A couple of prison tales.
Seven years before Leo appeared as a prisoner in this movie (Riot In Cell Block 11) he was a real inmate at San Quentin. It was a dangerous, brutal, sad, and depressing place to be.
One of the things that ground on him the most was the noise.

For four years he never experienced a quiet moment, ever. Banging, clanking, screaming, crying, bell ringing, pissing, moaning, groaning, jangling, Day and night. On and on.
One night, a noise drowned out all others. Someone blasted a fart so loud and long it seemed to shake the entire cell block. A moment later, a voice called out, "Sing out sweet lips!"
Laughter swept through the cells. Even the guards lost it.

You know the first thing that brought Leo joy when he was released? The smell of perfume. He took the train from Q to Los Angeles. He walked into a bar/restaurant at Union Station and there were women, wearing cotton print dresses and stylish hats. The smell of their perfume was so intoxicating he couldn’t stop smiling. Everything smells bad in prison.

So, have a good laugh, appreciate lovely fragrances, and stay out of the joint!
