Lenovo Yoga 9 2-in-1 14IMH9 review: Smaller and lighter with faster Arc graphics

Grainy OLED? The Yoga 9 2-in-1 G9 improves upon several aspects of the Yoga 9 2-in-1 G8, but some core drawbacks remain including the unfortunate moire effect that makes the OLED display slightly grainier than most other OLED laptops.

Not to be confused with the Yoga Slim 7 14IMH9, the Yoga 9 2-in-1 14IMH9 is the direct successor to the Yoga 9 2-in-1 14IRP8. It carries new changes to the external design alongside a Meteor Lake CPU to replace the Raptor Lake options on last year's model. The Yoga 9 series is home to Lenovo's highest-end laptops for general consumers in contrast to the more affordable Yoga 7 series or IdeaPad series.

Our unit in review comes configured with 16 GB of LPDDR5x-7467 RAM and a 2.8K (2880 1800) 120 Hz OLED touchscreen for approximately $1550. Pricier SKUs can be found with double the RAM and a 4K (3840 x 2400) 60 Hz OLED touchscreen instead, but all options at the moment come with the same Core Ultra 7 155H CPU and integrated Arc 8 graphics.

Alternatives to the Yoga 9 2-in-1 14IMH9 include other flagship subnotebooks like the HP Spectre x360 14, LG Gram 14 2-in-1, or the Asus ZenBook 14 Flip.

Case — Thinner Bezels All-Around

The CNC aluminum chassis has returned but with several adjustments. Most notably, the lid is now smaller around the sides and bottom for slightly narrower bezels. When closed, the size difference between the base and lid becomes apparent as the base appears wider and rounder as shown by the images below. This is in contrast to most other laptops where the lid and base are flush along their edges when in the closed position.

The next physical change relates to the top edge along the webcam which now protrudes more than before. This thicker section of the top bezel has allowed for a more advanced 5 MP webcam compared to the 2 MP webcam on last year's design. It also makes the lid easier to grip and open especially when compared to the HP Spectre x360 14 design.

Length and width are smaller than before leading to decreased weight and increased portability. Most notably, the model is about 200 g lighter than the competing Spectre x360 14 which makes a bigger difference than one might expect considering the 2-in-1 form factor.

Connectivity

All ports from the 2023 design have made the transition to the 2024 iteration including the dual Thunderbolt 4 ports. The system notably integrates more USB-C ports than competitors like the ZenBook 14 or Inspiron 14 Plus 7440. However, there is no HDMI port or SD card slot in return.

Webcam

The new 5 MP webcam certainly produces sharper images than the 2 MP sensor on the older model. Even so, colors haven't improved and it's still a bit behind the 9 MP sensors on the latest HP laptops.

Maintenance

The bottom panel is secured by just four Torx screws. Even so, servicing is unfortunately more difficult than it looks because the panel is very tightly latched to the base along the edges. Attempting to reinstall the panel is subsequently more irritating than it needs to be for the same reason. We encountered this same issue on last year's design as well.

RAM and WLAN remain soldered. Storage, however, is now limited to 42 mm NVMe SSDs whereas last year's design could support up to 80 mm drives as shown by the comparison images below.

Accessories And Warranty

The retail box includes a fabric carrying sleeve and the Lenovo Slim Pen to accompany the paperwork and AC adapter. Unfortunately, the pen is terribly unergonomic as it's too small to grip comfortably while its integrated buttons are too spongy when pressed. Small pen sizes were more understandable for older Yoga models that had integrated pen garages, but there's no excuse to not ship with larger and higher quality styluses now that the pen no longer sits inside the Yoga chassis. The Microsoft Surface Pen, for example, is thicker and easier to hold than the Lenovo Slim Pen.

The standard one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies when purchased in the US.

Input Devices — Larger Auxiliary Keys

Keyboard

Lenovo is doubling down on the column of auxiliary keys along the right edge of the keyboard which we had mixed feelings about on last year's design. These keys are now larger and with different functions than before including a new user-defined key for added customization. Nonetheless, it's still easy to hit one of these keys by accident as they are positioned where the Backspace, Enter, and arrow keys normally are on most other laptops.

The main QWERTY keys are otherwise unchanged in terms of tactility and feedback for a similar typing experience as the 2022 Yoga 9i 14. Feedback is firm but shallow while the Space key is noticeably louder than the rest of the keyboard.

Touchpad

Clickpad size has increased to 13.5 x 8 cm to be very spacious for a 14-inch form factor. The clickpad on the Inspiron 14 Plus 7440, for example, is "only" 11.5 x 8 cm in comparison. Traction is very smooth with almost no sticking even when gliding at slower speeds. Clicking is also firm and with stronger feedback than on most other subnotebooks for a more satisfying feel. The sharp "click" can be a bit loud, but we don't find that to be an issue.

The display refresh rate is now 120 Hz up from 90 Hz on last year's model. Otherwise, everything else appears to be the same including the full P3 colors, 1800p resolution, and OLED panel.  It would have been great to see support for Windows variable refresh rate to better differentiate the Yoga 9 2-in-1 14 from alternatives like the Spectre x360 14 or ZenBook 14 which also come with 1800p120 OLED displays.

HDR500 is supported. We're able to record a maximum brightness of 567 nits when playing HDR content compared to 372 nits if on SDR mode. As usual, HDR mode is disabled if running on battery power.

Unfortunately, the display suffers from the same moire effect as on last year's model meaning that the display appears grainy despite the glossy overlay and high pixel density. It's not severe enough to be distracting, but the graininess is nonetheless noticeable when placed side-by-side with another OLED laptop like the Asus ZenBook 14. If you want the "crispest" OLED experience, then you'll have to look beyond the Yoga 9 2-in-1 14.

Note that the display is set to 60 Hz by default and so users will need to manually enable 120 Hz mode through Windows.

The display is decently calibrated out of the box against the P3 standard with average grayscale and color deltaE values of just 2.2 and 4.91, respectively. Calibrating the panel ourselves would improve colors while grayscale and color temperature remain the same. Our calibrated ICM profile is available to download above for free.

Display Response Times

Display response times show how fast the screen is able to change from one color to the next. Slow response times can lead to afterimages and can cause moving objects to appear blurry (ghosting). Gamers of fast-paced 3D titles should pay special attention to fast response times.

Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

The frequency of 240.5 Hz is relatively low, so sensitive users will likely notice flickering and experience eyestrain at the stated brightness setting and below.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 17903 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 3846000) Hz was measured.

Pulse-width modulation is present on all brightness levels at a steady frequency of 240 Hz. This can potentially cause headaches to users who are sensitive to flickering.

Outdoor visibility has not improved from the previous generation and so it remains average relative to other 14-inch subnotebooks. Glare is essentially unavoidable due to the glossy screen, but colors are preserved a bit better than most IPS options due to the OLED panel.

Jumping from the Core i7-1360P on last year's model to this year's Core Ultra 7 155H will provide a 20 percent boost in multi-thread performance while single-thread performance remains flat. However, multi-thread performance would drop by roughly 20 percent after just two runs of CineBench R15 which was something we observed on last year's Yoga 9 14IRP8 as well.

The Ryzen 7 8845HS is a close competitor to the Core Ultra 7 155H and both feature integrated NPUs to accelerate AI tasks as well. However, local NPU acceleration is still in its infancy with very few applications as of this writing.

Running Prime95 would cause the CPU to spike to 3.1 GHz and 66 W for a few seconds or until reaching a core temperature of 105 C. Thereafter, clock rates and board power draw would fall and stabilize at 2.4 GHz and 39 W, respectively, in order to maintain a more reasonable core temperature of 80 C. The limited Turbo Boost potential is common on ultra-thin laptops and the behavior matches our CineBench R15 xT observations above. Repeating this test on the Inspiron 14 Plus 7440 would cause the CPU to stabilize at slightly higher clock rates (~2.7 GHz) and board power draw (44 W) but at a much warmer core temperature of 100 C.  

Repeating the above test on Balanced mode would result in lower numbers across the board as shown by the screenshot below. CPU Clock rate, temperature, and board power draw would fall to just 1.6 GHz, 71 C, and 25 W, respectively.

GPU clock rate and temperature when running Witcher 3 to represent typical gaming loads would be around 2.0 GHz and 74 C, respectively, compared to 1.8 to 2.3 GHz on the aforementioned Dell system.

System Performance

PCMark scores are notably higher than many competing models with the same Core Ultra 7 CPU. This can be partly attributed to the faster-than-average 7467 MHz RAM which impacts iGPU performance. System RAM in the Inspiron 14 Plus 7440, for example, is slightly slower at 6400 MHz.

DPC Latency

LatencyMon shows minor DPC issues when opening multiple browser tabs of our homepage. 4K video playback would also exhibit minor frame skips during a one-minute test video. They're not enough to be noticeable, but no frame skips at all should be ideal especially for a system running on a Core Ultra 7 CPU.

Storage Devices

Our test unit ships with the midrange Samsung MZAL81T0HDLB PCIe4 x4 NVMe SSD. Transfer rates of 6200 MB/s are sustainable to be slightly slower than the SK Hynix drive on last year's model. At least performance throttling is a non-issue which is not usually the case for smaller 42 mm drives.

As mentioned above, the new Yoga 9 14 G9 does not support full-length 2280 NVMe SSDs unlike on the vast majority of laptops in the market.
