1Her training began very early.
REX/Shutterstock It's no wonder that Kate's been recognized for her acting chops so many times — she began intensive training as a 10-year-old at the Redroofs Drama School in England. Can you spot her in this pic from the late 1980s?
2She got her start in a kids' commercial.
Ltd/REX/Shutterstock When Kate was 11 years old, she starred in a commercial for Sugar Puffs, a sugary cereal. It was a sweet (hyuck hyuck) start to a massive career. Soon after, she got her first television role in a mini-series called Anglo Saxon Attitudes at the age of 17.
3Before making it big, she also worked in a deli.

4She thanked James Cameron with the perfect bouquet.
Getty Images When director James Cameron cast her as Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic, she sent him a bouquet of — what else? — roses in gratitude.
5Filming "Titanic" was extra cold for Kate.
Getty Images It was clearly the role of a lifetime, but playing Rose was no picnic. You know all those scenes where she's running, swimming and floating around the freezing water inTitanic? Yeah, she was the only actor not wearing a wetsuit. Talk about dedication!
6But the role launched a lifelong friendship with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Getty Images There's no questioning the fact that this pair had some serious onscreen chemistry in 1997, but they've also maintained a strong friendship through the years. "I think it's a testament to that fact that he's such a lovely person and that people really not only admire him, but also really like him and respect him," she told E! regarding the Oscars' recognition of Leo's film work, choking back tears. "I feel quite proud of that, it's lovely — I keep getting emotional when I talk about Leo."

7Her hair isn't naturally red.
Getty Images Despite her breakout role as the redheaded Rose in Titanic, her hair is actually a cool strawberry blonde color. Still, doesn't she look fantastic with these scarlet strands?
8She was offered the role of Eowyn, but turned it down.
Getty Images This princess-turned-warrior in Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was originally offered to Kate, who passed on it. Miranda Otto was then cast in the role.
9She's made multiple Oscar-worthy achievements.
Courtesy of The Weinstein Company For her striking performance as Sarah in 2006's drama Little Children, Kate earned her fifth Academy Award nomination at age 31, making her the youngest actor to do so. In 2009, she again broke a record for her role in The Reader by becoming the youngest actor to have been nominated six times at just 33 years old. Her previously nominated roles: Marianne in Sense and Sensibility (1996), Rose in Titanic (1998), Young Iris in Iris (2002), Clementine in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2005) and Joanna Hoffman in Steve Jobs (2016).

10She once admitted a pretty weird habit to us.
Getty Images In 2007, she told Good Housekeeping about a bizarre tick she has. "I'm a little bit obsessive about my feet," she said. "I pick at my feet. I'm sure that's what everyone wants to know!"
11Her 2009 Oscar is kept in her bathroom.
Getty Images This little tidbit is one thing that makes Kate sound like a seriously fun friend. "The whole point is for everyone to pick it up and go, 'I'd like to thank my son and my dad' — and you can always tell when someone has, because they're in there a little bit longer after they flushed," she told Usin 2015. "They'll come out looking slightly pink-cheeked. It's hysterical." Can we use your powder room, Kate?
12Her husband's name is Ned Rocknroll.
Getty Images Yes, really. To be fair, he was born Abel Smith, but he chose to change it to Ned Rocknroll. The pair met in 2011 while Kate was vacationing on Necker Island, a private resort owned by Ned's uncle Richard Branson, a.k.a. the founder of Virgin Group. He became her third husband in 2012 and the two welcomed their first child in 2013.

13She named her son "Bear Blaze" for a very sweet reason.
Getty Images At first glance, the name "Bear Blaze" may come off as another bizarre celebrity kid name, but there's a rather beautiful story behind her third child's name. The first part comes from a friend whose nickname was Bear. The second portion is derived from how she and Ned met. "Bear's second name is Blaze because my husband and I met in a house fire basically," she explained to Ellen Degeneres in 2014. "The house burnt down and we survived, but we wanted something of the fire, and so Blaze was the name that we came up with."
14She once won an Emmy for playing...herself.
Courtesy of BBC Two That's right: Kate Winslet is such a good actress that in 2006, she received an Emmy for playing a comedic version of herself in the British show Extras.
15Her kids refer to Leonardo DiCaprio as "Uncle Leo."
Getty Images As if their friendship wasn't cute enough already, Kate's three children call Leo "Uncle Leo." Is it a Seinfeld reference or simply a cute nickname? We may never know.
