La Jolla Cove Hotel delights numerous guests with its exceptional location close to the ocean and local attractions, though opinions on the hotel diverge significantly. While some visitors commend the modernity and cleanliness of the renovated rooms, others are less impressed with the outdated ones, citing concerns over cleanliness and maintenance. The rooftop amenities are often a hit, but the hotel's overall value is questioned due to high costs and additional fees. Service quality varies, with reports of both commendable staff and issues with responsiveness.

We liked the hotel location and our room. There was MUCH construction going on in the hotel, on the grounds, across the street and in the neighborhood. Temporary issue, though. We stayed in the new Pines Building and loved it. It is clean and modern with some great ocean views. Check-in was easy, and the friendly front desk young lady even let us into our room two hours before the 4 p.m. check-in time. Our room, #204, directly faced, besides the ocean, a public restroom with showers that was being built.

We had a roomy balcony, two comfy queen beds, chair and reading lamp, desk with chair, flat screen TV, small fridge, full length mirror, closet with drawers, a safe, and iron/ ironing board. There was perimeter and sconce lighting and a clock with USB ports. No coffeepot or glasses are provided. The bathroom was bright with a glassed in shower which had only an overhead, movable rain showerhead. White fluffy bathrobes and towels are provided, along with shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, Q-tips and cotton balls and a dark washcloth for removing makeup.

We liked this hotel in spite of its temporary issues. It is clean, the desk clerks are friendly, and the location is good for staying in La Jolla near the ocean. Right across the street is a park and a nice coastal trail with paths down to sea caves and lots and lots of sea lions! Note that there is a $25 parking fee and also a refundable $50 fee added to the reservation.

We stayed four nights. Loved the location, the suite, and our patio up to day four and night. The suite was great, with mini kitchen area with fridge and microwave in main bedroom, bathroom and large closet, and the 2nd bedroom was very spacious too with large closet. The patio overlooked the park and ocean, and we spent most of our room time out there when we weren't shopping or dining nearby. On Day 4, about 8pm, power went out in my bedroom. I called down to the desk, was told someone would flip the breaker. This issue was never resolved, and I told the desk when we checked out, and then told a maintenance man about it as we were walking to the car to leave. Between midnight through 2am, the new arrivals to our left we're arguing loudly and slamming drawers and their room door. We got little sleep due to the noise. We called the desk and reported the noise. There is also a huge upper deck on level 5 with an amazing view of the entire cove area. We weren't up to climbing all of the steps needed to use the pool and spa so cannot report on those. Without issues, this would be a 4.5 rating.

Located directly opposite La Jolla Cove Beach, this hotel is a relatively short (but uphill) walk to the galleries, boutiques and restaurants of La Jolla Village. NOTE that the published room rate does not include a nightly parking fee, which is a common practice at the major La Jolla and San Diego hotels. My wife and I stayed here for two nights during the latter part of September 2021. Our stay was a study of contrasts, which is easiest to summarize in a list of pros and cons.

PROS: 1) The views from both our ocean front room and the rooftop deck were fabulous. 2) All the appliances and the air conditioning in our room worked properly. 3) Our bed was very comfortable. 4) The staff (both front desk and housekeeping) was extremely friendly and helpful. 4) The hotel’s proximity to La Jolla Cove is unmatched; it’s literally across the street. 5) The room rate, compared to other adjacent hotels, was a relative bargain.

This is an older hotel, and there were some CONS: 1) Our room design was highly dated, although to be fair it looked like they were in the midst of updates and renovations. For example, it seemed that they were removing the popcorn ceiling in our room but hadn’t completed the job yet. 2) The bathroom was quite small with very little counter space. 3) The toilet was equipped with an industrial-style flush (like you’d find in a public restroom), which was efficient but quite loud. We heard the flushing from our neighbors next to and above us very clearly. 4) Aside from the bed, the furniture was pretty cheap and uncomfortable; we would have spent more time on our balcony had it not been for the stiff and rigid chairs. 5) Speaking of the balcony, the railing was in very poor repair. 6) The hotel’s only elevator was laughably slow; we ended up only using it when transporting our luggage, otherwise we used the stairs.

This all bears the question, would we stay at the La Jolla Cove Hotel and Suites again? To us, the combination of the price, the view, the convenience and the excellent staff ultimately outweighed the property’s deficiencies and lack of luxury, so our answer would be yes.

Love this hotel - Christina (front desk) took great care of us! We had a very nice room with a balcony, and a lovely view of the park and ocean. They also have an amazing rooftop deck with fire pits and spectacular views (perfect for watching the sunset with a glass of wine), and a nice pool... we definitely stay here again!

Waking up to a view of the ocean is hard to beat. This hotel is undergoing extensive renovations, however my large unupgraded room was great. Balcony overlooking the park and coastline, extremely clean with lovely bedding. The bathroom, with a tub/shower is tight, full range of toiletries provided. Mini fridge and microwave can cut down on dining expenses. There is a grocery store a few blocks up in the village. Breakfast can be ordered to your room, good and reasonably priced. App deliveries allow you to enjoy famous cuisine on your balcony.
Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. Due to renovations, is is not quiet during the day,
I was out most of the day so it was not an issue. The pool and hot tub are only accessible via stairs. Rooftop offers great views. The location is at the bottom of the hill, it is a steep walk up to the village. Conversely, you walk out the front door to the park and sea. Great people, seal, sea lion and pelican watching.

This was by far the worst experience I've had at a hotel. I will summarize my experience in three main issues we faced.
1) Not honoring agreed upon charges: Upon arrival of a 3 night stay (which was paid for in advance) I inquired about an upgrade to an ocean view room. I was told that it would be a $30 charge to upgrade each night however they could only guarantee two out of three nights as one of the nights the hotel was booked. The front desk stated they would charge my card for the upgrade for three nights and will refund the last night if a room doesn't become available. A room opened up for my last night however when the manager (Cody) called me he stated they will not honor the $30 upgrade and I would need to pay an additional $140 to stay in the room the last night. The amount he was charging me was well beyond the agreed rate my company had with this establishment. No one could answer why my card was charged in the first place for the upgrade for the 3rd night if that was inaccurate pricing.
2) Room quality: night one when we arrived the air conditioner broke and water was all over the floor. The hotel's solution was to provide towels to put on the floor to try and absorb the water. The floor smelled and was wet, it was gross. We had maintenance in and out of our room and issues with the air conditioner for the following 24 hours.
3) Customer Service: Cody (the manager) was terrible. He refused to listen to the sequence of events and honor what the hotel had already agreed to. I admit I became frustrated and did use one cuss word to describe the room and said "I've had so many problems with this f*cking room" the moment I said that, he responded saying "that's it, you're out of here" and told me to leave the hotel and he would refund the charge on my card for the last night.

In ALL my life I have never experienced such poor customer service and refusal to honor agreed upon terms, so much so that this is my first trip advisor review to warn others about this hotel to avoid future experiences like mine.

We arrive shortly before 4pm and we’re checked in quickly and efficiently. We got our baggage up to the room and immediately walked into a wall that separates the two rooms, very snuggly allowing us to enter the room. (No problem, we get it, we are by the beach, things are smaller)
We set our baggage down and started to take in our accommodations for the next two nights but could not imagine staying here.
Very loud Music was blaring from the next wing of the hotel, the walls are very thing and the windows are also. It had so much bass that the windows were rattling and we knew there was no way this would be our peaceful getaway.
The view is gorgeous but we could not even enjoy it over the loud house music coming from the patio next door.
We immediately grabbed our bags and went back to reception and were checked out just as fast as we were checked in. (Hence why they got that extra star)
They were pleasant and understanding and even offered to find us other accommodations in the area, which I thought was awesome.
After driving 2.5 hours, we were hungry, tired and after this disappointment, we just decided to go home.
There was rust on the microwave, chipped paint on the bed frame, very thin windows that rattle with every step and the loud music from the neighbors (should not allow boomboxes on your property) neighbors were also loudly cursing. This was all in the 5 minutes we were in the room!
As we left the room to get into the elevator, one of the housekeepers pushing a linen cart had his music on his person, it was also playing explicit lyrics! Really?
The good news is, we got our money back. The bad news it, we lost 6 hours and the cost of travel.

I came here with my 10 year old for a weekend away. There was nothing else available so, I booked here. We booked an ocean view room on the weekend which was over $500 a night , about $1350 total. For that , I would have thought there would be a few complementary breakfast muffins left out for guests . They have coffee but that’s it. Motel 6 has complimentary muffins when I was last there .

This is called “ the Pines” and it’s the newer version of La Jolla cove hotel. That part, is next door, and under construction and looks like a haunted , abandoned hotel- don’t stay there .It gives off “ The Shining “ vibes.

When you stay in the newer section, you will still feel like it’s an abandoned hotel, cause there’s no one around, one person working ? , only it’s nicer looking.

I asked the man at the front desk a recommendation for a kid friendly place to eat and he said “ this isn’t a kid friendly town. It’s more luxury “. What kind of recommendation is that? Strange. The friendliest person who worked there was a housekeeping worker who was helpful in answering questions I had .

The roof top has a great view , but since it had rained and no one had thought to put the furniture under the covering, it was too wet to sit on. If it wasn’t, I would have hung out there and booked a cheaper room without an ocean view.

The pool and hot tub look like they haven’t been cleaned in awhile. The elevator doesn’t work in the Pines so you have to go to the old hotel, and use that. That’s not a big deal but rather just another annoyance since the place is disappointing.

The only redeeming quality this place has is the location. It’s across the street from the ocean and public bathrooms.

La Jolla is expensive but you can go somewhere much better for the same price . I would not stay here again.

I have stayed here on 3 different occasions with the first time coming with my husband and stayed in a cute, quaint and affordable room and enjoyed it so much we decided to return within a month with our 2 children since they were still offeeing winter savings. I really appreciate that there are quite a few different styles of rooms depending on your budget and needs. We booked room 800 that has a king and queen bed in a split studio. Super spacey with a HUGE patio that overlooks the hotel in the direction of the ocean. Gorgeous view! Mini fridge and microwave included in this room but I believe some units have kitchenettes, (or maybe some with nothing at all!) Two great decks, one overlooking the ocean and the other has a swimming pool/jacuzzi (which was not heated when we were there, but not freezing either lol), 2 billiards tables and a pingpong table. The stairway getting to our room is quite the workout but I've learned that La Jolla sometimes requires a good amount of steps, a tolerance to the fishy sea air and the sound of sea lions barking well into the night. I love it though!!
Staff was available if anything was needed, parking is available for an additional charge and covid protocols seemed to be in effect.
Can't wait to return!

I'm disappointed in the information received directly from the hotel as before I booked noticed several photos with major construction work going on. They assured me the work was just about done except for finishing up their new rooftop lounge area. Due to the tremendous location on the cove decided to book a room as we don't live in the room anyway, thought we would not be around for the noise of the day. True enough, no issue there, but if they are just about done, then it's interior work only as the outside of the older part of the hotel is in desperate need of freshening. The pink color is faded, and is drab and unappealing. The location of the pool and hot tub is also very odd. It's behind the parking lot, elevated with no easy way to access. As it turns out, we never bothered checking it out. Ok, end of the major negatives. We didn't see the original room we booked (in the older section) as they put us in the new Pines section instead. We were very pleased with this change as the Pines building is quite nice. The main oddity is the lighting system. The controls were not exactly intuitive and I've traveled on multiple continents so have seen a few different systems in my time. Don't understand why the system was chosen over simpler switches, but we eventually got the hang of them. Will say the evening lights created a warm, inviting ambience to the room and we had a 6th floor king room with a balcony overlooking the cove. The views of the cove were fantastic so this lived up to expectations. The bed was comfortable with multiple pillow options. Rainwater showerhead worked well (good water pressure) and there was plenty of closet and storage space. As we're near sea level there is some uphill walking to do to get to shops and restaurants so be mindful if you don't care for that sort of thing. It didn't bother us, we walked to Mt. Soledad and back so can get around. The sea lions can be noisy at any time but the balcony door closed tightly and did a nice job of soundproofing the room at night if needed.

Hi, I’m not the most familiar with the Cove building but the Pines building(newest) has ocean front views. I would recommend staying there since it’s the most updated and very beautiful! Hope that helps!

I believe one is slightly bigger with the bed being in a separate room and a small living area with couch and tv and the signature king is just a room with a king size bed only. Whatever you get ask to be on the remodeled side only. You do not want to be on the side that hasn’t been renovated yet. Remodeled side are beautiful, plush and everything you see in pics. The not yet remodeled side is like a run down crack house inside

We stayed in room 326 and had a very good view of the ocean from the balcony. You'd no doubt get an even better view from a higher floor.
