Edouard Mendy is set to make his first start under Graham Potter in Chelsea's Champions League clash against Dinamo Zagreb after two months out with a knee injury... as No 2 Kepa struggles with a heel issue

  • Edouard Mendy is yet to start for Chelsea since Graham Potter took charge
  • The Senegalese shotstopper has been overlooked for Spain's Kepa Arrizabalaga
  • But Kepa has not trained this week after sustaining a heel injury against Brighton
  • Kalidou Koulibaly is also in contention to feature against Dinamo Zagreb

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is set to earn his first start under Graham Potter in their Champions League clash against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday.

The Senegalese shotstopper sustained a knee injury in their trip to West Ham two months ago and has failed to reclaim his starting spot given Kepa Arrizabalaga's impressive form.

But after the Spaniard picked up an injury during their 4-1 humiliation at Brighton, and subsequently missed training, Potter will be handing Mendy a place in the starting line-up.

Arrizabalaga, 28, was hooked off the pitch at half-time - with the Blues trailing 3-0 - having sustained a heel injury in the match and did not partake in their open training at Cobham on Tuesday.

Mendy came on in place of the Spaniard to make his first appearance under Potter - despite having recovered from his knee injury at the start of the month. The former Brighton boss has opted to keep him on the bench until now.

Meanwhile, Blues defender Kalidou Koulibaly has returned to training and is in contention to feature in the game against the Croatian side, in a major boost for Potter's side.

The central defender has missed Chelsea's last three games having sustained an injury during their 0-0 draw with Brentford.

The bad news, however, is that there was no sight of Matteo Kovacic in first-team training as the 28-year-old suffers another injury setback.

The midfielder has been struggling with a calf injury throughout the season but was deemed fit enough to complete 90 minutes against the Seagulls on Saturday.

Despite this, his absence from Chelsea's open training session at Cobham will leave fans worried about the current extent of his injury.

The Blues will host Dinamo Zagreb in their final Champions League group stage match tomorrow night having already secured their place in the next round of the competition.
