About Knapp's Castle in Santa Barbara, California
See the ruins of an abandoned private castle! Knapp’s Castle was built by George Knapp the founder of Union Carbide Corporation in 1916. Later it was destroyed by a forest fire and not rebuilt. The stonework that remains is a site frequently used by pro photographers. It is on private property high up in the Santa Ynez Mountains above Santa Barbara, but it’s been open for public visitation for years.
To get here it takes a short hike from a narrow windy paved road in the mountains. See our map for the location. The views down toward Lake Cachuma are incredible. On the way up here be sure to stop by the Chumash Painted Cave.
