WINSLOW II: FROM STARDOM TO SUSPECT

This month, court proceedings for Kellen Winslow II will continue at the North County Division of San Diego Superior Court in Vista.

The 35-year-old son of the Chargers hall of famer of the same name, who attended Scripps Ranch High School and played in the NFL for 10 seasons, faces felony charges that include rape and kidnapping.

Here’s a summary of his career and legal troubles:

2001: All-state player initially chose to attend Washington, but his father refused to sign his letter of intent. A live television event to announce his choice was canceled. At Miami, Winslow became one of just four true freshmen to play during the team’s run to the national championship.

May 2, 2001: Months after revealing his college choice, Winslow was involved in a fight at a park near Scripps High School. Medical expenses for injuries inflicted on another student, according to court records, approached $120,000. A $3 million lawsuit was settled confidentially.

2003: Picked as Mackey Award winner, given annually to the best tight end in college football. In 2016, was inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.

April 24, 2004: Picked No. 6 overall in the NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, signing the largest rookie contract for a tight end in league history. Earlier picks in the draft include the Chargers’ selection of Eli Manning at No. 1 and the Giants’ pick of Philip Rivers at No. 4.

2004 season: Played in just two games after breaking his leg while attempting to cover an onside kick against the Cowboys.

2005 season: Missed entire campaign after injuring his right knee in a Westlake, Ohio, parking lot while trying to learn to ride a motorcycle he’d purchased. Winslow told SiriuxXM NFL Radio: “I remember (doctors) taking about amputating my leg. They said I was never going to play again.”

2007: Selected for the NFL’s Pro Bowl after finishing with 82 catches for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns with the Browns.

April 2009: Signs a six-year, $36.1 million deal with the Buccaneers. At the time, the deal is the richest at the position in NFL history.

November 2013: A 58-year-old woman accuses Winslow, who played for the New York Jets, of masturbating in the parking lot of a Target in New Jersey. The only charges — for possession of synthetic marijuana — were later dropped. Winslow never plays for another NFL team. In 2016, told SiriusXM: “We make mistakes in life. It’s all about reflecting upon yourself, looking at yourself in the mirror and coming out a better person in the end. That’s what I am now.”

June 14: Arrested on suspicion of multiple sex-crime charges, including two counts of forcible rape involving two transient women in Encinitas. Winslow has pleaded not guilty.

July 12: Ordered to stand trial on charges that include rape and kidnapping. The same day, prosecutors filed a new charge of raping an unconscious 17-year-old in 2003. The defendant now faces six felony kidnapping and sexual-assault charges, as well as one misdemeanor count of indecent exposure and two misdemeanor counts of trespassing. Winslow has pleaded not guilty.

Aug. 17: Scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on the newest charge in Vista.
