LAKE MICHIGAN CREDIT UNION - 19 Reviews - Banks & Credit Unions - 3809 Lk Eastbrook Blvd SE, Grand Rapids, MI - Phone Number
One time I went to the CU to deposit my paycheck, the teller made me wait while they called their manager for approval to deposit my check because of the amount of money it was ($600) and they wanted to make sure it wasn't a forged check. It was ridiculous because the check was not big, and I had been working at that job for several years and have been receiving paychecks that size for quite some time. A simple look at my account history would show that I had been depositing checks that size from the same company every two weeks.
Another bad experience that I had was when they took $600 out of my checking account because my mother owed them money. It was a joint account my mother opened when I was young. Yes they did have every legal right to take the money, since the account was also in her name, but ethically it was wrong. Any look at the account activity and you could clearly see that all of the money was mine, and that my mother not done anything with the account in years (confirmed when the teller at the bank told me that it was obvious that all the money was mine.) In fact we had forgotten that she was still on the account and thought that she had already removed herself when I turned 18. The biggest thing that angered me about this was that they tried to use the money they took from me as a bargaining chip to get my mother to go to the CU and talk to them. The teller informed me that if I got my mother to go to the CU and talk to them, that they would deposit the money back in my account. The fact that they used my money as a bargaining chip, and offered to put it back into my account if my mother talked to them made me extremely angry. Clearly the CU knew that the money was mine, and only took it in hopes my mother would go talk to them.
The third and final straw with this CU was when I had forgotten about a check to the dentist that I wrote, and ended up overdrawing my account because I forgot about the check to the dentist. The CU has what they call a "Courtesy Fee Program" in which if you try to use your debit card as a credit card, and there are not the funds in your account, instead of the card getting declined, the card will be approved and the CU will cover the charge and give you 31 days to place the money in your account (leaving you with a negative balance.) They also charge you a $30 "Courtesy Fee" every time you overdraw your account. You have to opt-In for this service (supposedly.) The CU charged me 6 of these "Courtesy Fee" when I overdrew my account, because I had forgotten about the check to the dentist. There were two problems with this:
A) I never opted-In for this service B) Four of the charges that supposedly "overdrew" my checking account were in fact covered by the amount of money remaining in my checking account.
I went to the CU to see why I was charged four of these "Courtesy Fees" when I had enough money in my account to cover the charges, and to also see why my card was not declined when there were no funds.
First I asked why my card had not been declined if there was not funds in my account to cover the purchases. The representative told me that I had opted-In to this service and that was why the card was not declined. I specifically asked her if I would have had to opt-In to the service initially, or if everyone was in the service and you had to opt-out of the service, and I was told that you had to opt-in. I told the representative that I had never opted-in for this service, and that I never would have opted-in for this service. I would rather have my transaction declined than to pay a $30 fee.
Second I asked why each transaction that I had made that earned the "Courtesy Fee" was charged a "Courtesy Fee." She explained the process to me (which I already knew) and explained that the order that the charges show up on my statement is not necessarily the order in which the transaction was posted to my account (which I also already knew.) What it came down to was that I had several smaller purchases from different merchants adding up to approximately $45, and there was only approximately $40 in my checking account. She explained that when these merchants ran their transaction, that there was not money in the account to cover the amount owed to them, so the CU had to cover the charges, and that was why I was charged the fee. I pointed out that it did not matter what order the charges were posted to my account, because you could add up any 3 of the transactions that received a "Courtesy Fee" and there would have been enough money in my account to cover those costs. Because of this there were at least 3 fees that should not have been there. She told me that everything was correct, and that the fees were in fact legitimate (which they were not.) After arguing for a while I finally managed to get them to refund 3 of the 6 fees.
It boils down to this CU doing things shady, and I would not recommend them to anyone because of it.
We've made a huge mistake to apply and try to get a mortgage loan from them. Don't be fooled by their lower rates, that's only because they cant provide you with anything they're supposed to. We had to constantly run after them (David Rodriguez to be exact) to get updates (that's only if they respond to you) and after 60 days, we still can't close because the numbers are not correct. What a mess!
Warning to those considering LMCU for financing a mortgage: reconsider! LMCU has singlehandedly and carelessly destroyed our carefully coordinated plans for moving & closing. When we started the mortgage process, we had a closing date of 5/13. This did not change, until LMCU dropped the ball. We coordinated a number of services on day of close to be done prior to our movers bringing our belongings: cable and internet hookup, someone to run a gas line for gas stove, delivery and installation of 3 appliances, and someone to drill a hole for water filtration system in our granite countertops. The morning after close, we coordinated our movers. 36 hours before our appointment to close, LMCU informed our realtor that we'd have to push back the date of closing, by one day. To add insult to injury, our LMCU loan officer didn't even notify us, our realtor had to. LMCU then had the audacity to expect us to pay $175 for a notary to meet us to finalize the closing in another location since they changed the closing date 36 hours before our appointment. My husband and I have been members at LMCU for 5 years, and this is our second mortgage with them. We expected more. We will NEVER entrust our stability and plans with LMCU again, nor will we trust LMCU with our money or our livelihood moving forward. Their core philosophy: "It has always been about doing what's best and right for our members. It guides everything we do." It is evident on upon our recent interaction, that this is on no way, the philosophy by which they do business; and if I'd known how little they would care about the impact his has on our situation, the lack of respect to even communicate it to us directly, and the refusal to assume any responsibility for the cost of the notary, we would have looked elsewhere. Consider yourselves warned.
Customer service is horrible with online bill pay. Would not recommend LMCU. I have been with them since 2015 and am ready to change banks. I've had enough of poor customer service. I have been on hold for 30 minutes. Tried a chat, but my banking session timed out before I could get my answer since they spent 15 minutes verifying my identity. Crazy.
Current member: Horrible communication and honestly no help no matter who you talk to. They locked my card because an out of state fraudulent transaction, had no decency to call, email, or anything to let me know. My card wasnt working so I called and when they made me aware of the situation they sent a new card. So at this point I can't pay any of my bills and no money to get to work. Now today, EIGHT days after me calling I still have no card! I called again and she said it had been delivered which I know it was not delivered to me because I have been checking my mailbox religiously. AGAIN, another 3-4 days till I get my card, if I ever do. Not the first issue I've had regarding my account here, but it will be the last! I'd give 0 stars if I could.
DO NOT USE THEM ! I wish I would of looked up reviews on them before getting the mortgage process started with them, they leave you in the dark and never respond to you emails, calls, texts. They take FOREVER with thete closing process, before we started they said 30 days and its been almost 50! I still haven't closed and its driving me insane. Seriously I NEVER write reviews but this bothered me so much I have to keep everyone away!
My mother wanted a low interest rate card from here and applied with a 826 credit score. However, after the underwriter received her DL all of a sudden she was denied. We are talking about someone with excellent credit across all three credit bureaus and has higher limit credit cards. I'm writing this review because now it seems as if the credit unions are arbitrarily denying people with great credit histories. I would not dare go through a creditunion nowadays, who runs your credit and still requests several personal documents only for the underwriter to pick and choose. Never been denied with big credit card companies! I just think it sucks because back in the day the credit unions were the ones to go to but now they are worst than the big banks. No thank you LakeMichiganCreditUnion!!!
We'd found their high-rate Money Market account and since they bought a bank in Lee County FL, we qualified as members. We wanted the account to simply be a savings account and planned no meaningful activity or withdrawals. I'd planned to deposit two checks 'on them' from a family friend who is a customer of the bank they bought.
I initially phoned the branch on Bonita Beach and spoke to someone who had poor English skills and couldn't answer a single question. So I then phoned Michigan to get info and was told they'd love to have us. I explained there was an old bankruptcy and was told as long as it has been discharged, it isn't a problem. (Remember - this is for a deposit account, NOT a loan.) I went through the lengthy application process. Two weeks later, still nothing from them. I phoned and they requested photos of our ID, SS cards front and back, which I sent. They said they'd have everything done in a few days. Then nothing AGAIN. I finally phoned and they said they'd "give me a decision" the next day. Decision? It's a DEPOSIT ACCOUNT. BTW, we've NEVER EVER bounced a check.
They dinged my credit report. Then they declined opening the account. Then I found that their advertised rate isn't really as it seems. It is only on the first $15,000 and I was going to put $30,000 in the bank.
Now? I'd never ever do business with these people. They lost $30,000 in deposits when I deposited the two checks 'on them' into the Capital One 360 account I opened in 5 minutes!!! AND Capital One was paying a cash bonus of $200 on top of their interest rate which is really good.
Don't waste your time with these no-service people.
Horrible communication, horrible customer service. We used LMCU to buy a house, they were great when we were making offers and shopping around but after our offer was accepted things changed. The entire closing process was a nightmare. One person would ask us one thing and then the next day some one else would call us for the same information. When we would ask questions it would take days to answer them, they prolonged our closing process by several weeks due to their poor communication. It was terrible, but we felt like we had no choice but to proceed as changing lenders would only prolong the process even more. On top of all that when all things were said and done, we signed the dotted line and bought our house they immediately sold our mortgage to a large loan servicer before our first mortgage payment was even due. We chose a creditunion because we wanted a better home buying experience, and better customer service. We are closing all of our accounts with LMCU and never doing business with them again. If I could give them less then 1 star I would.
Loaners beware, I am very dissatisfied with the treatment I have received from lmcu. I called and was told that because I was dealing with a dealership that was affiliated with them that I could do my loan through them and that was a bunch of bull, found out that the dealership came back to tell me that my would be treated like I was a green horn new car buyer. I told them I was a member of this c.u for over 40 years My loan would be charged 13.5% . The thing that pisses me off the most is I always have made all my bills on time and to get treated like this is bulls#@t.Ok I go to the lmcu Corp office to seek a answer , they come up some one will call you . I get some crap about you kept your nose clean paid your bills off but they go 3 credit bureau's and you've had no loans for a couple of years and they see that you have to be charged extra percentage because of this crock of*&^%. What happened to knowing your customers and checking your history of your past loans that had with for the past 40 years. Well I went to one of the mill of banks out there and got a loan for a 4.2% and this bulls%^@ paid off before they could get a dime extra that they had not did anything to get it. Really makes me think if I should keep my other money's there. I have to tell you I very dissatisfied the way the have fallen into kind of business tactics. So just beware!!!!!!!!
