If you set them up right you can sleep flat and on your tummy or side. I use a Skeeter Beater Pro. Built in net and build for fat guys like me. :)

I went with the Clark North American. It was pricey but I am very happy with it. The ends are coverd, zippered bug net, storage pockets underneath that also act as bottom insulation and also a storm shield that zips over for extra heat retention.

now that's just cool...ya gotta love a buddy named Donk! :D
SC, One Legged Josh is my son.
Thanks Son for posting the picture and for a great weekend camp.
I'm definately going to be "hanging around" camp a lot more often. The sleep was very comfortable. Woke up a little confused a couple times then realized I was in a hammock. Whew! For a minute there I didn't know what had me. The grand Trunk Double and BCUSA Tarp combo saw me through 28* weather with Friday night gusts to 55 mph. I want to upgrade from the supplied nylon ropes and go to straps with eyes sometime in the future.
I hung with woobie under, sleeping bag inside with wool blanket, and a hoodie zipped over the foot to pull up after I got settled.

DIY gathered end hammock.
Modified GuideGear 12'x12' tarp
DIY bugnet
DIY whoopie slings
tree straps made from cargo straps

Why? I'm cheap, it was rewarding to make my own, and I'm cheap. (Did I mention that I'm cheap?)

I like having my bugnet separate from my hammock because if I have to go to ground, I can use it without setting up my hammock on the ground.

thank ya for the background, Donk. I should have paid more attention to the connection...it's been there in Josh's pics and stories...I just didn't concentrate I guess.

You guys have a lot of good times - we are all lucky to have Josh share 'em with us. :)

I just got my WBBB last week... this is my first hammock. I looked and looked once I became single again and finally picked one. So far I think I made the right choice. I haven't had a chance to sleep in it all night yet but the couple of naps I've taken have been very nice. I can get a very true "flat lie" in it...

My reason behind hanging is my bad back... I wanted to find a comfortable sleeping solution that didn't involve me lugging around a 10# thermarest basecamp.

Now if I can figure out a way to keep my dog from nudging me ever time I get into the thing I will be golden.

Well, I made the commitment today. I went by Great Outdoor Provision in Winston-Salem, NC today and picked out an ENO Double Nest (gray and forest green), and a set of Slap-Straps, as my birthday present. I was going to get the rap rings and skip the slap-straps, but they didn't have any of the rings in stock. I didn't get the skeeter net, though. At least not yet. I probably will, but I didn't want to end up getting that as a birthday present, too. Plus, i can get it for cheap from REI on my dividend. So, I have joined the ranks of hammock-owners, at least, if not hammock-camper yet. Am hoping to string it up in my backyard when I get back to MD and try it out a bit, before going to the woods with it.

theres a variety of choices, on the market. I was at the local kmart and found the castaway hammock for just 33.99 and has weight limit of 300lbs and fits in astuff sack the size of a small melon. It would be a good choice for someone wanting to try an economical hammock.

I love the pictures keep them coming.
Thanks Bill

Been carrying an ENO Singlenest for the past half a decade. However, I never did get around to buying their guardian bugnet or underquilt.. which cut down on my use of the hammock until recently when I happened accross a US Military Bug-bar that the original owner MODIFIED into a hammock bugnet.

Dude, whoever you were, you were awesome. You belong in heaven at the same table as Gandhi and Jimi Hendrix.

I am still new to hammock camping so I purchased a Grand Trunk double for my first hammock and also purchased the BCUSA tan tarp to go with it.

I hope to use the combo for the overnighter trip that is part of the Basic Bushcraft class here at the forum.

Here is a picture with a military poncho before I got the BCUSA tarp.

I'm the poster boy for ENO. Bought mine in 2006 and added the bug net and tarp over the years. I can't say if it's better than anything else, all I know is it works for me and it's paid for.

I just stick with a cheap surplus net hammock.
I suppose it could be used to help catch fish too, but could double as a ghillie.
I am not living in an overly cold country, -20 is the coldest it's ever been and with a simply emergency blanket there is not much chill factor.
Cheap, strong and stores pretty small, it's virtually unnoticeable inside my sleeping bag compression.
If needs be also, there is not many places I could go and not find a few inches of natural mattress material.

The Warbonnet BlackBird looks like a great hang. At $25 a paycheck, I can have one and tarp this coming spring, in April. Might find cheaper tarp that does just as well.

Warbonnet Blackbird. I originally had a Hennessy but switched to the WBBB after hearing so much hype about it. The hype is warrented, it's the most comfortable hammock I've laid in.
+1

Malleus hit the nail on the head. WBBB for me as well. For me, it's the best hammock around.

What makes it the best in your opinion? Is it the size, suspension. Is it cut different? Is it just ease of use. I would like your thoughts.
Primarily, the difference is in the cut. The addition of a foot-box makes a flat lay much easier and roomier for the feet and legs.

I've got 2 DIY's I made and a Hennessey Explorer Deluxe I like them all. I will have a BlackBird by next spring just to see how nice they are. I just can't find a better way to get a good nights sleep.

I just got a Hennessy Explorer Deluxe Asym, I actually won it, and this past weekend was the first time I used it. Man was it comfortable. I didn't even need a blanket. I just started to do a little research, so think I may get some of their accessories, the snake skin, and maybe a larger tarp to go over it.

Hi there
I currently have a DD Travel Hammock. Basically most of the US models are unavailable here or if ordered over the net the cost of shipping is prohibitive. DD on the other hand, based in the UK ships to mainland Europe for not a lot of money.
I like the built in mozzie net, the double layer and the fact it can be used as a bivvi too. I've added whoopie slings and a snakeskin to make set up and pack up quicker and easier.
On top is a DD camo tarp. So far done about 20 nights this year. I really like the set up, even if it is a bit heavier than some of the other option.
cheers

I've got an ENO Double Nest. So far, I've only hung it in the back yard and used it for snoozing before the really hot weather hit. I need to figure out the whole ridge-line thing, though. I've read they help to get a flatter lie, which I really haven't been able to attain yet. I need to figure that out, because I pretty-much HAVE to sleep on my side. I think. Anyway, I think a ridge-line would help anyway. Just haven't been able to figure it out. Not sure if it is because the spacing on my hangs is too wide so far, or what.

But I, too, can use the DN's extra width to help combat bugs by wrapping up deep inside it.
