There are moments of poignancy, as when three children share a cookie. Friendly laughter teaches us that children are always looking for soulmates. Chris is ready to tell Samantha that she isn't going to Paris, but to the 'Coffee House' club to perform. Chris's brother, Mike(Christopher Marquette) is already in the car driving seat eager to take Samantha to the engagement. In Chris's infatuation that we are following, his pursuit of Jamie Palomino(Amy Smart) is made into a playground amusement; as parochial as clumsily climbing over gel-glow blocks. While conflicts of the past are pursued straightforward, saturated in the background of some scene being played out, there exists secretively, sturdy confidences-there are other moods pulling at these friendly, jocular people, from other perplexities.
Jamie probes Chris about his career. Chris has a thing, a boastful attitude because he thinks the way to Jamie's romantic interest is through success. It's endearing because behind closed doors Jamie shelves her annoyance through questions. Chris oppresses shock, in all it's forms-surprise, laughter, and disbelief. These non-gluttonous quirks are stimulated by the ruminations on the acts of other people in separate adventures. Samantha, as a guitar playing singer, casts out seriousness, but she has severe misconceptions about the motivations of perceived types who are forms of roguish provocation.
Chris's brother Mike, asks the empty room to raise hands if anyone else has a brother who is a homosexual. Chris files out the door in rejection, past the remark, because he couldn't atone with Jamie. These counter-pointed scenes of vexation have parodies, and from foreign codes real dramas evolve. The instructive culture which provided blue prints has been deviated from. Intense emotions become involved. This is perfect for Chris and Jamie and Samantha and Dusty Dinkelman(Chris Klein), as now the folly of accusation is attached to these haphazard loves.
