Spurs Star Kawhi Leonard Still Drives A ’97 Tahoe Because “It Runs And It’s Paid Off”

Kahwi Leonard is a real one.

He may have a $94 million contract and is one of the key players on the San Antonio Spurs, but Kahwi Leonard would much rather enjoy the smaller pleasures in life.

The 24-year-old forward chatted with Lee Jenkins from Sports Illustrated and discussed these small pleasures, such as how he still drives his 1997 Chevy Tahoe from high school. Affectionately known as “Gas Guzzler,” the Cali-native chooses to use the throwback vehicle because “It runs, and it’s paid off.”

We feel that.

He also makes sure he has coupons to his favorite fast food joint, Wingstop, close by.

“He is happy to sponsor Wingstop, which sends him coupons for free wings, so he can feed his Mango Habanero addiction,” the article reads. “This winter, after his $94 million contract kicked in, he panicked when he lost his coupons. Wingstop generously replenished his supply.”

Being on the Spurs hasn’t changed Leonard one bit. An interview with a friend in the article notes that Leonard has always been humble and has never really liked exposure. Coach Gregg Popovich was also quoted saying that Kawhi only cares about the game itself.

“He wants the greatness badly,” said Popovich. “He doesn’t give a damn about the stardom. He loves the game, he ignores the rest of it.”
