Karim began his football career when he was eight years old in the local club Bron Terraillon. He gained attention from the French giants Lyon club officials after scoring two goals in an under-ten tournament.

2: Lyon (1997 – 2009)

He joined the club as a youngster after proving his skills in trial matches. From serving as a ball boy for senior players to ascending as the best player in the youth category his transgression was fast. As a teenager, he was described as respectful and confident. When he was called for introductions in the senior team he was loud enough to let every one of them know his ambitions and plans and he had come to take their place. In his debut match, he assisted Bryan Bergougnoux in scoring. Karim scored his first professional double in a 4–0 victory over Grenoble in the Coupe de France.

Benzema struggled to get play time due to the presence of other strikers, it was not until 2006-2007 that he started appearing more on the field. The 2007-2009 season saw his rise after major strikers left the club he became the lead striker.

All of this did not go unnoticed and he won the Ballon d’Or in the same year, a title he very well deserves.
