About Liberty Mutual Car Insurance

Liberty Mutual opened its doors in 1912 as a workers compensation insurance company. In 1918, Liberty Mutual started offering auto insurance and continued to expand its product and service offerings. In an effort to boost highway safety, Liberty Mutual partnered with Cornell in 1957 to create a “safety car.”

Headquartered in Boston, Liberty Mutual provides insurance in 29 countries worldwide. Liberty Mutual acquired Safeco Insurance in 2008. In 2022, it added Safe Auto Group to its family of insurance companies.

Liberty Mutual car insurance is available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

Liberty Mutual Car Insurance

Like other car insurance companies, Liberty Mutual provides the following foundational types of auto insurance:

Liability Car Insurance

This pays for injuries and property damage you accidentally cause to others in a car accident. Liability car insurance also covers legal fees and court judgments or settlements if you’re sued because of a car accident.

Comprehensive Insurance

Comprehensive insurance pays to repair or replace your vehicle if it’s stolen or damaged by fire, vandalism, floods, hail and other severe weather, falling objects or striking an animal. The maximum payout for comprehensive insurance is the actual cash value of your car if it’s totaled, minus your deductible.

Collision Insurance

Collision insurance pays to fix or replace your car if it’s damaged in a car accident or a collision with another object, such as a fence or tree. Collision insurance pays regardless of fault. The maximum payout of collision insurance is the actual cash value of your car if it’s totaled, minus your deductible.

Collision and comprehensive insurance are optional and usually sold together. If you have a car loan or lease, your lender or leasing company will likely require you to buy these coverage types.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured motorist coverage (UM) helps pay for you and your passengers’ medical expenses and for damage to your car if an uninsured driver crashes into you. UM is required in some states and optional in others (you can reject coverage in writing). Underinsured motorist coverage helps pay for you and your passengers’ medical expenses and for damage to your car if a driver who has insufficient liability car insurance crashes into you.

Medical Payments Insurance (MedPay)

Medical payments coverage pays for necessary medical expenses for you and your passengers injured in an auto accident, regardless of fault. It is typically sold in small amounts ($1,000 to $5,000). This coverage is also known as MedPay and not available in all states.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Personal injury protection insurance (PIP) pays you and your passengers’ medical bills when injured in an auto accident, regardless of fault. PIP also pays lost wages and includes replacement services if you cannot carry out regular household tasks such as cleaning.

PIP is required in 15 states, optional in four states and Washington D.C., and unavailable in other states.

Other Liberty Mutual Car Insurance Coverage

Lifetime Repair Guarantee

A lifetime repair guarantee comes standard with a Liberty Mutual car insurance policy. Car repairs from an accident or incident covered by your policy are guaranteed for as long as you own the car if you use a Liberty Mutual repair network shop to fix your car. Other perks include Liberty Mutual paying the shop directly for the repairs and your ability to track the progress of repairs on Liberty Mutual’s app.

Original Parts Replacement

Original parts replacement coverage allows you to replace damaged components with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts for an incident covered by your collision coverage or comprehensive coverage. If OEM parts are not available or no longer in production, Liberty Mutual car insurance will pay for comparable or reconditioned parts.

Rental Car Reimbursement

If your car is in the shop for repairs due to an accident or other problem covered by your car insurance policy, rental reimbursement coverage pays for your rental car.

Coverage varies by state and comes with daily limits. If you use an approved repair shop and let Liberty Mutual arrange the rental car, the coverage will pay for it until repairs are complete. Otherwise, you may be limited on how long you can keep the rental car.

Roadside Assistance

Liberty Mutual’s 24-hour optional roadside assistance coverage can help if your car is disabled. Also referred to as towing & labor coverage, this pays for: towing to a repair facility, battery jump starts, flat tire changes, emergency fuel delivery and help with unlocking doors.

Liberty Mutual Customized Car Insurance for Teachers

Liberty Mutual offers specialized auto insurance for teachers. Options and availability vary by state but can include:

  • Collision coverage deductible lowered to $0 if your car is damaged in a collision when driving on school business. The deductible is only reduced to $100 in Pennsylvania.
  • Vandalism loss protection lowers your comprehensive coverage deductible to $0 if your car is vandalized on school property or at school-related events. The deductible is only reduced to $100 in Pennsylvania.
  • Personal property coverage of up to $2,500 for teaching materials or school-owned property damaged in or stolen from your vehicle.

Auto Insurance Complaints Against Liberty Mutual

Liberty Mutual’s level of complaints about auto insurance is above the industry average. Car insurance complaints tend to be about unsatisfactory claim settlements, claim delays and the handling of claims by adjusters.

What Does Liberty Mutual Car Insurance Cover?

Liberty Mutual car insurance offers various coverage features you can choose to add on to broaden your coverage:

Does Liberty Mutual Offer Accident Forgiveness?

Yes, Liberty Mutual offers optional accident forgiveness coverage, which keeps your rates from going up after your first accident. You must be accident-free and violation-free for the last five years to qualify for Liberty Mutual’s accident forgiveness coverage.

Does Liberty Mutual Offer a Diminishing Deductible?

Yes, Liberty Mutual offers a diminishing deductible through its deductible fund. Your car insurance deductible is the amount subtracted from your claims check when you make a collision or comprehensive insurance claim. The deductible fund lets drivers reduce their deductible amount by $100 each year.

If you participate in the deductible fund, you’ll pay $30 annually, and in return, Liberty Mutual will lower your deductible by $100 each year. If you make a claim, your deductible is decreased by the balance in your deductible fund.

For example, say you have a $500 deductible and have an accident after taking part in the deductible fund for three years. Your deductible is reduced to $200 as your deductible fund covers the remaining $300.

Does Liberty Mutual Offer Gap insurance?

If you lease or finance your car, Liberty Mutual offers gap insurance. If your car is totaled or stolen, gap insurance pays the difference between your car’s value and the loan or lease amount you still owe.

Does Liberty Mutual Offer New Car Replacement?

Liberty Mutual offers new car replacement coverage for drivers who purchase a new car. If your car is totaled or stolen during the first year you own it or before you log 15,000 miles, this coverage provides money to buy a new car of the same make and model. Without new car replacement, you would be paid an amount equal to the value of your vehicle right before the accident, minus your deductible.

If your car is one year or older, you can purchase “better car replacement” coverage. This benefit pays you enough money to replace your totaled car with a car that is one model year newer and with 15,000 fewer miles.

Does Liberty Mutual Offer Usage-Based Auto Insurance?

Drivers who practice good driving habits may save from 10% to 30% off their car insurance by participating in Liberty Mutual’s RightTrack usage-based insurance program.

RightTrack monitors driving practices, such as braking, nighttime driving, acceleration and mileage for a 90-day review period. You need to drive more than 125 miles during your review period for enough data to be collected for your final discount. You receive an initial discount, typically 10%, just for signing up. Be aware if your final discount is less than your original discount, you’ll get a bill for the difference.

New York drivers have to plug in a device for RightTrack to monitor their driving. RightTrack utilizes a smartphone app in other states. RightTrack availability varies by state.

Does Liberty Mutual Car Insurance Offer Rideshare Insurance?

Liberty Mutual works with Lyft and Uber to provide rideshare insurance in certain states.

Uber chose Liberty Mutual to provide insurance coverage for Uber drivers in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Vermont. Liberty Mutual was selected by Lyft to provide insurance coverage for drivers using the Lyft rideshare platform in the following states: Arizona, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas and Utah.

Liberty Mutual provides car insurance coverage from the time ridesharing drivers open the app and are waiting for a trip request to the completion of the trip.
