Lincoln and Liberty: Wisdom for the Ages
Since Abraham Lincoln's death, generations of Americans have studied his life, presidency, and leadership, often remaking him into a figure suited to the needs and interests of their own time. Some of the essays are terrific; others are really bad. Justice Thomas’ introduction and the last essay about Lincoln’s true legacy (arguing that TR and Wilson, to support their progressive, anti-Constitution, big government agenda, adopted a most inaccurate view of AL) make the book nevertheless very worthwhile. George Will’s recent book Conservative Sensibility seems in line with AL’s understanding of the Declaration and the Constitution.
