Plot holes and fillers
julieshotmail4 August 2021
While the first season of "The Handmaid's Tale" is absolutely brilliant and captivating, season 4 is left on its own to come up with a compelling storyline. Yes, in certain respects it succeeds, however, for most of season 4, slow-mo fillers are used to stretch the running time, as an attempt to disguise that the creators are truly running out of material. The slow stares while driving a car, the slow-motion walks, the sunshine glowing through a window, the hazy ambience of Canadian skyscrapers - several minutes of fillers are used without anything really happening. When things do happen, some events get silly and some subplots abruptly get abandoned, including the most interesting part with Esther, Janine, and Aunt Lydia.

I'm still a fan, but....

Warning: Spoilers
This show has been pleasant to view over the years, but that has diminished. The tension just isnt there anymore. We know june is always going to get what she wants, no matter how ridiculously she gets it. Others have mentioned the plot holes so I wont waste time. This show needs a good final season and to rest in the afterlife. Please no more close up of elizabeth moss's face, we GET it. Why do they still have all these side characters if june is going to be the only thing that matters? Would love to really see Lydia's story fleshed out. Or more of alexis bledel? What's the point of even having her in the show anymore if she only gets 5 scenes per season. Am I the only one wondering where June's mom is? Why did they even show us her a couple of seasons ago?

The Writers Must Really Think Viewers Are Stupid !!!!
jennfinn20 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Why does it seem like everyone lets June boss them around, Luke, Moira, Emily, Tuello, and even Commander Lawrence. ??

Why is Serena allowed to make demands to the Canadians ?? Insisting the interviewer call Fred Commander, he's not a Commander in Canada and he certainly wouldn't be one in Gilead anymore after giving away their secrets.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that Nick would risk his position as Commander just to quench June's bloodlust. How in the world is Lawrence and Nick going to explain what happened to Fred ??

Gilead gave up 22 women in exchange for Fred and they're just gonna be okay with getting nothing in return ?? The creators/writers must think the audience is a bunch of morons if they expect us to believe this crap !!

All June succeeded in doing by savagely killing Fred is making him a martyr to all his loyal followers and making herself look like an unstable crazy woman. She's also put Luke, Moira, and baby Nicole's lives in danger while I'm assuming she plans on going on the run.

If Fred would've made it back to Gilead he would've been killed there and his supporters would see how Gilead really is plus it probably would've served to turn Serena completely against Gilead also but instead they have someone else to blame.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - JUNE NEVER EVER THINKS BEFORE SHE ACTS !! Which usually results in her doing something completely stupid and someone else gets hurt.

Beyond weak
CX78-I22 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Come on! Beating Fred to death by June and Co destroyed the whole symbolism of their characters from saintly innocent victims of oppression into a pack of vicious brainless criminals. Fred serving in a Gulag by the inhumane rules he created would have been the sweetest justice ever, a great metaphor for Purgatory and the whole crooked dogma behind Gilead.

And what about Hannah? HELLO, writers! June wanted her badly. June should've mentioned her to be included in the exchange and then find some reason for rejection to keep the drama going and stay consistent with the character. And what about Aunt Lydia's and Janine's story? Where did that go?

Get some new writers guys, because the current team will drive this series into the ground. It will be another GOT disaster.

Good Scene But Seriously?
tvdefrancesco24 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This is my nightmare! That's what I was thinking when Waterford was getting chased by all the Handmaids. That was probably the best scene of the show since season 1. Doesn't make up for all of the horrendous story telling over the last two seasons. Or how much I hate June but it was a good scene.

But seriously, we couldn't get Serena's reaction to the violent death of her husband. Her fear in possibly becoming a Handmaiden. If Serena doesn't become a Handmaid next season and have her kid taken away I will scream. I've been waiting 3 seasons for her downfall. In that time we've had 2,347,876 close ups of June's face but we can't get 1 Serena reaction?! Just to tease us and hold us over until next season. Instead we have mail guy open up just 1 package out of 100 that happened to have his finger in it. Cmon. Seriously. They better have taken pictures.

And how about Gilead and the Canadians just walk back and forth across the border like nothing now. They go here to meet than back across then meet up down there with neither government interacting. Plot holes galore and lazy story telling. This show is not good.

Dire
Leofwine_draca24 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Absolute nonsense in this closing episode. They expect you to believe that all these strings are pulled and people are somehow able to cross the border secretly en masse just for an act of personal revenge. It reduces the huge tapestry and potential of the show to crass crudity and simplicity. If this is a reflection of modern America then it's in a dire place.

Terrible ending
Sushi118 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
No logic ending, just a fan service... that makes absolutely no sense.. Gilead wants Fred, Gilead gives Fred to June and her friends in exchange for 20 women? Meh.

Him being hanged would've made much, much more sense.

Not sure about it
logbinder17 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Hmm... If I was the writer for the show, I would have sent Fred and Serena back to Gilead and end it all in sort of "take your own medicine" fashion. Fred would likely be executed and Serena made into a handmade. No blood on hands of June and both of them get the treatment they sort of were imposing on others when they were in Gilead. All blame would be on Gilead, while you could show June to be the better person. I know the revenge might seem satisfying, but it's just so out of the blue and it bends all Canada and Gilead rules, which is sort of lame (for example in season 4 everything in Gilead works out in June's favor without at least anything leading up to it).

Also I would see June, now that she's in Canada, as some sort of leader, fighting against Gilead from Canada and it's just seems strange to me that, with all her contacts in Gilead (Lawrence, Nick) it was not explored more broadly and only for seeking vengeance. After 4 seasons that's not who I took the character of June for. I thought the character was more often than not altruistic, yes, bold, but not really cruel, which the last seconds showed her to be. But well, I might as well be wrong (so I guess I like the ending for being thought-provoking in a way).

Bottom line is it is a weird ending for me and I really feel that not seeing Serena made into a handmade after all that she imposed on June is just wasteful screenwriting.

You are going to hate me, but this was a very weak episode, full of plot holes.
pepo-4579316 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen the whole series twice and I have to say that this finale was substandard. After the adrenaline wore off, I went and saw it again and the plot holes are simply too much to bare.

Some of them....

June just waltzes in to Fred's "cell" (looks like a hotel room and not a detention center) to have a drink with him? No one is guarding anyone? No detention officers are on the watch. The conversation is simply meaningless.

Fred is taken to some bridge and them Nick show up with some of the Eyes to escort him to some undisclosed location? And the Eyes don't question the fact that Waterford is being smuggled back into Canada just to quench June's blood thirst of revenge? No one in Gilead has figured out Nick's or Lawrence's questionable loyalties. Are they that stupid as a society?

Lawrence knows that Fred is going to be lynched and does nothing to prevent it. How is he going to explain that 22 women were "traded" for Fred and he never shows up to Gilead?

The episode was average, nothing to write home to momma about. The problem with this TV series is that the story is over....they have overstretched it. There no where to go now. One of the two main antagonists is dead. The story is running really thin. I think the show runners could have done better.

Offred Comes Roaring Back With a Vengeance.
gkimmarygleim16 June 2021
No spoilers here. But this was a disturbingly satisfying episode. A plus +10 in every way. I can foresee much discussion about the last 10 minutes. However tonight I'm here to praise the Actors, the Director, the Writers, the camera work, sound & special effects. Excellent job by ALL the cast and crew. The music throughout the episode added so much with its foreboding low rumbling etc. I will be counting the weeks until Season 5 starts.

Very satisfying, but at what cost?
ali_rocketqueen16 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A season that packed lots of jaw dropping moments and unexpected twists, finishes in the most predictable way possible. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely loved seeing Fred hanging on the wall, but that scene was made at expense of its credibility. As satisfying as it is seeing June getting everything she wants, including unmonitored conversations at her whim with high ranking commanders to organise an illegal execution, it diminishes the idea of the powerful regime we feared so far. How is Lawrence going to justify to Gilead that he liberated 22 women in exchange of no one? Is Nick powerful enough to be able to justify the loss of a traitor to the regime that was in his custody? Was it necessary to make publicity of the murder by sending Serena a Finger? Looks like in season 5 we will have June on the run again. But I don't give up the hope that the writers will manage to unwrap this tidy and neat bow that concealed all the tensions built throughout this season.

Bad writing for a bad season
daniel-1428417 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This show in my opinion has been pretty sloppy since S2. These last 2 seasons have really dragged out. Like many others have pointed out already this finale episode just doesn't make any sense at all. You have June that apparently can go in Fred's cell whenever she pleases and then order the guard out of the room and he closes the door to leave them by themself, given the history between those 2 this seems really stupid and not believable at all. Also somehow a commander/Lawrence who basically commited treason in gilead eyes and they do know what he has done gets put back in power because he got some "dirt" on other commanders and is able to get 22 women out of gilead no issues whatsoever in exchange for Fred this also seems very unrealistic. You also have June who apparently is able to call all these people back in gilead including Lawrence and somehow nobody is listening to there conversation although when June was still in gilead and forced to call Luke everyone was listening to what she said I mean come on now regardless of the dirt Lawrence has they still would listen to his conversations. This entire season is just a mess now that they killed off Fred I guess the focus will only be on bringing gilead down. This show would of been better ending with this season they just keep doing all this wild stuff that is not believable at all.

Unrealistic
jennirebecca21 June 2021
Come on!!! She NEVER gets into any sort of trouble when she cause mayhem. I don't believe it. When she was in gilead she never got held accountable for any of her acts when ALL the other girls did. And now she is in Canada and can still get ahold of Lawrence and Nick whenever she wants, please. I hate where this is going. I can't stand the fact that she can do whatever she wants and it never held accountable for anything. Stupid.

Warning: Spoilers
Should have been the last season. Its dragging on now. And the whole thing with hunting Fred and the finger gift just all went too far. June is not a pleasant person anymore and is too far gone in her own hatred. She has a loving husband and a beautiful daughter and she acts like a crazy woman who needs sectioned. Didnt other people also suffer terrible fates yet they seem to be trying to cope. Lets leave June alone now and have a story about Janine and Esther please ...

Loved it till the end
dtleonard21 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
*Spoilers* I loved this episode right up until June and Company beat Fred to death in the woods. Yes, I know it was reminiscent of the Handmaidens beating a fellow Handmaid way back when but really? He should have been turned over to his government for punishment. That would have been much more satisfying.

And when is Serena going to admit her baby's father is not Fred (we know he was impotent) but Tuello?

Realistic
feet_ontheground25 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The thing that struck me over the time I have watched the series unfold was that not only were handmaid's being forced to birth children for their captors, but they were ALSO being 'forced' to kill under penalty of death anyone that did not follow their rules or live by their standards.

I had wondered how this would affect a woman over time... I feel that this staging of the murder of not only the man who raped her, the man who kept her as a slave, but who was also responsible for so much of what had happened to her, her family, her sex, and her country. I could see this as a realistic snap.. the need to destroy the man who forced this very psychologically damaging life on her.. After all they did 'teach' her to kill. It should shock no one when she does it to stop that 'commander' from going free after all of the damage he had caused.

I admired her strength...
mudvayne-9024516 June 2021
This finale packs a lot of punches. As in other seasons, we have had a few slow episodes, and the finale makes up for that, in fact it makes the episode more climatic. I forgot where I was for the full 58 minutes and for that I can thank Offred and friends. Phenomenal acting, script, editing and cinematography. The finale gives you some much needed closure whilst still leaving you pondering the possibilities for season 5 and how things will play out.

I've always enjoyed the slow pacing.
michbissy-7903721 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I've thoroughly admired all four seasons until the last fifteen minutes of the fourth.

SPOILERS

I do not believe in an eye for an eye. I do not believe in capital punishment. I believe in being the better person. Everything June has ever done, for all the deaths she's caused, she did for Hannah, Nicole, other Handmaids, a degree of revenge in her acts, sure.

But this was too much and at what cost?

I understand the symbolism of the red coat as she does it. I understand the desire to kill Fred. To make him scared. But now...

I just don't know.

I've defended June multiple times on threads. I just can't anymore.

June has become James Bond! Will she next become Rambo?
KaptainTuttey28 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
You have to watch this episode to believe how stupid the show and in particular June have become. Zero realism remains in this once brilliant show and my overall rating has dropped from 9 to 4. I had to give this episode 1 because a drama about the take over of the USA by a totalitarian regime that forces women into sexual servitude, should not make you have fits of laughter.

One more thing. Why is the gilead/Canadian border so porous? You would imagine gilead to secure the borders in a North Korean fashion but instead June and her "mob" can cross over and beat a gilead commander to death. Ironically I can't wait for season 5. The absurdity will be comedy gold as I envisage June going on the run and becoming a Punisher stlye vigilante exacting revenge on gilead, or a Rambo figure who will single handedly defeat the gilead army.

My last season
betanslivka2 August 2021
I will not even bother to list all the plot holes and stupidity contained in this episode, since the were so eloquently stated by all the other negative reviewers. I can only say that I am glad I watched this through a free trial subscription to Hulu, because I would be kicking myself if I had paid for anything but the first season. Unless I find something else that I want to extend my subscription to watch, I will not be bothering with season 5. This series was a lesson in how to start with a solid portrayal of a great book and develop it into a load of crap.

Excellent, but something is missing.
1523118 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit there was an emotional "yes" I gave to Waterford's fate, but I so wanted to see him handled as a traitor by Gilead, and given the irony of meeting its justice system he had created. To me, that would have been a far more satisfying conclusion: to have him chased down and beaten by the women he victimized, then awaken in a jail cell to be tried and convicted before being put on the wall. Seeing him broken would have been wonderful.

Plotholes
mirjambouman1218 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Really how do so many people not understand that Gilead does not care about Fred at all? It's made very clear, they literally only can spare thoughts and prayers. So if he defects and starts talking, the only thing they are interested in is damage control. Not saving him! The eyes are supposed to dispose of him. Like a fair trial is actually important toGilead, come on after 4 seasons you should know better. Episode was awesome.
