Product Description
About Schmidt (DVD) Oscar winner Jack Nicholson stars as Warren Schmidt, an embittered man who has just retired after 32 years as an insurance company actuary. When his wife dies suddenly, Warren packs up the 35-foot Winnebago that he and his wife had planned to travel the country in and sets out on a journey across the Nebraska plains to Denver, Colorado, for his daughter's (Hope Davis) wedding to a waterbed salesman (Dermot Mulroney), whom Warren despises. Every move Warren makes seems wrong, and he appears destined to end his life as he lived it: a failure. But along the way, Warren recounts his journey to and shares his observations with an unexpected friend--a poor Tanzanian orphan whom Warren is sponsoring for 73 cents a day. In his long letters to the boy, Warren begins to see himself--and the life he has lived--in a new light.Globe Award Winner for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture.

As quickly as he retires, the cycle of unintended events and circumstances begin to rip all of his facile and delusional ideas about his world and his place in it to shreds. His wife dies, and in so doing leads him to discoveries about her, his best friend, who had been "servicing" the wife in intimate ways for some time, and hiss daughter, all of which force him into a sort of self-examination about himself and all his assumptions that he otherwise might never have recognized. Still, the process as presented here is both tragic and very funny, and he attempts to make some sense out of this madcap set of circumstance, trying to use his old methods of perception that just help at all.
And whether it is in coping with the loss of his wife's death, the realization that he had been systematically cuckolded by his best friend, or the belated recognition that his relationship with his daughter is perfunctory at best, Nicholson uses all of his cinematic presence to enchant us with his responses. Perhaps the most hilarious scenes involve Nicholson trying to understand and cope in some fashion with Kathy bates, playing his new son-in-law to be's mother, an unattached, free-thinking, sensuous, and horny earth Mother of a woman who wants to get down and dirty in the hot tub with the now free and footloose Warren. Needless to say, Ms. Bates comes as close as anyone can to stealing the scenes away from our boy Jack.
In its essence, like the character Nicholson plays in "The Pledge", this is an extended character study which here meaningfully and quite much more humorously examines the life that up until now Schmidt has so scrupulously avoided doing. In this voyage toward the possibility of discovery and growth, Schmidt is not faring so well. Yet the end leaves one hope, and the film is an evocative and thought-provoking way of stirring us into a little look into our own presumptions and way of living. This is a film I can heartily recommend, especially for viewers old enough to see the possibilities our poor Mr. Schmidt is trying so desperately to avert his eyes from. Enjoy!
I personally did not care much for the film story, though. Although the story flows well, I found it depressing, moody and without much entertainment value. Where there is humor it is of the dark sort. I realize this is my personal take on the film, but then ... that's what this review is. You may not agree with it - that's your privilege.
The theme is one of social reality; this is the "success story" of most middle class Americans. Successful marriage, successful career with retirement, nice home, no financial worries. And what does it mean? Nothing at all because the inner human being is unsatisfied. We find (something I've known for years) that it is not what one does that causes regret late in life, but what one has failed to do. Schmidt has all the American trappings of success, but finds they are empty and without meaning. His wife is shrewish and dies shortly after he retires. He could care less about his comfortable house (to the extent that he abandons it and takes off in a motor home), his former employer has pensioned him off and does not want the value of his experience or advice. His friends turn out to be hollow. His daughter (whom he cherishes) seems put out by his attempts to visit and only really cares about the checks he regularly sends her. Schmidt realizes that when he dies, no one will remember him but briefly.
Quality of the dvd is good, though unremarkable. We have become used to the amazing quality of today's technology and generally only comment when the transfer is lacking in spite of it.
Of the extras ... very much set in the mood of the movie. They consist primarily of various versions of the opening theme (a lukewarm tune in any event) and various views of "Woodmen of the World" insurance company headquarters in Omaha. Not very inspiring or interesting. I would have preferred an interview with Jack on his feelings about the part he played so well.
With all this, why the three stars? Why not less? Because I do feel that the acting was good and the film well put together .. even if I didn't particularly care for it. I would say that if you are a JN fan, you'll want this. Otherwise, you'll probably be disappointed. On the plus side, you can usually find a copy for a couple of bucks .. so not much is lost if you don't like the film.
