Getting Political

SEPTEMBER 2010 - At the 2010 MTV VMA Awards, Gaga scooped eight awards and accepted one of them wearing a dress (and boots and clutch) made entirely from meat. SEE ALL THE MTV VMA AWARDS PHOTOSPA Photos

LADY GAGA'S meat dress was a powerful political statement, rather than just another attention-grabbing outfit. The star says the look referred to a speech she made, The Prime Rib of America, which urged the US military not to discriminate against gay men and lesbians from serving in the army. She says that the law prevents the military from enjoying "the greatest cut of meat my country has to offer".

"You saw the prime rib of America speech so you knew it was about equality, but nobody else knew that," she told Stephen Fry in an interview for the Financial Times. "Everyone just saw pork. It wasn't pork! It was prime rib and plain steak."

The star may officially be the world's most powerful celebrity (according to the Forbes 2011 Power List), but financial gain is still low on her priority list.

"The only big things I've purchased are my dad's heart valve and a Rolls-Royce for my parents, for their anniversary," she said."And that was only because my dad had a Lady Gaga licence plate on our old car and it was making me crazy because he was getting followed everywhere, so I bought him a new car. Other than that I put everything in the show, and I actually went bankrupt after the first extension of The Monster Ball. And it was funny because I didn't know! And I remember I called everybody and said, 'Why is everyone saying I have no money?' This is ridiculous, I have five number one singles - and they said, 'Well, you're $3m in debt.'"
