Our Favorite Soak Spot in Santa Barbara, CA

There are multiple hot springs you can find within one hour of Santa Barbara. However, by far the top spot on our list is Hot Springs Canyon, also known as Montecito Hot Springs. It’s accessible, features a scenic hike, and has the best pools for soaking. Gaviota Hot Springs is another local option, however unfortunately this is more of a warm spring, and the waters here are only around 80°F. Other options include Little Caliente and Big Caliente Hot Springs, however these are quite difficult to access and require 10+ mile advanced difficulty hikes. So, if you’re going to visit one hot spring in Santa Barbara, we’d say Hot Spring Canyon is definitely your best option.

The blue hue of the waters at this spot are incredible and the color comes from bacteria (don’t worry it’s not dangerous).

About Hot Springs Canyon / Montecito Hot Springs

Montecito Hot Springs Santa Barbara

Getting to these hot springs includes an about 4 mile round trip hike of moderate difficulty. The hike is very beautiful with stunning views, lush plant life (you’ll be in the shade around 35% of the time), and a river. The hot springs are located just about half way through the hike in a canyon. Multiple pools are available for soaking, with the hottest water being located at the top and cooling as it flows down. The waters here are in fact sulfurous so be prepared for the “aroma”! But, keep in mind sulphur is actually good for you and has a lot of health benefits.

Directions to Hot Springs Canyon

  • The trail head begins at 1217 E Mountain Dr, Montecito, CA 93108

  • We recommend using this map from All Trails to help guide you.

  • Finding the hot springs can be a little tricky as they are not marked very well. At the first fork in the trail stay to your left. At the second fork, stay left again. At the third fork, stay to your right. After you pass the hotel ruins (you’ll see a sign about water conservation and begin to smell sulphur), take the left at the 4th fork in the trail. You’ll cross a small riverbed and then just a bit after this the hot springs will be off to your left.

  • Some limited street parking is available at the trailhead.
