Vegetarians and vegans, this is your official warning to look away. Turn back and clear your history, taking your veggie-fuelled selves away from this particularly meaty corner of the internet.

We’re going all the way back to 2010, when Lady Gaga was an everyday performance artist (rather than the nouveau-pop art goddess she is today). The performance piece to be dissected in this article? Her famous meat dress. The meat dress had much acclaim and was one of the wildest Gaga fashion pieces we’d seen. It gave many of us a very visceral reaction and was one of the biggest talking points for those tabloid articles that are always looking for celebrity attention-grabs.

What The Heck Was It All About?

The meat dress, however, was anything but an attention grab. It was an attention-grabbing piece, yes, but it wasn’t just done to turn heads. Lady Gaga was put on blast by PETA, but she defended herself to Ellen DeGeneres, and the ideology behind the meat dress was actually pretty sound. She explains that the meat dress is "certainly no disrespect to anyone that's vegan or vegetarian… As you know, I'm the most judgment-free human being on Earth. It has many interpretations, but for me this evening it's [saying], 'If we don't stand up for what we believe in, if we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.'”

Lady Gaga is one of the big queens of LGBTQ+ activism and fundraising, as many of us have seen time and time again over the years. While she’s certainly not free from scrutiny (or slip-ups), she does have a good head on her shoulders and knows how to make a statement. She's passionate about standing up for people, and for raising both funds and awareness; and she's very happy to lend her voice to movements.

The meat dress was yet another awareness/statement piece, which means its message is as brilliant as the design of this dress. And we personally love it, even more, knowing that that’s the message behind it. Okay, okay, we know: it’s all well and good that the dress is literally a statement piece, but how much is it actually worth?

Drumroll (Or Drumstick) Please…

A copy of Lady Gaga’s dress was created by a steakhouse, and they asked $100,000 for it. In case you’re worried that they’re just trying to capitalize on a long-ago trend, don’t worry, the dress they offered was a full-meal deal. “The dress is made of USDA prime, dry-aged sirloin, porterhouse, rib-eye and Kobe steaks. No costume is complete without accessories. It comes with designer trick-or-treat handbags filled with filet mignon and chocolate sauce, 40 ounce porterhouse steaks with candy corn, Kobe beef steaks and Kobe burgers, and a replica of a VMA trophy.”

Long story short is that we don’t actually know how much Lady Gaga’s meat dress is worth today. Shortly after it was worn they preserved it by turning it into a kind of super jerky. It’s been on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for years, and likely still is. Often the stuff that’s in there is considered priceless and irreplaceable. Also, who seriously would want to buy a dress made of formaldehyde-soaked jerky? They’d have to pay us to take it off their hands.
