Godzilla may fight Kong to take Skull Island - the MonsterVerse's potential Monster Island - in Godzilla vs. Kong. The history of Skull Island and the Titans may shed some light on the real reason why the two monsters come to blows, and their fight could be directly related to Kong’s home and its place in Legendary’s monster franchise.

Directed by Adam Wingard, the fourth installment in the MonsterVerse will bring together the King of the Monsters and the King of Skull Island for an epic showdown. While their battle is raging, Monarch will be busy delving into the mystery of the Titans and where they came from. Elsewhere in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla vs. Kong’s human villains will engineer a conspiracy to put an end to all the Titans. Whatever this plan may be, it may involve Mechagodzilla. It seems plausible Godzilla and Kong will have to work together to defeat him by the end of the movie.

It’s possible that the key to the story is the Hollow Earth, a concept that was first introduced in Kong: Skull Island. It originated as a theory postulating that a network of massive tunnels exist below the surface of the Earth, where giant monsters can traverse through the planet undetected, and one of its main entry points is Skull Island. Godzilla: King of the Monsters proved the Hollow Earth theory correct when it revealed that, after getting hit with the Oxygen Destroyer, Godzilla descended down into a secret tunnel. Monarch discovered an ancient, forgotten city, whose people once worshiped Godzilla as a god, hidden in the Hollow Earth. More details were learned about this civilization through the redacted text in the King of the Monsters credits. Godzilla vs. Kong is sure to expand on the history of Skull Island and Hollow Earth; how they fit into the Titans’ past may even have something to do with why they fight.

Godzilla Fought Kong’s Ancestor

Godzilla King of the Monsters Kong Painting

The King of the Monsters credits was full of interesting reveals, with many pertaining to Kong. One in particular was an ancient cave painting that showed Godzilla and Kong fighting, which must have been witnessed by an ancient group of people in order for it to have been carved. What's interesting is that both monsters were the same size, but also, the two monsters have yet to meet. Kong was an adolescent in Kong: Skull Island, so he isn’t old enough to have a long history with Godzilla. Even so, there could be a history between Godzilla and Kong’s species.

Not much is know about Kong’s family, other than the fact that his parents were killed by the Skullcrawlers. He could have distant ancestors who encountered Godzilla thousands of years ago. After all, Godzilla has existed through several millennia, so there’s no telling how many different Titans he’s come across in his long life. A past encounter with a monster from the same bloodline as Kong isn’t difficult to imagine. What’s not clear, though, is where this battle occurred, and why they fought in the first place.

Skull Island May Be The Titans' Original Home

It’s possible Godzilla fought Kong’s ancestor because of their close proximity to each other. Now, the Titans are spread out across all continents, but in the past they could have coexisted in, around, and under one area: Skull Island. Could it be that the home of Kong is also the original home of all the Titans? Skull Island isn’t the only entry point into Hollow Earth, yet it has been confirmed that this is where Monarch’s investigation into the “origin of the Titans” will bring them. Monarch must have some reason for believing that Skull Island holds these answers.

The activities of the Titans themselves should also be taken into consideration. According to the credits, the Titans are being drawn to Skull Island. What their interest is in the island is never said, but there must be something special about this place for several of them to zero in one specific location. It could be that long ago, Skull Island was what the Titans called home. Events like the human-Titan war mentioned in the redacted text and other geological disasters could have caused them to drift apart over time. Having been woken up by King Ghidorah’s call in King of the Monsters, the Titans may have decided to return to their homeland. The problem with that is that Kong – the only living Titan on the island – may not welcome visitors. Instead of regarding them as previous residents, Kong could view them as intruders that need to be dealt with.

Godzilla And Kong Could Fight Over Skull Island

Godzilla vs. Kong gets a new image from Playmates Toys

Aside from all the details about Monarch exploring the tunnels beneath the Skull Island, there are other reasons to believe that this place important to the movie’s story. The Skrullcrawlers are included in a Godzilla vs. Kong toyline. A mechanized giant – which at this point, appears to be Mechagodzilla – was being constructed on the island. If Skull Island is one of movie’s main settings, Godzilla and Kong could have one on of their fights there. If Godzilla is among the Titans traveling to Skull Island, Kong may attack him simply because he sees him as a threat and a rival alpha in his territory, but Godzilla could have his own reasons for pursuing a fight with Kong. Suppose Godzilla has his own claim on the island. If this placed used to be the MonsterVerse’s very own Monster Island from the Toho movies, then Godzilla may believe it’s not truly Kong’s territory. For decades, its been used as the private stomping grounds for just one Titan - and Godzilla could seek to change that.

Furthermore, Godzilla living on Skull Island thousands of years ago and sharing a history with Kong’s ancestors could provide more motivation for both monsters to clash. The two may be ancestral enemies. If so, fighting could be as natural for them as it is for cats and dogs. If they fought over being the alpha of Skull Island in the past, fighting each other (even in the present day) may be an instinct that both Titans will have to follow. This would mean that Godzilla and Kong’s duel would be a result of the Titans’ very nature, rather than a misunderstanding or the machinations of the movie’s human villains. If instinct and territory are the real reasons why they clash, getting them to put aside their differences for a team-up against Mechagodzilla may not be so easy.
