2020 CrossFit Games Day 1 Discussion Thread
Welcome to the beginning of the CrossFit Games for the 2020 season! It's been a wild year in CrossFit with changes in management, canceled events, and a whole new format, but here we are. Get ready for 2 days of athletes pushing themselves to their max in order to try and grab one of the coveted 5 spots at the ranch in Aromas, California.
This year everything is working a little differently. Each day will be split into 2 blocks during which the athletes will have time to perform 2 workouts. They will have only one chance at each workout, and there will be no restarts and no re-dos. At the end of the weekend the top 5 athletes in the men's and women's division will earn a berth for the Finals occurring October 19-25.
Friday:
Block 1: 9AM-12PM
Block 2: 3PM-6PM
Saturday:
Block 3: 9AM-12PM
Block 4: 12PM-3PM
At the end of each block in the Pacific time zone, scores will start to flow in and CrossFit will have an update show featuring athletes videos, and analysis of the leaderboard.
Block 1
9AM-12PM (athlete's local time)
Individual Event 1: Friendly Fran
3 Rounds for time
21 Thrusters (115/85lb)(~52/38.5kg)
21 chest-to-bar pullups
Individual Event 2: 1 rep max Front Squat
Athletes will have 20 minutes to establish a 1-rep max front squat
Block 2
3PM-6PM (athlete's local time)
Individual Event 3: Damn Diane
3 rounds for time
15 deadlifts (315/205lb)(~143/93kg)
15 strict deficit handstand pushups (3.5/2in deficits)
Individual Event 4: 1000 meter row
Athletes will row 1000 meters for time
If there's anything else you think needs to be included (streams, resources, reporting), or if I missed anything please send me a message
Why are they doing individual events?
On instagram I found a comment about a teen who would have been placed 6th if she could have competed in the 1rm front squat. Now I can't find that post anywhere... Does anyone know who she is, it was mighty impressive
I think you’re thinking of malobrien_
Yup! That's the one, thanks

She’s crazy strong!!
There are plenty of stern weightlifters in the US that would win the 1RM FS but they wouldn’t be able to do much of anything else
I know, except she was a crossfitter and 16 years old
So y'all can have something to compare with, my n00b self did -1k row in 4:38 -front squated 120# -scaled Friendly Fran (55# thruster, ring rows) in 13:08.
Was actually a pretty good Saturday morning workout for me.
But what’s your max Handstand Hold

Chandler blasting country while doing his squats was great!
Matt Fraser is not human. 3:08 for Friendly Fan is insane
Next closest time is Tia with 3:40. Mind blowing speed.
He's not human? Tia with the sub 2:28 Damn Diane. I don't think I could do 135# deadlifts and pushups for the same rep scheme that fast. It's insane.
I didn't check the Diane results before posting. I am speechless
Did you check his video of Friendly Fran? Man went unbroken on everything with good quality reps. I think going forward they should start looking for second fittest--Tia and Mat so far are just destroying the field.
Fraser absolutely trolling the field with event 1, did anyone catch the music in the background? Amazing. https://open.spotify.com/track/3VBvV5wMMgEkrXqILx8JnB?si=MOPygXGYTHS4VE2Z4KJjSA
That song is everything wrong with music.
Ear cancer.
I actually added this to the workout playlist cuz of that lol
Snap!
Tia used the same music I noticed. They're not messing around.
Do you mean because of this video? I think this song might just be popular (not sure why lol) or there could be only some songs they can use in media because of copyrights.

Armchair Judges Assemble!!!!!!!
http://www.youtubemultiplier.com/5f657ca8ad86e-event-1-crossfit-games.php Here is a synced viewer for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of men’s event 1. I recommend watching on a laptop vs mobile or ipad.
Cheers!
Mat’s event one is up.

What a stud my god
I like how Shane was SCREAMING at Tia during her event, but with Mat he just lets him do his thing.
That's also the mark of a good coach. He doesn't treat them the same because they aren't.
Exactly. That's what I was getting at.
I was somewhat disappointed while watching the live stream, not by anything done by CrossFit HQ, but more with the community. I'm sure lurking in the live chat of the YouTube stream isn't a great way to get an accurate representation of the community as a whole, but so much negativity was permiating the stream.
I have to think that previous year's games would take AT LEAST a year to plan, if not more. HQ definitely did not get that luxury of time this year. I feel grateful to have content to look forward to at all, but found it hard to look past people illegitimizing this year's competition. Maybe 2020 has lowered my expectations in general. Still I think we're lucky to get to watch the athletes compete at all considering all the turmoil that has occurred within our sport.
To end my soap-box rant, I do have a question: The judges for individuals were sent by HQ and we're all briefed in the same way for each movement, correct? If that's the case, I don't see why not to trust the movement standards being shown.
I guess the 2020 Games have been the only thing in a long time that I've been looking forward to. It's been refreshing to simply have something to look forward to this year, simply for my own mental health. It's frustrating seeing others try to tear it down.
I think like many other sports, this year will have an asterisk next to it as far as who is champion because the competition year did not pan out as expected. But I think a lot may say last year had one as well since they changed the format. Either way, I’m enjoying it and hoping the change in CF ownership means many more years of competition.
If you’re referring to the criticism over judging and no reps, that happens regardless of year, location, competition, etc. So the armchair judging actually makes it feel more like a normal year of CF competition. 😀

Question for anyone who knows - are they taught to do the over exaggerated move-head-along-with-every-rep thing they all do?
You talking about the judges?
Yes, the judges. And it's not just this year, they have done that at competition events as long as I can remember. It looks honestly goofy. You don't need to bounce your head up and down while they do pullups or lunges or whatever. You can see whether they are meeting the standard without any of that sillyness. I swear they are taught to do it but I've always wondered.
Which movement are you talking about specifically? On thrusters and HSPU they bring their head through because it engages their shoulders more for a stronger push.
I was responding to a person who was talking about judges so I thought it was clear, but apparently not. I was asking about why the judges bob their head up and down as if they need to do it to verify the movement standard.
Ok, so am I just naive in trusting their judging then? I get the argument that there were some "soft lockouts", but we also allow kipping pullups and whatnot. It's in the nature of a true competitor to push the standard to its brim for any advantage possible
How hard was it for them to do side by side comparison videos? I don’t want to see highlights, I want to see the athletes do the workout. G-damn I want the normal CrossFit Games format.
I saw maybe two YouTube videos with side by side. Thank you TeamRichey & FriendlyFran (not sure if I got that correct).
I’m trying to catch up on the entire weekend now, and I’m sitting here watching every athlete 1 at a time, each one with their own YouTube video
It’s unwatchable
Doesn’t even say the front squat weight on screen. It’s a 15 second video of a dude lifting followed by a CF games logo. I feel like I’m watching a Vine compilation.
I listened to Sean Woodlands podcast with Castro and they made it clear they purposely covered the events this way for the athletes benefit, which I guess is fine cuz we are getting Games style coverage at The Ranch. But I did the same and watch each event and that was painful. Only a handful of the athletes were fun to watch.
Out of all the surprises today, I did not expect Vellner, Fikowski and David Shorunke to hit the same 1RM FS. They're obviously all strong guys but I kinda thought Shorunke would push more.
Also no disrespect to any of these athletes but I think the standings are showing what happens in the current sanctionals set up....
I’m surprised at a lot of the women’s FS numbers and 1k row times. I know anatomically there are huge differences between men and women, but I’m about as average of a Crossfitter as you can get and I can do a 3:30ish 1k row. Granted, I didn’t do all the events they did prior to the row, so they were probably exhausted.
I say this as I’m eating pizza in my boxers watching Netflix on my couch.
I am a tall woman and did a 1k row today for fun (newsflash: it wasn't fun, half way i wanted to quit) and actually got a 3:30. Made me kind a proud of myself, but i realise it is not a real comparison.
Nice job!
If you place these two workouts in a vacuum any athlete that is strong and powerful will do well. Row numbers are typically un impressive for the top tier CF but when you add these to the broad range of other tasks they can do the field separates quickly!

I mean there's no point comparing your own numbers unless you've done all 4 of these tests in one day....right?
1 km is 0.62 miles
maybe its just me, but for all the "CF" stuff, the 1000m row for me has been the most interesting and brutaly beautiful events to watch. Just saw Noah, Travis and Chandler smith on their attempts - just seeing their pacing, their grit, the body language - it's like your Crossfit vinegar strokes, raw send nothing to it but to do it sort of thing.
Minus the terrible rowing technique
Travis’s face at the end of his row was great. Pure pain. We’ve all been there and can relate. Oof
In the class in which Tia and Mat compete there is no excuse for the missed reps that both of them showed. I am scratching my head.
If you watch the part where Vellner and Fikowski dl you can see how much better they bring it to full extension versus tia and mat. I thought the same thing when I saw
What are you referring to?
Mat failed to complete many of his deadlifts by not standing straight. This could be seen in realtime. When you are such an athlete that you are pushing the bar down to the ground because gravity isnt fast enough... you can take the milliseconds to be sure you complete the rep at the top and make it clear that you are finishing the rep.
Tia's thrusters... there were 3 or 4 clear no-reps and maybe a half dozen 'questionable'.
Ok. I can give a judge some leeway. But when you are so far ahead of the pack like Tia and Mat... Make it obvious, remove all doubt - you can afford the time.
What are your thoughts on Samuel Kwants thrusters then? IMO he never broke parallel (at least from what I could see in the video). But this is always the trouble with judging and judging standards. Even if those were experienced judges, there's always room for error.
Precisely my point. The judges are not the only ones making the errors... the athletes did too. The athlete should complete the movement beyond any shadow of a doubt so that the judge does not need to be obliged to do mental gymnastics with laser precision.
Shoulders too far forwards at the top of the rep? Both of them did it. And it did seem... Dubious.
What?
Mat failed to complete some DLs. Tia failed to reach depth at the bottom of her thrusters.
My point is that they are so good they should not need to leave any question at all that they completed the rep. Other athletes manage to leave no doubt and still perform well.
Edit: finished my coffee and found errors
Ah got ya.
these events overall have like a mini-Regionals feel to it - separation really not so much maybe 'fitness' (whatever that means) but movement speed overall, and more "performative" aspect, in which small, minor mistakes (1k row) in pacing can be very costly on the leaderboard.
The events are so fast it just feels like the Open on steroids (pun somewhat intended).
Games workouts should be longer in my opinion to show separation. Make one mistake and your workout is cooked.
these events have a 'Regionals' feel, with many fast short events, that prioritize movement speed and punish small mistakes, a 'gymnastics' twist (legless rope climbs while back, then handstand walk, then the ramp, now the handstand hold), and then finally a Regionals-style "chipper" long event (Nancy) to kind of level the playing field a bit. so these events really jack up the intensity to 110%; and then I think we'll see what you call the "Games" Games events at the Ranch this year.
No videos from Fraser yet?
His event 1 video just went up on the Crossfit Games Youtube channel.
People were going nuts on the live chat wanting to see Mats videos. HQ was just saving them for the live streamed show. I be they turn up on YouTube within the hour.
