About
At the northwestern corner of San Francisco, there is a series of stunning views at every turn in this wild and windy trail. Hillsides of cypress and wildflowers, views of shipwrecks and access to the ruins of Sutro baths, a San Francisco specials memory.

I've loved this remote part of the city since I lived not far away during my grad school days. Where else can you view the Golden Gate, passing ships, inquisitive sea birds, yet feel you're the only one present?
I stay over at Seal Rock Inn, at the other end of the path, and often make the hike early in the day. It's something I love, and miss, which is why I return again and again.

Do yourself a favor and take the Geary bus from Union Square out to Lands End, There, walk a couple of blocks down along the seacoast. Eat at Cliff House, if you can (reservations required in the downstairs restaurant). Or just enjoy the view. A delightful respite from the mass tourism at Pier 39.

views were fantastic. other hikers on trail, labyrinth in maps was destroyed by waves or humans but the view from the cliff above it was spectacular. went with 5 and 6 year old boys and it had just enough adventure for them. There are steps up/down in places.
We uber'd to the start where there were bathrooms. take your own water with you. we continued on down a total of 5.4 miles to the golden gate bridge, linking with another park including a stroll along the beach. It was nice to have one long trip vs having to circle back on another less breathtaking trail.

Firstly, parking at Lands End Car Park is ÂŁ7. To avoid this, when we were 1 mile drive away, we kept an eye out for spaces to park up on the side of the road. Noticed quite a few others cars had done this as well, avoided parking charges and walked 15 minutes to Lands End. For most of the walk there is no pavement so be careful if you have young children.
Secondly, Lands End has great views and fun activities for children. However very commercialised and felt like a small theme park. Many cafes and toilets, play area for children. Otherwise overrated.

Go here for a gentle hike that takes you to a vista outside of the Golden Gate where you can take amazing pictures. The trail can be a little muddy, but it's definitely worth it. It takes about 15 minutes to get to the best viewing spots. You can also hike down to the water. An unexpected areas of calm in a busy city.

This moderate hike lines the northwest corner of San Francisco. You can hike in from either the east or the west entrance and loop around to your starting point. This well developed path hugs the coast, offering stunning views of the Golden Gate and Marin Headlands. We were there on a spectacularly sunny day. That said, it being December and there being a brisk wind, we had to bundle up. (The same could probably be said for any San Francisco summer day!) The trail one way is 1.7 miles, so it's around a 3 mile hike. There is some elevation gain and loss, most of helped by steps. If you want a decidedly un-urban hike in the City, head to Lands End.

What a wonderful National Park. The visitor center is very nice with a cafe as well as a gift shop. The views are beautiful from outside the visitor center as well as the lower area near the Sutros Baths Ruins and the upper trails. This place had a lot more to see than what I was expecting. There is a good sized parking lot (free) next to the visitor center. Highly recommended.

Beautiful park and trails. Awesome views of the ocean, Golden Gate Bridge, and site of the old Sutro Baths. There is also the small beach area by the bath site. And more on the other side past the USS SF Memorial.
Overall the whole park area was great and very enjoyable (peaceful).
Note it is very busy and parking can be real difficult to find.

You can park at Lands End, walk along the coast to the Golden Gate Bridge. It is the best hike and outdoor walking activity in the SF - this is my #1 favorite running route in the US... Dress warm, even if it is sunny because SF is always colder than it seems, no matter if it is in the middle of summer.

The trail wasn't too difficult and was well-maintained. The views were really nice, but it can get very windy! Easy parking, but far from downtown SF (uber was ~22 from Ferry Bldg). There are definitely areas closer to Golden Gate Bridge - if you're looking for that perfect photo, this might not be the spot. That said, it was great to feel like I was in nature instead of the middle of a city.

Is this trail mostly flat? How difficult is it?
Cathy H
Gold Coast, Australia171 contributions
The trail is packed crushed gravel and very easy to walk on.
It is flat and wide, easy to use prams and bikes on.
If you want to descend to the coast line there are wide stairs at all the vista spots, you would need to carry bikes and prams down. Approx 150+ stairs but the views are amazing and worth the extra effort. The tracks down at the bottom are more eroded but easy to manage if you have a helper. This is an excellent day out, so much to see. Take a jacket and start, if it’s windy or overcast or foggy it will be really cold. It was a glorious sunny day for us, we were so lucky. Hope you have a great day also. I rate this hiking trail 10/10

Can you hike Lands End after sunrise but before 9am if you don’t need to park a car?
How long is the trail?
Is it a circle or can you start and finish in different places ?
How long should you allow to hike and see Land End?

Yes, you can start your hike before 9am at Sunrise. We started by the muni golf course and it is a nice hike, not to challenging, but it is an out and back so leave time to get back. Total with pictures you should be able to do in roughly two hours.

Is it possible to get here using public transport? We’re not hiring a car whilst here.
If getting a taxi, any idea how far and how much? Thanks

The bus that runs along Geary St. is a good way to go. It is an East/West direction. Almost all of the North/South running buses cross Geary. No problem. Take the Geary bus West and get off at the end of the line. The Lands End walk is very beautiful. Fantastic view of Seal Rock, forest, the entrance to San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge, and green, green Marin County. Be very careful around the cliffs. Can be very dangerous. We loose a few tourists each year. But if you use caution it is a great place to be. I am going there myself on the 5th. Enjoy.

I’m trying to figure out how far of a walk it is from Lands End to Golden Gate Park. Looks like maybe 4 miles. Has anyone walked it and know how far it is? We love to walk and 4-6 miles is
Doable for us.

Good Evening Karen, I am thinking that the walk from the main parking lot for Land's End to the California Academy of Science in Golden Gate State Park is just about 4 miles and will probably take about two hours at a leisurely stroll. It could take a bit longer depending on how much sightseeing you do along the way. It is downhill to the beach and a minor steady climb going back to the east. You will climb about 250 feet over three miles which really is nothing. You have oceans, Windmills, Bison, Tea Gardens and more along the way to contend with your attention. I guess you could walk back to Land's End, or catch a cab for a nominal fee. Check maps for buses if you have a day pass. The walking route will be well worth your time and the sights you will see are very nice. I hope you do it and enjoy the experience. Cheers.
What time should we get to Land's End to avoid too many initial crowds and ensure a good parking spot?

I plan to cover lands end & baker beach (walking). Can someone suggest a safe & doable trail. What points should i cover here?
Thanks

The California Coastal Trail goes from the Cliff House and Sutro Baths at Land's End all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge. It does pass by Baker Beach, so you take take it to go there, or you can go all the way to the bridge, which is around 9 miles away. Baker Beach is probably around half that distance, so you will have to walk 4 to 5 miles to go from Land's End to Baker Beach.
