care home worker and a patient. Stars Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham reveal how they prepared for their challenging roles and it felt bigger than all of us – there was no ego on that set which was just so heartwarming. “Everyone wanted to give their best in telling a truthful and respectful story, so it was rewarding and quite sombre in many ways. We also got on very, very well, and there’s a lot of joy in this script. There are some beautiful, light moments.” A total of 42,855 care home residents in England and Wales have had Covid-19 recorded on their death certificate since the pandemic began, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics. In preparation for her role, Jodie spoke to care home workers, which she says was “invaluable” in informing the role. She explains: “I was just so LIGHT MOMENT: Tony and Sarah Sarah in her makeshift PPE in Help incredibly lucky that they were willing to jump on a Zoom with me and just say, ‘Look, nothing’s off limits, anything you want to ask, feel free’. “And it was so important for me to also capture what life was like for them before the pandemic, to really get a sense of what this little community is, which is essentially really like an extended family. “The biggest thing that I got from everybody who I spoke to was that there is no manual to being a care worker – nothing is black and white. It’s not residents and carers, they very much act on instinct and ‘If this was my mother, how would I want my mother to be treated?’ “Which I think you really see [with] Sarah, she gets faced with some very, very tough decisions, and she has to act in the moment, and she does what she thinks is best.” This Is England and Line of Duty star Stephen speaks passionately about his portrayal of Tony. According to the official Alzheimer’s website, young-onset dementia is when a “person develops dementia before the age of 65”. He says: “I watched Vicky McClure’s documentary about the choir, which I got a hell of a lot from because there’s a couple of people who are close to my age in that, who suffer from early-onset [dementia]. “So to be able to see somebody and how they were captured in real time was huge for me.” The script reflects the frustrations well-documented in the news as the pandemic surged through 2020 and beyond, including PPE (personal protective equipment) shortages for key workers. In the background of one scene, footage plays from a press conference held in May 2020, during which then-health secretary Matt Hancock said: “Right from the start we’ve tried to throw a protective ring around our care homes.” Jack says: “My mum was a carer, she worked in a residential home, and I saw the work she did, I saw how amazing the work was that she did. And that thing of minimum wage workers who were made to... no, they weren’t made to, they Help stars Jodie and Stephen on the red carpet Patrick Kielty PATRICK KIELTY: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF UNION Thursday, BBC1, regions vary In 1921, Ireland was portioned by the Westminster government and Northern Ireland was created. And there was a lot of injustice. “And it’s important that people come away realising that there’s more to the health sector than just the NHS – that it’s about care as well. That is just as important.” Asked if the project felt a very personal one, he says: “My mother was in a care home for 10 years with Alzheimer’s, and so I spent a To me, these people are heroes... Sarah is one woman, Tony is one man we’re trying to tell a story from, imagine how many other thousands of them are out there that went through similar experiences or an even worse experience? “So, for me, it was that trying to shine a light on the beauty of humanity through the storytelling of this story. When I was starting it, it was not going to be that, it was just a chance to go and work with our kid [Jodie] and see what we could do – and just the buzz of that and then work with Marc. “But then it developed into something which has moved me profoundly and it’s a piece that I am extremely proud to be a part of.” ■ Help is on Channel 4 on Thursday at 9pm The Graduate JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK 1 Thursday, Film 4, 9pm In this high-octane action sequel, Tom Cruise, left. reprises his role as the one-man army made famous in Lee Child’s best-selling books. I’m going to lose it on stage THE SCRIPT’S DANNY O’DONOGHUE TELLS MARION McMULLEN EMOTIONS WILL BE RUNNING HIGH AS THE BAND START TOURING AGAIN SINGER-SONGWRITER Danny O’Donoghue says he’s had enough of staring at the walls at home and is ready to do what he does best .... entertain people with music. The Script’s frontman says performing in arenas again will be “super-emotional and supercharged” as people start to come together again. “It feels like being let off the leash and going a bit crazy, but we all deserve it. Whatever makes you feel happy go and do it,” says the singer. “I’ve been at home like everyone else during lockdowns and the whole world has experienced this. “People have been really tested and the entire world has faced this challenge. Now we have the new normal.” Danny says people have suffered the loss of family, loved ones and friends and it feels like the best way to honour their memories going forward is to live life to the full and make the most of every moment. “The first lockdown felt like a bit of an extended holiday where you could have a barbecue and enjoy a few drinks at home,” he remembers, “but the second lockdown was extreme and there was a real mark moments and staples of their live show including Breakeven, their debut single We Cry, and Rain. The album will be followed by live performances in the UK and Ireland next year with Ella Henderson as special guest and two homecoming performances at Dublin’s 3Arena. It all celebrates a musical career that has included five UK number one albums, six billion streams, and more than two million ticket sales. He says greatest hits albums are getting rarer as a lot of bands now only survive for a few records before breaking up and are not around long enough to notch up enough bestselling tracks to bring out one. He says the band’s fans have also remained loyal over the years. “Like everyone I’ve missed being with family and friends and playing for our fans. I want to give them a great night. They have given me a life, a roof over my head and clothes on my back.” Danny spent lockdown with his girlfriend and says relationships that were fractured have broken during the last year while strong relationships have grown even stronger. “If you had a problem with yoursense of urgency. People were looking for answers. It was a crazy place to be.” He has also had to come to terms with losing his mother Ailish to a brain aneurysm on Valentine’s Day last year and poured his grief into the band’s last album Sunsets And Full Moons. Danny says martial arts and Thai boxing have also helped him get through a lot – “beating up the pads instead of beating up myself” – but says his beloved music industry has suffered badly. “We’ve lost so many professional people behind the scenes. They are doing other jobs like driving for Amazon and I really hope we can get them back.” Now he and fellow bandmates, Glen Power and Mark Sheehan, are counting down the days to when they can tour again with European dates starting this month. Danny laughingly says he will be word perfect by then when it comes to lyrics and says: “We’ve written a lot of songs about love and you sometimes go ‘which one is this’. It’s the second verses that can trip you up.” He says they also want to be positive for the future and bring that positivity to audiences. “The Tales From The Script album is a springboard to our next chapter, but it’s also our story so far,” says Danny. “We’re so excited to be taking it on the road. He samples the lyrics of The Beatles’ Michelle on first track Champagne Poetry, as if underlining how he belongs in A-list company, and talks about himself in the third person as he outlines his power and influence. There’s a vast array of producers and numerous guest appearances including Jay-Z and Lil Wayne. Drake is at the top of his game on tracks like Knife Talk, Fountains and No Friends In The Industry, but no-one is editing Drake at this stage of the game, and most of the time Certified Lover Boy is almost as good as he thinks it is. BACK IN LOVE CITY The Vaccines ★★★★✩ After a shaky third album and the departure of drummer and founding member Pete Robertson, the indie rockers have settled into a new creative groove. Combat Sports in 2018 saw them deliver a solid suite of inventive garage rock and now, after a two-year delay due to the pandemic, they are releasing Back In Love City. Their most wide-ranging album yet, it encompasses spaghetti western drama (Paranormal Romance), stomping glam rock (the title track) and dreamy FM rock (El Paso). They’ve managed to capture a new inventive spirit. GROUND CONTROL Rudimental ★★★✩✩ The British drum and bass quartet’s fourth studio album is packed with energetic tracks which will keep the dancefloor full. It opens with the catchy and familiar 2020 release Come Over, and Hardy Caprio joins the band for an atmospheric version of their 2019 hit Ghost. Ground Control largely sticks to Rudimental’s successful formula of mixing dance beats with emotional lyrics while keeping things fresh with plenty of guest artists bringing their own flavour. A great party album to keep people moving.

facebook.com/WalesOnline WCV1ST THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2021 CYNON VALLEY LEADER 7 Game On Classic Space Invaders fans are in for a treat with this completist’s collection Blasts from the past CHERYL MULLIN End Of Level Boss Space Invaders Invincible Collection (PEGI 3) Switch ★★★✩✩ IT’S a pop icon credited with helping move video games from a novelty into a global industry. And Switch owners can now get their hands on the most comprehensive collection ever released. Space Invaders set the template for the shoot ‘em up genre when it was released way back in 1978. Developed by Tomohiro Nishikado, its simple yet highly addictive gameplay captured the imagination of people across the globe, going on to inspire designers of the future to create some of the best known games we enjoy today. Over the decades there have been dozens of different takes on the game in an attempt to ‘freshen’ it up for different generations, ported and re-released onto just about every console you can think of. And now the Space Invaders Invincible Collection brings most of those games together. Featuring all titles from the Japanese standard and special releases, this limited Western collection even has the console port of Arkanoid vs. Space Invaders, a unique title previously only available as a download code with the Japanese release. This collection boasts 11 different versions of the game, although some are a lot more similar than others. For example there’s a black and white, and a colour version of the 1978 classic arcade version, and 1979’s Space Invaders Part II which, apart from a few tweaks here and there, is essentially the same game. Space Invaders DX Space Invaders Extreme Space Invaders Part IV Arkanoid Vs Space Invaders But where this collection comes to life is Super Space Invaders 91, and Space Invaders Extreme. The first brought a new look and fresh ideas to the series with changing backgrounds, new graphics and special attacks. The latter was originally released to mark the game’s 30th anniversary in 2008, but this is the revamped version of Extreme which was issued on Steam in 2018. Space Invaders Extreme adds another frantic layer onto the action. Not only do the invaders behave differently, some also have abilities now, such as shielding to reflect shots back at you, or dividing when you hit them. Different enemies drop selected power ups, like bombs, and chain – which alters how your cannon fires. And those chain power ups come in very handy for boss battles, which require precision and timing to win. Add to this the souped-up music, and graphics and it feels like a solid, arcade experience – one that builds up your stress level, as you fight not to get wiped out. The 1994 release, Space Invaders DX, introduced co-op to the series, although essentially it FIRE AWAY: Space Invaders Gigamax 4 SE doesn’t offer much more than the original. Where it does shine though, is with its ‘parody’ modes, that replace the original characters with those from other Taito franchises, including New Zealand Story, Bubble Bobble, Darius and Arkanoid. And speaking of Arkanoid, if you buy this collection, you get a code to download 2017’s Arkanoid vs Space Invaders. Originally released on mobiles, it fuses the games’ classic blockbreaker and fixed shooter fun. Bouncing the little platform up and down across the screen, you collect and rebound enemy fire to clear the invaders from the top of the screen. It’s quick paced and quite challenging, the mixed titles doubling the addictive nature of the gameplay. I’m not going to lie, the asking price for this collection is eyewateringly steep, at £51.99 for a physical copy of the game, and £54.99 for a download. And while you get hours and hours of gameplay for your money, some of the versions feel very samey, very quickly. For a Space Invaders fan, what you have here is just about the most comprehensive collection of games I can ever remember, and for that alone, the price is worth it. But for the casual player, it will be just too much to ask.
