“The Urn” by Frances Ogamba is compelling but lost me a little. I love Ogamba’s style of prose, though, so it was still an enjoyable read.
The second story, “Welcome, Karate” by Sara Saab, sucked me in. I could not stop reading it. It’s weird fiction set in a totally ordinary location, a gym. A septuagenarian fitness buff is the protagonist, which is different and fun, and the clues keep building up that something is out of kilter in her town. The ending is so cool and weird. The whole magazine is worth it just for this story.
“Lipopire” by Jack Klausner is written in contemporary casual lingo which Klausner nails. I totally bought into the reality of the protagonist’s situation (a woman on a diet). It’s an emotional horror story that feels so private, like a peek into the poor woman’s secret diary. Good story!
“I was a girl once but I slipped” by Rupsa Dey is part folk lore (Bangladesh, I think, but I’m not sure), and part coming of age. I didn’t “get” it on the first read, but the imagery is lovely and the plot is interesting. I wouldn’t mind giving this story a second look.
Excellent magazine!
