How Curse Technique Lapse: Blue works (Manga Spoilers)

Manga Spoilers

I made a post explaining how I think Gojo's powers work, I realized that there were holes in my theory of how he applies limitless in technique blue after re-reading the manga. SKIP TO "My theory on how it works" which is in bold if you don't care about the previous theory, I'm going to start off debunking my old theory.

Originally I though technique Blue was Gojo splitting up space by amplifying his neutral limitless to the point that he was able to create negative space by bringing the concept of a discontinuous function to life like the formula 1/x. My basis for this is he states that he amplifies limitless and the negative numbers which allows him to create anomalies like -1 apples to exist leading me to assume there was a creation of negative space which sucks everything in. The reason why I now think this is wrong is because if you were to graph what Gojo says he is doing it wouldn't make sense

discontinuous graph

Lets assume the x-axis on this graph is distance and y is the amount of curse energy used. When using limitless, the closer something gets to Gojo the more cursed energy is required to keep them at bay by splitting the space even smaller - this would functionally make sense in an effort to keep him balanced as a character. Now when using blue he is amplifying this to cut the space up even more so that the amount of space is practically 0, but space cannot be 0 since in the function 1/0 would be an error, so the space gets split and negative space occurs. But according to the graph, the y axis flips and the amount of curse energy required would technically become positive and requires less energy to create more negative space. Of course the axis labels could be wrong, the y axis could represent the amount of space created between Gojo and the enemy meaning the closer someone gets the more space created. But another reason that deviates me away from this idea is the fact that Gojo has been stated to be using technique blue to teleport.

In the manga Geto dictates that Gojo is using technique blue to teleport. If this is true I think it would be impossible for Gojo to manipulate negative space to isolate just himself to the teleport point instead of sucking everything in like what technique blue does by itself.

My theory on how it works:

I think technique blue would be like the function y= -1/x where y can only be negative numbers.

ignore the formula used, it's manipulated to show the numbers better, gojo's blue ability would be the values in the bottom quadrant. Top quadrant doesn't exist.

Because cursed energy is negative by nature I used this formula instead, the way blue works is he amplifies the limitless to create an infinite amount of space but then converges it back to its original amount. To explain, limitless might be taking for example 1 cubic meter of space and splitting it infinitely but Gojo's ability makes it so each piece of space is treated as if it is 1 cubic meter. This would explain why things slow down the closer they get because there are more tinier fractions that are being valued back at 1 cubic meter. Gojo amplifies this to a high degree and then converges all the space back into 1 cubic meter. The difference between the amount of space created and the amount he started with would be negative space which is not naturally occurring and then the universe collapses space onto this point . He can teleport in a controlled manner because he can control the specific points this way instead of creating something similar to a black hole in that it would pull everything.

My basis for this is:

  • Gojo saying he can create anomalies like negative apples, after looking into it there's a topic in math if negative numbers can exist such as someone owning negative apples or traveling negative distance. Negative values in real life are relative to a positive action that has occurred. For example, negative apples would occur if you owe someone apples and negative distance would occur if you were to travel in a direction opposite of which you first traveled.

  • On this graph points going to the right on the x axis is increasing in distance meaning it is positive. But if you were to move the points to the left it is moving in a negative direction. It is possible that when Gojo says he is amplifying the negative numbers he is referring to either the direction of space on the graph or the amount of cursed energy he is using, I doubt it is energy though because he has maximum output technique blue so the difference in increasing cursed energy in using regular blue isn't as much

  • The reason why I think its him converging the space back to 1 is the whole apples thing. I couldn't think of a solid reason on how he creates something that is pretty unstable to teleport in a controlled manner. Just like the explanation of how negative numbers can exist in real life, Gojo is technically creating space by splitting it and having it occupy more space then it normally would, then taking it away when he converges back meaning there's an area of unoccupied space. To compare this to apples, think of him taking an apple and cutting it up in fractions, lets say as an example he cuts it 100 times like the graph but he magically turns each piece of apple into 1 full apple. There are now 100 apples, he then puts the pieces back together into one apple after reverting them back to pieces and now 99 apples are missing which can be expressed as -99 apples in a formulaic expression.

  • I find it hard to imagine gojo can teleport long distances by creating negative space at a point because he wouldn't be able to isolate himself. He himself says he has to be careful using blue close to him. I think the teleportation is diverging a small piece of space away from him and having it converge at another point. Blue is just a crazier amped up version

  • Lastly the naming, its called Curse Technique Lapse: Blue, I realized that that it uses the term Lapse, I had to double check the definition and saw "pass gradually into (an inferior state or condition) " "an interval or passage of time " "a temporary failure of concentration, memory, or judgment " all of which I can't clearly explain but it sounds similar to the concept of collapsing in some cases or passing a point. Passing a point would make sense for teleporting, he causes the space to lapse.

Honestly, I know im looking to deep into it, its easy to write it off as it attracts and it allows him to teleport. I wrote this because I was annoyed at myself for being unable to explain it without any flaws in the logic. The whole bit of creating negative apples threw off my understanding the hardest and I really wanted to know what that means.

That Desmos Graphing Calculator tho

u/Dsighed avatar

yea I wanted to try a bunch of formula's to see if I could produce something that logically fits his ability and only knew of desmos from highschool

I’m a hardcore maths geek + Gojo fan and I love this post. Your explanation etc are all spot on as far as my understanding goes.

I've always thought that blue creates negative space and then everything around is forced to fill up that space, and red compresses and then repels. Like pulling a rubber band and then moves back to it's original shape making an inward motion, and squishing a ball then releasing it making an outward motion (just over exaggerated ofc), but now I'm more confused 😭🙏

I'm not sure if you're deep into the manga but from where we currently are on im more confident that gojo isn't literally creating negative space just off the wording that they use. In physics and math when expressing something as a function they use negative to show something being retracted. For example, if I walk 10m north and then 20m south im essentially 10m south in the end, but we can re-express that as being -10m north but IRL theres no such thing as negative distance (sometimes things need to be expressed in this manner). So imagine for blue, gojo amplifies the limitless like he says which manipulates reality so that there's more space than what was supposed to exist but then reverts this creation, he's essentially removing the space he created and the universe crashes on that point to fill up that space.

so basically what my theory is is that gojo's cursed technique can allow him to create more space by default to create his barrier, blue would him collapsing the space he created back to how it originally was creating that suction effect, red could be creating and compressing space before releasing.
