Caught In The Mix — KIRA POWELL director/writer/actor

In 2021, Kira wrote, directed and starred in her one-woman show, “Caught In The Mix,” which was one of the select few Hollywood Fringe diversity scholarship winners, and had its world premiere at the Hollywood Fringe Festival in August of 2021. Additionally, “Caught In The Mix” won a BEST OF BROADWATER award along with a SOARING SOLO SOCIAL IMPACT AWARD, which is awarded to the show that “displays excellence in Solo Theatre while possessing a message that makes a deeply needed, positive and transformative social impact.” “Caught In the Mix” was selected as part of the 2021 Santa Monica Fringe Festival, the prestigious 2022 Los Angeles Women’s Theater Festival, and the upcoming United Solo Festival in New York.

Kira Powell’s “Caught In The Mix” is an autobiographical one-woman show about Kira, a mixed black and Latina woman, who grew up believing she was white. Kira takes us on a journey with her through her life as she struggles to accept her true identity.

Kira’s vulnerability, truth, and humor carries us through the topics of racism, anti-blackness, white favoritism, colorism, and what it’s like for a person of color to be raised in a household and society that idolizes whiteness. We follow her through her identity struggles into a life of self love and self worth.

TIME AND LIFE HAS CHANGED US ALL AND KIRA’S STORY IS A BRILLIANT, SHINING CONTEMPLATION OF THAT. SHE FILLS HER STORY WITH DEEP SOUL SEARCHING, A LOT OF HUMOR, COMPLEX REASONING AND REFLECTION AND, ULTIMATELY, A JOYFUL SENSE OF GRATITUDE.”
