In 2020, Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba ended its run in Weekly Shonen Jump, culminating at 23 volumes. While the source material is now old news, ufotable's anime adaptation is still going strong, with at least one more season left to go. The series has roughly 80 chapters left to adapt, which consists of the final three arcs of the saga. Most of the time, the source material represents the optimal way to consume a story, but exceptions do exist. Even though the manga is great in its own right, Demon Slayer's anime is a step above, largely thanks to ufotable's fantastic animation.

So far, Demon Slayer has produced three full seasons and a movie, all of which were among the best releases of their respective years. Although it took a while to explode in popularity, season one hit a turning point with episode 19, which is arguably responsible for the franchise's mainstream success. The Movie: Mugen Train followed soon after, and the anime film ended up being a huge commercial hit. Demon Slayer built on that success with the Entertainment District arc, which might be overall the anime's strongest story up to this point. Season 3's Swordsmith Village arc did not quite manage to reach the same heights, although it was still a fun watch.

While the action and animation tend to hog the limelight, Demon Slayer's characters are beloved in their own right. Consequently, fans might find themselves wondering "How old is Tanjiro?" Or "When are the Demon Slayers' birthdays?"

Although they will be kept to a minimum, spoilers will not be completely avoidable.

Updated April 22, 2024, by Mark Sammut: Demon Slayer season 4 will launch on May 12, 2024, with the sequel airing on Crunchyroll in North America. While probably the weakest cour so far, season 3 still delivered solid action, two entertaining villains, and great animation. Hopefully, the sequel covering the Hashira Training Arc is even better.

Demon Slayer's main character, Tanjiro's life turned into a walking nightmare when a demon slaughtered his family and turned his sister, Nezuko, to the dark side. Demon Slayer: Tanjiro’s Biggest Mistakes
Despite being the heroic protagonist of Demon Slayer, Tanjiro has made some critical mistakes in the series.

While a warm and kind person, Tanjiro is more than willing to make tough decisions. He is under no illusion that demons should be sparred or that killing would make him no better than his enemies; Tanjiro gets the job done because he has someone who depends on him. The protagonist will not let his sister down.

Nezuko Kamado

Demon

  • First Episode: 1
  • Anime Voice Actor (Japanese): Akari Kito
  • Anime Voice Actor (English): Abby Trott

One day while her brother was away, Nezuko watched the rest of her family be butchered by a demon. The young girl almost faced the same fate, but she ended up becoming a demon herself; however, Tanjiro made it his mission to reverse Nezuko's condition and turn her back into a human.

Demon Slayer only provides a snippet of Nezuko's time as a human, showing her to be rather sweet and altruistic. Following her transformation, Nezuko became very different as she developed traits synonymous with demons, including overwhelming strength and a thirst for blood. She also largely lost the ability to speak and spent a long time in isolation due to a weakness to sunlight, only showing up sporadically. As such, her personality can be harder to pin down than some of the anime's other characters, although her love for her brother is obvious.
