"You put yourselves in a position of competition by saying that there is only one prize."

One of those books that's going to be categorized as either 'you love it or hate it'. For me, books like these are like a calming meditation. But if you didn't like books like Think and Grow Rich, or Secret, this is definitely not the book for you.

I personally liked the guidance the author had provided here in changing one's perspective/ mindset or 'point of attraction,' and using it to control your thinking patterns. At the end of the day, if for nothing else, you'd be more relaxed by the outlined exercises.

"The trouble with most relationships is that you pick out the one little thing that you do not like and then give that most of your attention."

This book literally changed my life. The first part was a little "airy-fariy" to me but after getting into the bulk of the book, you learn how to re-think of what you want to attract into your life. Thoughts are powerful and just as easily as you can attract prosperity, happiness, and love, you can attract just the opposite into you life as well.

It's not a book that just tells you to think "happy thoughts" and all will be well, it goes deeper than that, and I go back and read sections of it over and over again when I feel as if I may be taking a downward spiral.

I would recommend it to anyone.

EDIT, January, 2014:

Today, I stumbled on this: http://www.yourtango.com/2014203359/l...

The writer, Ms. Trespicio, goes a lot farther condemning the book than I did or should have and she makes it clear that if you want something in life, you have to DO something to get it. Or to get rid of it as the case may be. True, actions start with thoughts and I think that's where I should have been more clear in my prior write-up.

So, a couple of things of note:

- Reducing my rating for the book from three stars to one. The book should have addressed the DO part of life as well but the writers are more interested in a magical world/universe view and they overlook the action part of "getting what you want in life."

- The mentor who first recommended this book to me had done a lot of good for me in other areas. Our lives have since diverged and we are no longer in touch. It wasn't because of this book, per se. Nevertheless, I'm glad I don't have to feel like I have to rebut this with him or discuss similar things.

- Regardless of what you read, sift it. There are assertions in nearly every tome which are good and others which are not so worthwhile. Stay critical, my friends.

--Wag--

Originally written February, 2008.

I only read this book at the suggestion of a mentor. When I went and picked it up, I didn't read the back cover of it, or the subtitles or anything else, so when I got home and saw the reference to "Abraham" on the front cover, I was very skeptical about it. I didn't want to get sucked into a book of a religious bent.

Turns out, it was even weirder than that. Don't stop here, though. Read on!

The book was good at reminding you that your mind is extremely powerful. What you think about is pretty much what you'll have in your life. Go read Napoleon Hill's, "Think and Grow Rich," along with James Allen's, "As a Man Thinketh," among others, of course. Short and sweet of it is, if you think positively, positive things will happen to you. What the book doesn't tell you is that when negative things happen to you, your positive attitude can turn those things into far less tragic events. Other books will make this more clear.

Also, the book goes too far in suggesting that EVERYTHING that happens to you is a result of the power of your own mind. For example, if you had been thinking positively, you wouldn't have been whacked by that crazy driver who just rear-ended you! Or that tornado would have wiped out your neighbor's house and left yours alone if you had only just been positively attuned to the universe. To that kind of thing, I cry, "Baloney!" Life does have elements beyond even our powerful minds to control.

"Attraction," posits the position that if only everyone in the world were to think properly, we'd be in a Utopia! Of course, life would be better, no doubt, but there are things which are still beyond our power.

I do believe that the mind has great power. I do believe we are all connected in unexplainable ways. I do not believe that there are mystical beings collectively called, "Abraham," who can commune through a woman who is in a trance!

Nevertheless, the book has good stuff in there too, along with the crap.

The mind is capable of a lot, including how your body lives, how you present yourself to other people, etc. When you have a positive train of thought, you will have better health, better prosperity and better life in general. That simply is true and cannot be denied.

Do you ever see people who are always having horrible tragedy all the time? It's because their thoughts are out of whack with what they really want. They have worse health, worse relationships, they seem to attract all kinds of negativity in their lives and simply cannot seem to get out of the rut. Some of these people are very nice people, too. They just have a victim mentality and sure 'nuff, they become victims to a life that steamrollers them into the ground. Unnecessarily, I must add.

Worst of all, they never seem to be able to get themselves out of that rut of constant negativity. Until they succeed at changing their thought processes, they will continually have these kinds of problems.

The value of this book is in promoting the idea that you have more control over your life than you think. Be careful of the mysticism, though. I would like nothing better than to have the weather in my locale be 100% ideal all the time but you know what? It ain't gonna happen! I will, however, be able to have have good relationships with my friends and neighbors should I choose to do so. Assuming they are of like mind, of course.

I do recommend this book. However, I also suggest you read it with a critical eye to the good things which are here and selectively dismiss the baloney!

There’s something to be said about reading the right book at the right time. The Law of Attraction: The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham isn’t a book I’d heard of or would typically be drawn to reading but was recommended by a trusted friend.

In the simplest terms, the LOA is about training your mind to focus on the things you want. If you think about what you don’t want, you’re still inviting those possibilities into your realm.

“It is of great value for you to give your conscious attention to what you specifically want, otherwise you can be swept up by the influence of that which surrounds you. You are bombarded by the stimulation of thought ... unless you are setting forth the thought that is important to you, you can be stimulated by another’s thoughts that may or not be important to you.”

Clarifying your intentions, deliberately thinking, prioritizing joy, and segment intending (consciously identifying when you’re entering a new segment of your day and addressing what you hope to get from it) are all concepts described in the book. ⁣

I agree with these ideas but also recognize more often than not, a commitment to hard work is required to fulfill these desires. There isn’t a lot of acknowledgement given to this aspect in The Law of Attraction, but I still found it worth reading.

This book is written in the dialectic style of Socrates. From the peaceful slumber of a meditative state, Esther becomes in touch with (I dare say possessed by) the numinous figure of Abraham, the shepherd of her soul. Her husband Jerry is ecstatic. He uses his possessed wife as a channel through which Abraham shall answer the riddles of the universe. Quite the arrangement for a book about the main tenet of New Thought philosophy: the Law of Attraction.

The Socratic method presupposes an argument. Jerry asks questions, and Abraham posits his three undisputed Universal Laws.

The Law of Attraction
The Science of Deliberate Creation
The Art of Allowing

Here's a summary:

You attract the essence of what you're thinking and feeling. If you think positive, you attract positive. If you think negative, you attract negative. If you think a lot about something, you are bound to have/achieve that something. Every circumstance in your life you invite through your thoughts—even people. Those with similar vibrations (thoughts, feelings, interests, ambitions, etc.) attract one another.

"To better understand the Law of Attraction, see yourself as a magnet attracting unto you the essence of that which you are thinking and feeling. And so, if you are feeling fat, you cannot attract thin. If you feel poor, you cannot attract prosperity, and so on. It defies Law."

"The second Law, the Science of Deliberate Creation, says: That which I give thought to and that which I believe or expect—is. In short, you get what you are thinking about, whether you want it or not."

One of the things I liked about this book is the dialogic style. The conversation between Jerry and Abraham sweeps the reader off into a philosophic storyline that has a distancing effect. In other words, what Jerry and Esther preach is framed within their discussion with Abraham. This style has two setbacks though. One, many times I became bored because a lot of information is unduly repeated. Two, dialogue diction inhibits the use of colorful literary language.

Anyway, for me, the Law of Attraction belongs to the tried-and-true category. Reading this book was a way to reiterate what I already know about this Law—that it works, and that the best way to go about utilizing it is through daily meditation and affirmation and visualization.

The fact that this book ended up in my hands it a testament to the law of attraction. I was wanting a source that out lined the major laws of the universe. From what I understand there are only a few. All the other laws are overtones and sub-harmonics to these three, the trilogy. As to the source of this information, it comes from a group of individuals who exist at a slightly higher vibrational rate. This group collectively calls itself Abraham. One of the Co authors (Esther Hicks) goes into a slight trance (ah la Seth) and acts as a portal for this information to come through.

The book's purpose is to explain The 3 main laws of the Universe. They are the Law of attraction, the Law of deliberate creation, and the Law of allowing. From what the book states, these Laws apply to all beings that exist. Whatever they look like, and whatever plane of nature they find themselves on. If I'm to understand the ideals expressed, these Laws also apply to what we call God. The God that created the known Universe gets back its creative expression, based on these 3 Laws, because it was these Laws that it used to bring itself into existence.

There are sections in the text that talk about your personal guidance system, and that is quite simply your emotions. When you feel any negative emotion that means you are out of alignment with your larger self (Soul). When you feel positive emotions it means you are inline with your true self. This is what is meant when Jesus said, I and my father are one. The alignment, a sense of well being, feeling groovy, one with the flow, good health, and the host of other euphemisms that convey the concept that describes this union.

Every page of this book brought a wealth of knowledge to my being. I found myself sneaking back to the book just to re-experience the high of what each page had to offer. The style of the text is as a series of questions and answers. The authors propose the questions and the guides provide the interpretations. One common theme that the guides reintegrate regularly is that "anything" that comes into your experience does so only by way of the Law of attraction. As a person "thinks" about something, a type of magnetic energy literally pulls that event into their experience, it makes no difference whether you desire it or not. The more you "think" about it, the more magnetic energy you generate, and the stronger the pull. Quite simply if you don't want it, don't think about it.

The book gives a number of examples of this Law in action. One example was that of a robber wanting to rob some body. This wanting, or "thinking" about this event activated the Law of attraction to bring about this event to the robber. At the same time another person who might feel that they are a victim of fate and think they deserve to be victimize are also sending out thoughts to attract more of how they feel (expecting to be victimize). The Law of attraction gives both people what they are thinking and expecting. When the parties "coincidentally" meet, their collective prophecies are fulfilled. I understand the foundation of the ideals expressed, that the victim brought about their circumstances, but how would you explain this concept to someone who has been raped ? I'm sure you can think of a number of other examples, as to how this powerful Law seems to answer a lot of questions about events (good or bad) that seem to magically happen to people. The book then goes on to talk about the science of deliberate creation. This just means that now that you know the mechanics of the first Law, you can now create with deliberate intent, instead of by default.

When these Laws are utilized by a focused mind earth shattering events are the results. Be they the generation of new religions, or the manifestation of the horrors of a world war, to the sublimely maniacal heavy metal guitar riffs of Eddy Van Halen. The Laws works the same for "anybody" without exception. The authors then goes on to discuss the last Law in the trilogy of the Laws. In conjunction with the first 2 Laws, there is a 3rd companion, and that is the Law of allowing. It is one thing to want something, and set up the vibrations to attract the event, its another to "allow" the event to manifest in your life. If you feel unworthy and think you don't deserve something, all the daydreaming and craving won't bring the event into your life, because you are not allowing it to enter. Another name for this is self sabotage. A whole chapter is given to this concept, because of its importance. This book is a good read, because it further opens the eyes of the initiate, as well as the neophyte. What is really taking place as you read this book is that you are being reminded of what you already know. As Plato said "all learning is remembering".

Ask yourself, what events are you unconsciously creating ?

Did you know that if you want to become rich all you have to do is believe you will and you will. If you do not it's because you didn't believe you would. Oh this is such a pile of crap. It's nice to think positively but Esther Hicks is an outright liar and scam artist.

This is one of the few books I immediately threw in the garbage after giving it a fair chance. It is utter garbage.

I have seen that phony Esther Hicks on You Tube doing her "Abraham" act. She nods her head once or twice and then presto, she is not Esther Hicks anymore, she is "Abraham". And Abraham is a master at giving speeches, a real morale booster. He's a con artist, much like Esther Hicks. What a coincidence.

Esther Hicks needs a spanking for all the lies she tells.

Take a look at the name she chose for her lies. Abraham. She obviously meant some of us to believe that this is the spirit of the Biblical Abraham. Why else choose this name for your BS character?

Somehow I don't remember the Biblical Abraham taking such an interest in making us all rich. Weren't his interests a bit more spiritual than that?

I have never seen a spirit medium presentation that focused on making us rich. They are all spiritual. They are about reuniting with loved ones. They are not about making a financial killing.

This book is horse doody even though the message that it's good to think positively is a good message. Sure it is. Think positively, and maybe it will lead you to some great things financially. But this liar pretends to channel a spirit who is a motivational speaker, and it's offensive nonsense.

Ignore any negative reviews about this book and its message. If you don't like Ouija boards then pass over that section like I did. For the rest of the information contained in this material, your doing yourself a major disservice for not reading and comprehending this knowledge.

Once you read it, you'll know the truth it contains. Think about all those experiences you've had in life that YOU attracted into it. Did you not think you were magnetic in nature? I remember those little tiny messages I once gave myself which I totally erase from my thoughts today, such as "I'm having such good luck this week, next week will be a bummer because I have to repay for the good with bad." You know, we've all done similar little tactics, and thinking back on them, they were accurate because "We created them!" We really have to work on retraining our intentions, cause even those little thoughts manifest. Without this book, you may have found this out already, but with it, you will be guided so thoroughly, you can't help to eliminate these negative intentions and replace them with positive thoughts that WILL change your life!

Finally, we have the hidden message, to reprogram our thoughts, we are asked to become "selfish", yes it's true. Demand what we want, totally eliminate any thought on what we don't want, it will then fall away from us. In the end it isn't selfish means after all. We each have a good life, and the world becomes better, so in the long run, was that really selfish? Our free will means freeing up our willingness. Be willing to be selfish, be free with it, intent your demand for happiness and joy, see it, feel it, breathe it, then you receive it. And then get on here and tell us how it worked for you, and be a guide for others to follow these truths. Being selfish will be redefined, it isn't negative after all. Oh and remember, if your a magnet and I'm a magnet, then we are also attracting to each other. So if your day becomes great and your happy, your feeding the energy field of your neighbor with happy energies too. Nope, that sure isn't being selfish after all, by ways we once defined selfishness.

Really REALLY shocked that the Esther & Jerry Hicks’ books have such good reviews & haven’t been called out more for fraud & dangerous nonsense. But hey ho... here’s my two penneth.

I had no idea what Esther & Jerry Hicks claimed to do before buying the book, I had just heard they were good at teaching the law of attraction so added a few of their books to my list. Let’s start with the small stuff.... the book is repetitive (and that’s being polite!) It drags on wayyyy too much making the same point over and over. I actually thought in the beginning before Abraham was introduced that they were pretty good story tellers, I was definitely intrigued. But as soon as Abraham is introduced (which is very early on) I really struggled to keep picking this book back up to finish it. It’s taken way too long to get to the end.

And that leads me to my next point.... Abraham. Hmmm not a great believer in the fella (or fellas I should say). Partly ruined by the fact I am currently reading ‘The Demon Haunted World’ by Carl Sagan - bad timing with that one but if you believe in science then Carl Sagan’s book is a fantastic read. If you want to keep believing in Abraham, don’t read it as he will debunk every ‘spiritual’ thing you’ve ever believed in. I put spiritual in quotations because I see a lot of people make claims that if you don’t believe in this sort of stuff you’re not spiritual. Well you are. You just don’t believe that someone is channelling another being through themselves and that this being has all the answers to life.

Leading on to my next point; Abraham.... the being who has all the answers for us. However, some of his ‘answers’ are down right dangerous and deluded. Here’s one excerpt from the book;
Jerry: ‘... I’ve reached a point of allowing others to have their sexual choices, but I still feel uncomfortable when someone uses force against another person in any area...’

(well no kidding Sherlock! That should make most sane people feel uncomfortable at the very least!)

The response...

Abraham: ‘No matter what the subject is, it is important to understand that there are no victims. There are only co-creators.
You are all, as magnets, attracting unto you the subject of your thought. And so, if there is one who gives much thought to, or one who speaks much about, rape, then it is very like they will be the “victim” (yes the book puts the word victim here in apostrophes) by their words, of such an experience.’

I mean if I even have to go into why that passage is such a problem then perhaps you need to experience sexual assault for yourself and see if that passage helps you to understand that you’re not a victim, you actually brought the perpetrator on with your thoughts! I mean seriously?!! I am so disgusted. The fact that a woman actually helped ‘co-create’ this book as well is awful. That was the nail in the coffin for me.

Before that point Jerry had also asked our dear Abraham about another subject that makes him feel ‘uncomfortable’ and that is kids with cancer. I don’t have the exact excerpt because that would involve me having to reread some of the book to find it and I would rather chew my own arm off. However, as you can imagine from the above, it was very much the same of parents etc being to blame for negative thinking and passing this to their children who then clearly brought their own cancer on.

He also talks about the internal turmoil you may go through if you walk past someone getting beaten up. You don’t want to get hurt yourself but you also don’t want to ignore it. Well once you’ve made up your mind on what you’re going to do, just remember you brought that troublesome experience into your life through your negative thoughts and you never would’ve been put in that awkward situation had you not thought negatively in the first place.

Omg!!! I’m pulling my hair out just purely because of how dangerous this all is. I really feel like the ‘good’ that this book can achieve by getting people to think more positively is outweighed by such stupid and dangerous comments like these. Guess what, there’s some bad people in the world and sometimes you’re going to witness some crappy things. Yes it’s good to think positively and try and see the best outcomes and/or the best in people, but if your child happens to get an awful disease like cancer or you happen to be a victim, yes victim, of sexual assault, then no it is not your bloody fault! And the fact Jerry Hicks died of cancer and they tried to cover it up should prove that this is all a load of poppycock.

Yes that’s right.... Jerry Hicks died of cancer! Because I had no idea what the book would be about, I decided to do some research on the Hicks’. There’s a few reviews from people that actually used to work for them online (yes plural).... and they’re not good. Apparently the Hicks’ are rude and harsh people to work for; treating their employees badly, with little regard for their wellbeing, mental health or work/life balance and practically condoning, if not orchestrating themselves, workplace bullying… kind of goes against their teachings but I thought ok, let’s see what else comes up.

Jerry was a top seller at Amway (an MLM that has been in the news and had pretty bad press for being a bit shady- a lot of people will class MLM’s in general as shady anyway). Hmmm not great. And considering the guy was a top earner this means he knew how to sell and recruit A LOT of people into a business, which means he has the gift of the gab and ability to sell people on most things. My scepticism on the whole thing was starting to kick in. Then I read an article (several different articles actually) that Jerry actually died of cancer. But at first the Hicks’ tried to cover it up as a really bad insect bite that had made him ill.... because God forbid Jerry would get cancer.... surely he knows he can just think good thoughts and the cancer will go away! Better yet... he should’ve known not to think the kinds of thoughts that bring cancer on in the first place!

They saw the success another author had had with the Seth Material and they seized an opportunity to jump on the bandwagon and make some serious money. That’s about all I can congratulate them for.

I have had to take their other books I had on my reading list off. I have never written such a thorough review & I don’t care who it upsets or who thinks I’ve ‘missed the point’. Some of this stuff is dangerous.

The one positive thing I will say is, if you can take everything in the book with a pinch of salt.... a BIG pinch of salt, then obviously the parts about thinking better thoughts & to listen to how your body is feeling instead of trying to monitor every single thought etc will be helpful. However, I personally found it way too boring of a read.

I would just like to conclude that since Jerry died, apparently Esther no longer ‘summons’ Abraham in the same way on stage (Jerry used to summon him with a little bell and then the almighty Abraham would communicate through Esther - who laughably apparently puts another voice on to prove Abraham is now channeling through her). Well she now miraculously no longer needs the bell since Jerry died - it was his idea and she hated it. Her words quoted there. She now has the power to summon Abraham without it. I mean.... come on.

If you want to read a book by a couple of con artists, go ahead. I always give books I haven’t liked to charity but I am honestly so disgusted by this one & believe it to be so damaging that it will be going in the bin.

One final note from me is that, I fully believe our minds and bodies are powerful. It is scientifically proven that if you are constantly stressed your immune system lowers, which then obviously puts you at risk of illnesses and diseases. So I can also understand how our thoughts etc can make us sick as a very broad statement. But there’s so much more to it than that.

I bought the book hoping to explore this subject more, but I implore you to learn about this elsewhere as this book is not the one and these two do not deserve your hard earned money.

If you liked the movie The Secret, this book will take you deeper into understanding how to really make this powerful law work in your own life. I recommend this book frequently to clients and use it in my coaching and speaking work to emphasize how each of us really do create our reality. Now that I know how the Law works, I have become able to stay much more positive and trusting. It amazes me how things fall into place as they never have before. The principles within the book are ageless and timeless. We benefit from the refresher course nonetheless.

Read this on a recommendation. While I did not buy it wholesale (and some parts struck me as weird), I took two helpful points from a quick read:

1. You are going to attract the (good and bad) things you think about most.

2. It is better to think positively in terms of what you want rather than negatively in terms of what you don't want.

I ran out of time to finish this book, but I did get about halfway through before it became overdue. Once you get past the initial weirdness & into the Q&A part, it does get interesting, if repetitive. I completely believe in the power of thought and attitude to alter our perception of reality. Under certain conditions, I somewhat believe in their assertion that thought can actually alter reality. I have a very hard time believing their assertion that absolutely everything in your life was drawn to you, both good & bad. Like attracts like, yes, but I take issue with the implication that everything that happens in our lives is our fault. I mean, really, the jerk who runs the red light at 50 mph and slams into the minivan totally has brought an accident into his life, but the three-year-old in the car-seat can't possibly have "attracted" the crash! It's too blame-the-victim for me.

Despite some fantastic quotes I was moved to copy and show other people, the more time passes, the more the memory of this book irritates me. Since reading it, I've been reading the blog of Bill Harris, founder of Centerpointe & the Holosync meditation technology. He's been talking about the different stages of development & how ways of thinking such as are featured in this book are "pre-conventional"--i.e. "magical"--and put the self at the center of the universe. Thought without corresponding action, in other words. So in the end, I'm revising my rating and recommending skipping this book in favor of others written by deeper thinkers. Deepak Chopra, maybe, or the Law of Attraction by Michael Losier (similar title, different book).

My original review:

I'm only about a quarter of the way through this book so far, and it's just now starting to get to the good stuff. The whole beginning is...well, hm...out there, to say the least. The "Law of Attraction" basically is what the book & DVD "The Secret" is based upon--namely that your thoughts affect your reality and that what you focus your attention on (for good or for ill) is what you'll get more of. This premise rings very true for me in most respects, so I'm glad I stuck it out through the channeling-the-spirits phase of the book. But I read another version of this a while back...and it's on my bookshelves at home...and I can't think of the author(s) right now, but the title is the same or similar.... Well, the main thing is that the other book had less crazy stuff but also less detail, so it's probably helpful to read both.

I don't know why the authors of this book bothered to tell us the material was channeled from non-physical entities, other than, I presume, to claim authority beyond their own selves (or just to tell the truth as they see it, perhaps). I'm not a believer in channeling and that's why I was reluctant to buy and read it, but I persevered, and I have to say that the material stands on its own. If the authors had just written the book as a work of fiction (which it may well be, in reality), it would be just as good. Read with an open mind, the material just rings true. Surely we've all noticed that complainers tend to hang together, optimistic people tend to hang together, gamblers, jocks, etc. That's all a result of the fact that they have common interests and viewpoints and the truth is that if you want to jump levels from one plane to another whether it be financial, social, spiritual, or whatever, you won't find access through your current circle of people who are all living inside a similar agreement reality as the one you are in yourself. You need to break out and be assimilated into groups of others who can help grease the wheels, steer you in new ways and who will support you in your most wanted endeavors. How to do that is what this book is all about. I have been using the advice in the book for several weeks now and I am shocked at how my life is changing. Instead of taking two steps forwards and three back and sometimes the other way around, I find that I move forwards all the time, and other people support me in my endeavors, now that I'm speaking my future into existence as suggested in this book. So if you're a skeptic and you don't believe in the channeling, like I am, read it anyway and try it out. It's well worth the effort whether it came from a group of non-physicial entities or a couple of people who just wrote a book. Read it, follow it and win.

Love, validation, the secret of eternal life will all be found in this book. What is the cost? Only your critical thinking skills. You must completely surrender yourself to your emotional guidance and let it show you the secrets of the universe. Esther Hicks channels this book (or as she would say, "receives" from a nonphysical perspective) from the group of entities collectively known as Abraham. They know what you want, everything that you desire, and they will tell you everything that will make you feel more at ease about this world around you. I highly recommend this book as the beginning of a serious delusion about the nature of reality, as you exchange actual reality with the one presented by Abraham. The upside? The belief that you are the creator of your reality. The downside? Immense guilt and self-blame for everything that is going wrong. Will this be the answer to all your questions? I've known plenty of Abers (an affectionate term used among people applying the principles of Abraham) and they have just as many problems as everyone else. The only difference is Abers are more guarded and defensive about their altered perception of the universe than most. Though, you will see similar delusions in other fundamental religions. If you continue on this path, be prepared to listen to many more CDs and youtube videos. They will help you in slowly letting go of that silly critical thinking and focusing on reality and you will open up to a new, better emotional thinking. Let this emotional snuff fill your mind and heart and control your life!

When it comes to 'self-help' type books, I have read 'em all. Over the years I have scoured book stores and market stalls seeking that one book that would answer all my questions AND motivate me to get things happening in my life. 'The Law of Attraction' is truly the first book I have read, that encompasses everything that is required for success and inner peace. I read the entire book within 3 days, put it down and realised I had found THE book! Since then I have been applying these new principles (over the past 4 weeks) and I have had the strangest, most exciting things happen to me. I am finding money in the street!! seriously. I found $195 rolled up on the side walk, on my street! I also found $20 behind my car in the car park...this is just thru using the ideas in the book. I have had one string of 'happenings' after another these last 30 days.

PLEASE, If you are seeking a way to make sense of your life, if you have wondered - 'does life have a purpose?', 'why am I so unlucky all the time!', 'why are there so many religions?', 'what is my THING that I am meant to do in life', 'why do bad things happening to good people?'...if you want answers to these questions, then this is the book for you!

Once you grasp the teachings in this wonderful book, it will ALL make sense. And you will stop asking and start living!!

This book was pretty wacky. It made a few good points, but in general the idea that everyone has complete free will, and all misfortune is self-induced is a very dangerous one. This kind of thinking contributes to scary modes of thought including rational self-interest and individualism, ideologies that actively deny the existence of social structures and cultural contexts. This justification of existing systems of inequality can only contribute to more human suffering.

Chương I, Kể về con đường tới trải nghiệm Abraham

My two star rating is actually generous as I was on the fence between one and two stars. This book does contain some positive general advice which makes sense: thinking of my intentions in a positive, consistent manner is likely to motivate me to take more concrete steps. And it contains some useful exercises and mantras that I may put into practice based on their own merits. However, that is where the positives end and frankly, I feel like I could have easily extracted these positives from some other, overall much better content.

Now for the negatives. According to this book, did you know that if you're living paycheck to paycheck, worrying about how you're going to feed your kids next week, it's actually your fault! What you need to do, is stop thinking about the fact that you have no money and scream into the universe that you want wealth! Within 60 days, you'll be rich! It's a dang shame my mom didn't read this book before she died of cancer, because apparently all she had to do to cure it was state her intention for health.

I find spirituality interesting. But when it completely contradicts science, it's pretty easy to dismiss. And this content is downright cultish. It doesn't sit right with me that these people's argument literally blames individuals for the harm that comes to them. They literally say that rape victims were "co-creators" of their experience. It completely disregards the effects trauma has on folks. It completely disregards society's influence on people. It's just complete and utter bs.

I mean, I don't really know what I was expecting. But even if the book accurately described the way things work, that way it recommends we handle others' suffering is absolutely horrific. Ignore suffering and you won't ever experience it? If your friend wants to talk about their abusive relationship, change the subject so you don't get that negative energy, or better yet just tell them to scream their intention to have a healthy relationship into the void. Problem solved.

Learn from my mistake and save 5 hours of your life. And whatever you do, don't drink the kool aid.

"FOCUSING UPON SOLUTIONS MAKES YOU FEEL POSITION EMOTIONS. FOCUSING UPON PROBLEM MAKES YOU FEEL NEGATIVE EMOTIONS"

This book feels one with positivity that's for sure and gives one a new outlook towards life. Looking forward to apply the teachings I have learnt from this book in my life as well . The teachings written in these pages definitely changes one's thought process in a positive way. It helps us understand the two kinds of emotions positive and negative thereby guiding us how to deliberately convert this negative emotions into positive one in a life changing way. This was a very good read indeed.

The seeking movement of the ego (wanting, dukkha, desire) is the root of suffering in several spiritual traditions. Here it's celebrated as the source by which we can manifest desired things. I couldn't handle the disappointment of doing the visualizations with zero payoff. I was just feeding the mind monster, being lost in thought instead of being present. I listened to several of these CD's before I gave up. Channeled works tends to be bologna, but I must admit this was entertaining.

A very interesting perspective on how the Universe works and how our thoughts manifest in our reality. Most people think the Law of Attraction has everything to do with the paranormal world, but I think it is quite a simple, tangible rule of life: if you want to be negative and you choose to face life in a pessimistic way, you are going to attract events, people and experiences that match your frequency.
Life is full of events we dislike, sometimes horrendous and hard to deal with. Despite that, it is up to us to find a way to react to such events in the most effective and useful way.
The Law of Attraction has been interpreted in a very childish "good and evil" way: if you think about something positive, you must attract more positive things into your life. But it's not that simple.
Life is complex, sometimes hard, chaotic and unmanageable. And humans must and will experience chaos, peace, anger, relaxation, sadness, joy no matter how hard they focus on one side or the other. We cannot have good without evil just like we cannot have a day without night.
But even though we cannot manipulate or control our reality, we can certainly control how we react to it. We can change our perception and suddenly become the best version of ourselves.

I'm a spiritual person and try to be open-minded; and I'm not sure that I buy into the idea that this spirit Abraham actually speaks to the author Esther Hicks. That being said, you can still get a lot out of this book even if you have doubts about the author's ability in that regard.

The main premise of the book is that you will attract what you give your time and attention to. I have found this to be largely true over the course of my life, and there is certainly merit in following the author's recommendations about how to attract more of what you want into your life (and less of what you don't).

One of the best things that I read in this book is this (I'm paraphrasing here): The best gift that you can give other people is your expectation of their success. This works better than focusing on what they lack. Instead focus on what you want to achieve.

I therefore highly recommend this book.

The most powerful part of this for me was "segment intention." The rest of it I've read in the Secret or from other New Age authors. The "channeled" element of this book is interesting. Has anyone else listened to recordings of Ester Hicks/Abraham from the 80's? She had a much thicker "channeled" accent then, I wonder what changed it with time...

6 years ago I tried reading this book and hated its guts! Then I rated it 1*. Today I'm giving it 5*. Same book, different me. Embrace change! Change is good, change is normal. Do I feel bad for originally giving it 1*? No, the old me would feel that way, the new me is just happy she loves the book now. All is good!

First comes my Official Rating. In my view, given what Esther Hicks aimed for, to what degree was that accomplished?

No doubt about it, Esther Hicks was one of the superstars of the New Age Years (from 1980 until the Shift into the Age of Awakening, almost exactly 10 years ago). She and Abraham were a mighty team, promising energy-related ways with a near-magical power, "attracting" the fulfillment of our wishes.

Incredibly influential then was that promise, and also that kind of book -- a channeled book. Seems to me, the appeal of that book came entirely from the channeled teachings, not so much any literary flair. Esther's fans whom I've known fell in love with her sweetness and faith/ some fans were awed by her ability to bring forth knowledge from a superhuman source of truth-and-goodness like Abraham.

Given the human author's intent, I think *** stars is a fair rating.

Now, I'll follow up with a review that shares a second kind of rating, my Personal Rating. Here's where I'll give a second number of stars according to my current opinion... and my personal values.

Oops, * star.

Probably I will never publish an equally controversial review here on Goodreads, so some of you might aim to turn away right now. Otherwise, for any of you who are curious, let's take a closer look at this book from Abraham-Hicks.

FIRST OF ALL, WHO IS ABRAHAM?

Wikipedia summarizes the general consensus in this way:

According to Esther and Jerry Hicks, "Abraham" consists of a group of entities that are "interpreted" by Esther Hicks.

Abraham has described themselves as "a group consciousness from the non-physical dimension".

They have also said, "We are that which you are.

Esther, of course, is a channeler. Psychics, channelers, and mediums helped to drive the Law of Attraction (LOA) movement. Other than either believing or not believing, readers have not generally had the chance to evaluate what Esther and Jerry claimed, nor what Abraham claimed.

However, I Have Published Research on This, Research Involving Energetic Literacy

As the founder of Energy Spirituality™, one of the skill sets I've developed is different from aura reading as psychics do it. (If you read my website, or blog, or books, you'll learn how different I am from a psychic, intuitive, channeler, or medium.)

Basically, what do I use, and teach, for deeper perception? Aura Reading Through All Your Senses® is a system for researching auras beyond general readings or chakra readings done by today's psychics, healers, etc.

Long story short, I found a way to research Abraham as Abraham alone . And also a way to research Esther Hicks simply being herself .

Key to doing this detailed aura research on Esther was to find a photo when she was posing, "being herself." In addition, I did separate research, based on a photo taken while she was channeling Abraham. With each set of research, I explored one "chakra databank" after another -- using the first chakra databank array ever published, to my knowledge.

If curious, you can find details at my Goodreads author page, over at the title with the green cover, Magnetize Money with Energetic Literacy. Those details substantiate my observation that Abraham was:

* Neither a group of entities
* Nor "a group consciousness from the non-physical dimension"

Rather Abraham is a clever and quite power-hungry astral entity, a discarnate who aims to influence as many humans as possible.

Reasonable People Can Certainly Agree to Disagree

Just today I had a lovely visit with a close friend, "Gladys." She is a pillar of her Evangelical church, while I teach Energy Spirituality. We have a great deal in common, as well as having some areas of divergent belief.

What would be a deal breaker for the friendship between Gladys and me? If either one of us turned out to be, in reality, a great big liar.

Doesn't integrity matter to you as well, Goodreader? Sadly, Esther Hicks didn't know better than to trustingly believe what Abraham told her about himself. How he lied!

I encourage you to read Pages 88-92 of my aforementioned book with the green cover. Then you can decide for yourself whether or not Abraham was really a lovely group of high-minded, superior, spirits.

The Basics of the Teachings of Abraham - the title led me to believe that these were teachings of Abraham, the father of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

How wrong I was!

There's a "we", supernatural beings collectively known as "Abraham" to Esther through meditative practices, but apparently, there is no God.

Let's just stop right there for a moment. There's non-physical beings, but God isn't referenced? And the message is all about "me" and how to get what "I" want.

The Law of Attraction is considered Its ("Abraham's") main principle. You attract what you pay attention to. Fine. I'm applying that law and rebuking this book and all the non-God-focused "beings" that it encompasses.

DNF. Called a halt near the beginning. Skimmed enough to see where it was heading and returned the book.

I recommend the Holy Bible over this book any day for anyone seeking answers and looking for true happiness.

Ok, I'm into this sort of thing, of believing that there's a all knowing collective consciousness. Ester Hicks seems to be able to tap into this through an entity she calls Abraham. She is a conduit or channel into this knowledge.

Kind-a scary at first, then comforting and inspirational thoroughout, Jerry asks great questions of this all knowing entity, it has fantastic answers that are guiding principals for how we should live our lives.

Makes you really watch what you're thinking about. Proves over and over again that our thoughts shape our experience.

I liked it so much, I'm now reading, "The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intention" I'm excited about this one too.

Jerry & Esther, If you're reading this, I'd love to submit some questions of my own!

Thank you for sharing your work!

Had to put it down and say NOPE when the author literally said that there are no victims of assault, and if you think a lot about r*pe, you're going to attract it??? Yeah, miss me with it.
