Can anyone tell me how far it is to walk from where you park the car to Knapps Castle please? Is it hard going and how long would it take. Is it worth a stop?

Interesting. How did you hear about this relic?? Most people that live in CA have probably never heard of it.

It's not that easy to find but once you reach the gate it's about a 5 min uphill hike. Also, one would need a $5 Adventure Pass to park there (not sure anymore where to get one of those).

The place is quite interesting and even at times reminds me of some of the ancient ruins one can see in Israel, just not as old.

It's been a while since I have been there so I can't guarantee it's still accessible.

Is it worth a stop? Well, not really. It's really out of the way and there are so many other more interesting things to do in that region.

Thnaks for your replies. In answer to your question ' How did you hear about this relic?? I am in the process of planning an 18 day tour of California, Arizona and Nevada, starting in San Francisco and ending in Las Vegas. I have done several road trip before and I try to find as many different experiences en route.

I look at the map, TA, travel books etc and see what places of interest are near to my planned route. This is how I heard of it and also Chumash painted cave. While in the mountains I am planning to see Cold Sprin Tavern as a friend I am travbvelling with wants to visit and authentic 'wild west' saloon, this seems to fit the bill?

We will have stayed overnight in San Luis Obispo and will be on our way to 2 nights in Santa Barbara, so if you have any recommendations I would appreciate it?

I asked about the hike because I have a little acilles trouble and wouldnt want to walk miles, especially uphill or downhill but I really like the quirky places.

With a slight Achilles injury it generally wouldn't be a problem. If you can walk a dirt path, maybe with some ruts here and there, it shouldn't be an issue.

I think you mean Cold Spring Tavern? It would be a very nice stop but I really wouldn't call it a Wild West Saloon.

Perhaps while you're in Arizona you can venture to Prescott. The area called "Whiskey Row" has the Oldest Saloon in Arizona.

That one, to me, had more of an old Wild West Saloon atmosphere.

We are staying in Prescott overnight. I have heard about Whiskey Row, what is the name of the tavern?

Yes I can walk a dirt path no problem, I just didnt want to give myself a problem for the rest of the trip not knowing really waht the terrain is like. Yes I did mean Cold Spring Tavern (Typo!), Not worth the experience then? Any thing else in the area i should not miss?

AbbieC

It's called The Palace. It's right across from the Courthouse Square...as all of Whiskey Row is.
