Ahead Of Its Time
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 3, 2011
If ever a movie could be described as being ahead of its time, `Soylent Green' is surely one. This is the oldest move in which I heard the term `global warming' referenced.
It's the future. And it's grim. Charlton Heston plays a cop with that slightly cynical, oleaginous style that he sometimes adopts. It's perfectly suited. Abusing his powers, he loots crime scenes more readily than he investigates them. He's not bad; he does his job well. But he's world-weary, comparatively poor, and if he didn't others would. He has an ageing assistant in the form of Edward G Robinson. This man is his `book'. They share a grubby, sparce apartment. The book's job is to work as secretary, records clerk and general dog's-body. But at least they have jobs, wages and a home. Many haven't.
The plot is rather thin and some of the set-pieces are a tad spartan. However; this movie excels in the great sparring relationship between the two old Hollywood pros, which has a very natural touch. Added to which are a host of insightful details about environmental degradation and scarcity of resources, which 30 years on, have an alarmingly familiar theme.
Some bigwig is murdered. Heston's man must investigate. The ultimate discovery was quite shocking in its day, yet hardly seems out of keeping with the state of the world as depicted. After all; without `Soylent Green', the only alternative for many would be - starvation...
As I suggest; the movie is showing its age. It has a very 70's feel in one or two technical areas, but there is still sufficient quality and nicely realised detailing to provide both a harrowing watch with good entertainment.
The DVD supplied by Amazon is both clear visually and aurally. Viewer rating is `15', aspect ratio is 2.4:1, 93min run-time. There are various extras which I haven't watched. Well worth a punt.

Immensely relevent and brilliant but slightly dated technically.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 12, 2020
Considering that this film is set in the year 2022 it is scarily accurate; or perhaps will be in 10 years time. Initially based on the premise of overpopulation but when you see and hear the plot unfolding you see how close to reality this film is now becoming. Ignoring the rather dated technology (heck they didn't even have mobile phones when this was made) notice how the characters are forced to live, how the big corporations run everything and most importantly, how the rich fence themselves off from the poor struggling masses. There is one all too brief scene set in a 'tree museum' where the casual indifference to nature is thrown into sharp relief. The main character is a cop trying to get answers to a mafia style killing of acompany executive. The man has been executed to prevent him from revealng the truth about Soylent Green; which we eventually discover is made from humans (the ultimate in recycling). Consequently this film is probably more relevent today than it was when it was released (1972) and even the chilling resolution to rioters and protesters rings true today. At the end Charlton Heston screams "Soylent Green is people" but nowadays a more telling ending would be to shout "its too late, we're all doomed"
