About
At the northwestern corner of San Francisco, there is a series of stunning views at every turn in this wild and windy trail. Hillsides of cypress and wildflowers, views of shipwrecks and access to the ruins of Sutro baths, a San Francisco specials memory.

Beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. You don’t want to miss this. You can walk on the sand or on sidewalk. There are plenty of structures for great views from above. Felt safe, though there seems to be many signs about people breaking in to cars all over the city. Lock everything in your trunk.

Start your walk at the visitor's center to orient yourself to the area and wild life. I often see hawks here. Walk from the north of the parking lot along beautiful trails. I recommend going down to Mile Rock beach and then on you way back up take the trail to the left to the point with a labyrinth. You will see lots of pelicans too.

Beautiful location with stunning views! This is a great place to enjoy nature and get away from the hustle & bustle of the city and crowded tourist spots. A peaceful hiking trail runs through the forest and along the coast for a couple of miles, just note that it doesn't loop, so plan accordingly. We took an Uber to the Sutro Baths, hiked the coastal trail and then took another Uber back to Fisherman's Wharf when we reached the end. Beautiful scenery and excellent views of Golden Gate Bridge offer lots of opportunities for photos!

This trail winds along the coast on the western edge of the city. You can get great views of the city, Pacific Ocean, Golden Gate Bridge, Sutro Baths and plenty more. Definitely worth checking out.

If you go to San Francisco, please make sure you put on your walking shoes and get out to Land's End. Everyone imagines the best view of the Gold Gate Bridge would be from the Presidio, but in fact, on Lands' End, surrounded by forest and standing above soaring cliffs, you get a picture postcard view of the Golden Gate and the Bay in general. It's just a spectactular piece of Nature right in the heart of the city which begs to be explored.

You get great view of Golden Gate Bridge, Pacific Ocean and Marin Headlands. It has amazing trails and you can walk down to Sutro Bath upper and lower lookouts. lands End had slots if instinctive tall majestic trees. Within Lands End, you have trails access to Miles Rock Beach, Labyrinth, Eagle lookout Points, USS San Francisco Memorial , Legion of Honor, Holocaust Memorial and Lincoln Park.
You you come late afternoon, you can catching amazing sunset. It’s a bit chilly with sea breeze and wind and temperature dips toward evening, so bring along a sweater or a jacket.
You take Muni bus 38R, 18 to get here. Lands End have nice maintained trails if you want to bring baby or toddler along with you, suggest you not bring strollers if you intend to go all the way down to Mile Rock beach or lower Sutro Bath, since there are steep steps. This is truly a great destinations for stunning views and must sees.

We took the hike to Lands End and the Labyrinth with my 7 kids ages 3-21. This was a favorite among them all. The hike was pretty easy as we are a hiking family and enjoy that kind of activity. When. you get to the end the kids enjoyed playing in the sand and the surf and spotting sea lions in the bay. the Labyrinth was way cool and all my kids had to walk it to the end. There is also a beautiful picture perfect view of the bridge from here.

Yes the large parking lot is OPEN (as of Aug 2020). We have never had an issue with parking here when arriving before 10am, after 10am you may have to wait for someone to leave but there are always people coming and going.
The public bathroom next to the Visitor's Center is CLOSED. Plan accordingly as there are no other bathrooms (portables) along the way other than natural ones (i.e. trees).
YES dogs are ALLOWED on leash.
NO the trail is not difficult but there are lots of stairs - they are wide as is this whole trail and allow for social distancing.
Be prepared for spectacular view unless Karl the Fog is visiting SF, in which case you may not be able to see the bridge at all!

A close second to Fisherman’s wharf in terms of visitors, this 2 mile trail from Eagles Point to the USS San Francisco is on the top ten of San Francisco must dos.
Along the way there are lots of scenic overlooks to taste the sea air and catch your breath. Interpretive signs tell stories of the wildlife, geology, natural and human history. Did I mention the Golden Gate Bridge views?
If, you can, I dare you to keep pace with the multiple barges, freighters, and cruise ships.
I recommend for families and anyone with a modicum level of fitness. There is one staircase otherwise terrain is fairly level.

We reached the Land’s End area easily by Muni bus and were lucky enough to walk the higher trail on a beautiful day with clear skies. A lovely walk on tree-lined paths with unspoilt beaches to visit below. Definitely the best views of Golden Gate Bridge, Marin County and the bay itself. One of the nicest days spent during our stay in the city.

Is this trail mostly flat? How difficult is it?
Cathy H
Gold Coast, Australia171 contributions
The trail is packed crushed gravel and very easy to walk on.
It is flat and wide, easy to use prams and bikes on.
If you want to descend to the coast line there are wide stairs at all the vista spots, you would need to carry bikes and prams down. Approx 150+ stairs but the views are amazing and worth the extra effort. The tracks down at the bottom are more eroded but easy to manage if you have a helper. This is an excellent day out, so much to see. Take a jacket and start, if it’s windy or overcast or foggy it will be really cold. It was a glorious sunny day for us, we were so lucky. Hope you have a great day also. I rate this hiking trail 10/10

Can you hike Lands End after sunrise but before 9am if you don’t need to park a car?
How long is the trail?
Is it a circle or can you start and finish in different places ?
How long should you allow to hike and see Land End?
JoeKupe

Yes, you can start your hike before 9am at Sunrise. We started by the muni golf course and it is a nice hike, not to challenging, but it is an out and back so leave time to get back. Total with pictures you should be able to do in roughly two hours.

Is it possible to get here using public transport? We’re not hiring a car whilst here.
If getting a taxi, any idea how far and how much? Thanks

The bus that runs along Geary St. is a good way to go. It is an East/West direction. Almost all of the North/South running buses cross Geary. No problem. Take the Geary bus West and get off at the end of the line. The Lands End walk is very beautiful. Fantastic view of Seal Rock, forest, the entrance to San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, and green, green Marin County. Be very careful around the cliffs. Can be very dangerous. We loose a few tourists each year. But if you use caution it is a great place to be. I am going there myself on the 5th. Enjoy.

I’m trying to figure out how far of a walk it is from Lands End to Golden Gate Park. Looks like maybe 4 miles. Has anyone walked it and know how far it is? We love to walk and 4-6 miles is
Doable for us.

Good Evening Karen, I am thinking that the walk from the main parking lot for Land's End to the California Academy of Science in Golden Gate State Park is just about 4 miles and will probably take about two hours at a leisurely stroll. It could take a bit longer depending on how much sightseeing you do along the way. It is downhill to the beach and a minor steady climb going back to the east. You will climb about 250 feet over three miles which really is nothing. You have oceans, Windmills, Bison, Tea Gardens and more along the way to contend with your attention. I guess you could walk back to Land's End, or catch a cab for a nominal fee. Check maps for buses if you have a day pass. The walking route will be well worth your time and the sights you will see are very nice. I hope you do it and enjoy the experience. Cheers.
What time should we get to Land's End to avoid too many initial crowds and ensure a good parking spot?

I plan to cover lands end & baker beach (walking). Can someone suggest a safe & doable trail. What points should i cover here?
Thanks

Lake Mary, FL106 contributions
The California Coastal Trail goes from the Cliff House and Sutro Baths at Land's End all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge. It does pass by Baker Beach, so you take take it to go there, or you can go all the way to the bridge, which is around 9 miles away. Baker Beach is probably around half that distance, so you will have to walk 4 to 5 miles to go from Land's End to Baker Beach.
