Viscontea Tower is one of the old rests of the fortified village and it is still visible in Lecco. Walk in Lecco downtown and discover it!

Walking around Lecco’s center you discover Torre Viscontea (Viscontea Tower) in Piazza XX Settembre. It’s the visible trace of the old castle of Lecco, built in the fourteenth-century by will of Azzone Visconti, who wanted Lecco to be a fortified village. The Castle and the city walls of Lecco were kept intact until 1782 when the Austrian Emperor Giuseppe II decided to demolished them.

The tower has been restored in 1816 by the architect Giuseppe Bovara and then used as a prison, later in 1932 it was given to the City of Lecco and became a Museum.

Nowadays the Torre Viscontea hosts temporary exhibition of local artists. Downstairs at the entrance you see some stone cannon balls.
