‘Ricky Stanicky’ (2024): A Review

Zac Efron, John Cena, and Andrew Santino star in "Ricky Stanicky," which is available on Amazon Prime Video.

John Cena: The New Breakout Star of Comedy

The overall plot of Ricky Stanicky involves a group of friends who make up a fake best friend who constantly calls them away. The catch is that there is no best friend named Ricky Stanicky, and when their partners and families begin to ask questions, it’s time for them to invent one. The film is directed by Peter Farrelly and distributed by Amazon MGM Studios.

Fake Friends to Real Bros

Ricky Stanicky is a film that sees a group of friends who love to go on wild trips and leave their families. A big twist, however, is they blame all their trips on a friend named Ricky Stanicky. In the real world, Ricky Stanicky does not exist, but when their families and partners begin to ask too many questions, the group of friends go and make Ricky Stanicky up. The concept of the film is not anything new, but the film goes above and beyond when it comes to reinventing storylines and making them a bit funnier. The film, which is roughly two hours long, goes on a journey of self-discovery for all the characters involved.

The film is funny, and its “R” rating lets it go wherever it wants to and does not hold back punches when it comes to jokes or more serious matters. There’s a couple who are working through having their first child, another who has issues opening up to each other (mostly Zac Efron’s character to his onscreen partner), and another couple who are on the rocks because one wants to be a writer while the other works to help pay for everything. The depth that the film allows the characters to have is amazing and helps the viewer get attached to each character quickly, especially Ricky Stanicky, who is played by the incredible John Cena. When it comes to actors who know a thing or two about comedy, this film Is stacked with talent.

John Cena is a Comedy Star

John Cena is an absolute madman in the film. He shows just how good he is at improv and how far he is willing to go for a joke to land. It’s crazy how comfortable he is in this genre. Of course, Cena has done other projects that were in the realm of adult comedies, but this one seems to be at another level. Maybe it’s because, as of late, Cena has been working on mostly action-adventure-type films, so fans are not used to seeing this side of him. Out of all the WWE wrestlers who have turned into actors, Cena has got to be the best at comedies. The Rock does action like nobody else, and Dave Batista can do dramatic roles with ease, but Cena has got comedies.

Of course, there are other actors in this film who make Cena shine and put a spotlight on their own characters as well. Zac Efron plays Dean in this film and, like Cena, has many other adult comedies under his belt. Efron does a great job playing the emotionally distant boyfriend, but also slowly changes thanks to Cena’s character. Podcast host and famous comedian Andrew Santino plays JT in the movie and is the only one in the group of friends who has a child. Santino’s delivery of jokes and lines is so perfectly timed he never misses a beat. Finally, Jermaine Fowler plays Wes who is a struggling writer just trying to find his way in the world. He is the vulnerable character and funny guy that every friend group has. The chemistry between the main cast and the group of friends is unreal. They all gell naturally together and seem like genuine best friends on and off screen.

Not a Marvel or DC Film

The cinematography is okay in the movie. However, with this kind of film, it’s more about the jokes, funny situations, and how the main cast of characters get out of them. If fans are hoping for insane virtual effects, then they are in for a rude awakening. There is a scene in the film where bad CGI comes into play. It’s not pretty, but again, for this type of film, it’s not supposed to be. This is not a Marvel or DC film. So, the cinematography is good for this style of film. It allows the viewer to see and understand the inside jokes and see how the plot is moving along in a certain direction.

The aesthetic of the film is generic, but it’s the aesthetic of the individual characters that really shine. Ricky Stanicky is a huge character, literally and figuratively. Stanicky is either in a lavish suit or dirty rags. The difference in aesthetic for each character is something that is enjoyable to see because it helps the viewer identify who is who very easily. Sometimes, films don’t make it obvious who is who, and that can get confusing for viewers, especially if they are doing something while watching the film. Ricky Stanicky does not fall into this trap and dresses each main character drastically differently from the rest. Even the partners of the main characters match their aesthetic in some way so it can be easy to tell who is with whom.

Hail Ricky Stanicky

If viewers love a good adult comedy, then Ricky Stanicky is the 2024 film that needs to be seen. Even casual fans of John Cena should be on the lookout for this movie. It may not be a huge DC or Marvel film, but Ricky Stanicky will have viewers laughing and going on an emotional journey.
