Rangers ace Cyriel Dessers hailed as ‘superb’ as Kyogo Furuhashi comparison made

Alan Rough has praised Cyriel Dessers’s scoring tally this season, comparing how it is better than that of Celtic’s Kyogo Furuhashi.

Dessers took his tally to 19 in all competitions since arriving from Cremonese in the summer by scoring both goals in Rangers’ 2-0 win over Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park on Sunday (21 April).

Despite closing in on 20 goals for the campaign, Dessers has come in for much criticism this season with pundits suggesting he misses too many clear-cut chances.

But former Scotland goalkeeper Rough, speaking on the PLZ Soccer Football Show (23 April), defender Dessers’ record, pointing out he has more than the 16 goals scored by Hoops forward Kyogo.

“He’s one of these strikers that has chances and doesn’t take them, but 19 goals is a fair old [return], I don’t think Celtic have anyone up on 19. Kyogo is around about 14,” Rough stated.

Rough, who represented Celtic during his playing career, had more praise for the Rangers frontman, saying: “The first goal at the weekend was superb, to have that confidence in a semi-final, to roll it and wait for the defender to come in and then slot it shows you a bit of class.”

Is Cyriel Dessers the man to stick with up front for Rangers?

Dessers has come in for plenty of criticism from Rangers supporters, especially after squandering a huge opportunity in their 3-2 defeat to Ross County recently.

Many have called for the club to go all in to sign Hearts’ Lawrence Shankland in the summer, as he remains top of the scoring charts in the Scottish Premiership.

However, despite not starting every week, Dessers has still amassed an impressive tally this season, with only Shankland, James Tavernier and Bojan Miovski on more goals in the league.

The Nigeria international certainly showed more composure compared to fellow attacker Fabio Silva, who came under fire for his cameo appearance and wasted opportunity at the end of the semi-final on Sunday, falling over with the goal at his mercy late on.

A double from Dessers means he is set to start up front for Rangers as the first round of fixtures since the Premiership split sees Philippe Clement’s side travel to Paisley to face St. Mirren on Sunday (28 April).

In other Rangers news, the club have been linked with the young Aberdeen star who is also attracting interest from Celtic.
