Summary

  • Skull Island's season 2 scripts have officially been completed.
  • The show has not yet been greenlit for season 2, yet the scripts are finished all the same.
  • Executive producer Brian Duffield is not confident that the next season will ever be confirmed.

Netflix's Skull Island season 2 scripts are finally completed. Released several months before the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters show, Skull Island is the first TV show in Legendary's Monsterverse. It is an animated adventure set in the 1990s and explores the friendship between a few young heroes who are desperately trying to survive on Kong's island. Season 1 features Kong facing off against a mighty kraken and saving humans along the way.

Skull Island's complicated ending did not completely conclude the stories of its characters, but the show has not yet been greenlit for season 2. Still, executive producer Brian Duffield has a major update about the production. According to an update on his Twitter account, Duffield has completely finished the scripts. Unfortunately, he is not confident that the show will be greenlit and has elected to view the development positively all the same. Check out his quote below:

Scripts are all done and I hope it sees the light at some point - think we got unlucky with timing and story changes in the bigger 'Verse. But I had a great time, which is all that matters.

Will Skull Island Get A Season 2?

Skull Island May Struggle To Be Renewed

There is still a chance that Skull Island will be renewed for season 2, but it will depend on Netflix and the effects of the other Monsterverse projects. Every Monsterverse movie and show has strong implications for the future of the franchise. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire rewrote Kong's conception of his backstory, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters established Monarch's origins as happening around the same time as Skull Island's story. The various timeline changes have undoubtedly had some effect on the Skull Island season 2 scripts, as the show has had little influence on the larger projects.

Another issue is that Skull Island is not wholly necessary to understand the wider Monsterverse. The current Monsterverse timeline has several key points of development for the Titans and Great Apes, and each coincides with a movie. Even Monarch: Legacy of Monsters plays a pivotal role in developing the universe. Skull Island is enjoyable, but it has few implications for the wider story. As a completely self-contained narrative, it may fail to draw audiences who may be interested in more essential Monsterverse content after Godzilla x Kong.

Still, the success of Skull Island is difficult to ignore. Critics gave the show an 82% score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, and the audience score is 77% positive with an average score of 4.1 out of 5. With critical and audience praise, the show can still recover and secure confirmation, should Netflix see that Godzilla x Kong's release has drawn more people to view the spin-off. With the scripts ready, Skull Island's survival depends entirely on Netflix.

Skull Island is available for streaming on Netflix.
