A first-look image of Peaky Blinders' Kingsley Ben-Adir in the role of reggae icon Bob Marley has been released.

Ben-Adir – who will also be seen in Greta Gerwig's hotly-anticipated Barbie movie – will play Marley in an upcoming biopic also starring Lashana Lynch as the singer's wife Rita.

In the first image from the set, the actor can be seen in character as Bob Marley, rocking faux dreadlocks and a Rasta tam as he's surrounded by fans.

King Richard's Reinaldo Marcus Green directs from a script by Frank E Flowers and The Sopranos' producer Terence Winter.

Alongside Ben-Adir and Lynch, the untitled biopic also stars Jesse Cilio as Bob Marley's father, Norval Marley.

This isn't Ben-Adir's first high-profile biopic role as he's played prominent real-life figures over the past few years.

In 2020, the actor appeared as Malcolm X in Regina King's directorial debut One Night in Miami.

That same year, Ben-Adir took on the role of former US president Barack Obama for political miniseries The Comey Rule. The Showtime drama also starred The Newsroom's Jeff Daniels as former FBI director James Comey and Brendan Gleeson as Donald Trump.

Ben-Adir will next star as one of the Kens in Gerwig's Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the titular Mattel doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Rounding out the cast are Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa, Marvel's Simu Liu, Insecure's Issa Rae and Sex Education's Emma Mackey as well as Will Ferrell and Kate McKinnon.

The untitled Bob Marley biopic is expected to premiere in 2024. Greta Gerwig's Barbie has a release date of July 21, 2023.
