During World War II, American journalist John Davis and his wife Nora lose their unborn baby in London during a German air raid. Traumatized Nora returns to America, where she seeks many distractions in sports and social activities. John stays behind in London and is assigned to write an article about orphans in the heart of London. When he visits a bunker for this, he befriends the young orphans Margaret White and Peter Humphreys, whom she considers her younger brother. John wants to try to adopt both and take them to safe America, but Nora and the Germans could cause trouble.
